Editor’s note: On the eve of the publication of his new memoir, “Point to Point Navigation” (Doubleday), iconic author and historian Gore Vidal sat down to an exclusive video interview with Truthdig Editor Robert Scheer and offered this plea to America regarding the Nov. 7 elections:

“This is the most important vote that you’ll probably ever cast.  Because should this gang of thugs continue in the two houses of Congress, there isn’t any chance of getting the Constitution back….”

    We’re facing the most important election in my lifetime—which does not quite extend back to that of Abraham Lincoln, but it’s pretty close. There’ll be nothing more important in the voting line that one can foresee that will come our way while any of us is still hobbling around. This will determine whether we regain the republic which we have lost over the last five years.

    The coup d’etat was so rapid that even I, who am ready for such things ... I thought, these people are going to make a grab for it. But I thought, my heavens, there’s still the courts…. Even a shameless Supreme Court is not going to back up the loss of habeas corpus….

    So, my fellow countrymen, as I sit here, not yet at Gettysburg, I have a notion that this is the most important vote that you’ll probably ever cast.  Because should this gang of thugs continue in the two houses of Congress, there isn’t any chance of getting the Constitution back….

    This is the last chance, really, by getting some new chairpersons to head committees in the House ... to have a clean sweep, which, in normal times, if we’d ever enjoyed them, would have happened by now. Now it has got to happen, or welcome to the Third Reich.

    Yes, Piechick, you’re right and I was wrong. The voting DID seem to be fair. I was utterly paranoid that there would be massive fraud. That’s one of the reasons my wife and I left the country, fear that democracy was dead. (We still mailed our absentee ballots from Down Under.) I’m feeling something unaccustomed today—political optimism. There will be a lot of hard times to come. A country can’t get out of the financial hole overnight after Bushwit has dug it so deep over the past six years. And when Iraq collapses and pulls much of the Mideast into the pit with it, there’s going to be hell to pay. But perhaps there’s a chance. I have two more years on my work visa, but we might actually move back—after November 2008!

    To all those people who were saying our election was going to be stolen, and were trying to intimidate all of us into believing in some rediculous conspiracies, I wanted to come back and say this:  I was right

    This country has proven time and again there is a great and wonderful system at work here.  When things swing too far to one side, rest assured that the failsafes of our constitution will riegn them back in.  Yes, we must remain vigilant so that power will not be stolen right in front of our noses, but don’t you DARE patronize me and the rest of the visitors to this message board.

    We don’t need your conspiracy fear mongering to keep this country afloat.  Just a vigilant eye and the well balanced, SECULAR constitution we have!! Congrats Dems for a well deserved victory, and congrats Virginians for amazingly elecing Webb!  You pleasantly suprised me!

    re: MOST IMPORTANT VOTE

    As I have always said, since 2000, the Fashist state marches on.  I knew about the Conservative Republicans, I met them in Arizona,  All one had to do is look at their take over of Arizona and see what they had done there.

    High Crime, High drug Use, attempted ban on abortions, gay marriage etc.  You name it they did it and put Arizona at the bottom of all real quality of life indices.  (Number of books per 1000 pop to check out.) etc etc

    But Nobody did.

    And America fell under their spell for six disspiriting years.

    Now if the Dems House or otherwise can make attempts to to reverse the tax cuts, raise the min wage, help find a sane way out of the occupation, etc etc etc and be nice at the same time. 

    America will have a fighting chance at reviving the constitution and the bill of rights.

    Oh yes, and reversing the tide of ownership of radio TV and newspapers by gigantic corporations.  That should be number 4 on the list.

    And reforming the Student Loan program.

    etc etc etc

    And my best to Gore Vidal, loved his books since I was a kid, esp the American History series… best of which was Empire.

    E. Beardsley, 36899…Sir, I have been convinced for many years now that it is not by mistake, chance, TV, or incompetence, always the favorite of the pol, that our children come out of our school system much dumber than when they went in….i. e., they are immune to learning anything that is not celebrity, shopping, or sports. That required a plan. It is impossible to keep children from learning, but if you are able to plan far enough in advance, and if you have central control of what goes into the public schools, then it is easy to direct small children in any direction you want to, as long as you have the complicity of their parents. Federal control of the schools is almost absolute as is the thinking of the parents thru control of the media and the thought coming out of the universities for wide distribution. The intelligensia and Bill O´Reilly, what a combination! but it works.
    I have hoped that the Bush administration had made it crystal clear to anyone one point above an oyster just what the agenda of the conservatives is. It should be that two-by-four between the eyes needed to redirect our collective attention from whichever bedroom window or crotch we have been invited to peek at….but maybe not.
    I sincerely hope that this election marks a time of awakening in the USA. I like you and GV, am somewhat long in the tooth, and would like to see some improvement before I go.

    When I saw the news of the plane hitting the twin towers, my first comment was what the hell did we do to piss them off that much?  If we knew the unbiased answer to that question, perhaps we could move on….where ever that would take us???

    This election was a win for getting our democracy back on line.

    Murtha and Webb will drive the issue of Iraq in the Congress and Senate. It is up to the Peace and Justice movement to drive their talking points. The “Cut and Run” talk needs to be replaced it with facing the responsibilities of the Untited States and it’s Coalition of the Responsible to assist Iraq rebuild itself and start pulling it’s troops home.

    By our voices for change being joined by independents, democrats, and republicans, It is not enough for the Military to just change the course. There needs to be a total refersal of agenda and goals of their mission in world security. Impeachment of the entire war of terror as well as a new “Martial Plan” responce to Iraq and Katrina is needed to support the freedoms of all Humans.

    Closing the School of America and the training camps of torture created by the United States since Webb and Murtha served in the Military. “Draining the Swamp” of not only the Congress but our international economic efforts for corporate greed.

    It is required of us as Americans to inform those that represent our votes the mid term elections, what our votes mean. It is time to hold the Democrats and the Republicans responsible to address our grievences for that passed 6 years of the Bush - Cheney - Congress - Senate and International Corporate agendas.

    It is clear that the war was wrong on every count. Those that took us to war need to be held accountable. The media wants to tell us that we don’t have the stumach for Impeachment. That is the corporate interests talking. Not the people!

    I’ve been a fan of Gore Vidal for years—-way back to the days when he used to argue with William F. Buckley and I started to understand the difference between conservative and liberal.  (I was probably 12 or 13).  His brilliance has fascinated me as does his ascerbic wit so when I see the sadness in his eyes I feel that we truly have hit the bottom of dark abyss—and despite what others on this site think—-there is a decidely 3rd Reichian flavor to all of the events taking place with the GOP.  I too believe that there is no more important thing to do today but vote and finally throw the bums out!

    Because the Republicans happen to be in power does not, in my mind, exonerate the Democrats.  American working-class voters—and non-voters—have been outright cheated by arrogant, entitled congress people from both parties the last many years.  They forget they are elected to do the people’s work, which implies that things should be improving for working-class people in this country.  They lie, cheat, steal and fight to cover their own asses. Any worker with that kind of work ethic and record would get his/her ass fired.  No honest, sincere, principled person could be elected to join that circus and not be corrupted by it.  Our democracy needs an extreme make-over, starting with term limits (with apologies to the very few who should stay on) and with campaign reform, which will limit the extent to which the electorate will be bombarded by lies and muck.  The amount of money spent on campaigns is obscene, given the living conditions of many working class people in America.  It’s just another form of lobbying.  Furthermore, it makes it virtually impossible for any honest, bright, moral, middle-class citizen to have a chance to straighten this country out.  This is not a partisan issue.  They want it to be so, but it’s about working-class people taking back their government.

    I recall Gore Vidals statement some years ago upon Bushs 2000 selection - ‘he will leave office as the most despised president in American history’. I have always felt this was prophetic. We have had to wait 6 long and depressing years, but this is probably the beginning of the end for BushCo. The American public has slept with this dysfunctional crazymaker and they know his smell by now. If not, or if the voting machine fix is in again,  there will have to be economic or ecological collapse over the next 2 years.  Indeed it may be too late to avert that anyway. But with some actual intelligence and professionalism [Democratic leadership], in the House at least, the long road back to democracy and sanity can finally begin.

    The evidence is strong that MOSSAD, Israel’s Intelligence service masterminded the 9/11 attacks, using Muslims as ‘Patsies’, and placing a copy of the Koran along with a flight manual in a parked van.  The FBI admits that they have insufficient evidence to implicate Bin Laden, and also say that evidence linking Israel to the attacks is “Classified” meaning they do have evidence.  FBI has found little if any evidence of El Quaeda cells in the USA, but literally hundreds of MOSSAD people, in some cases with plans of unmarked federal buildings.  See vitaltruths.blogsource.com for specifics.

    Mr. Piecheck is apparently unfamiliar with the history of the third Reich.
    Election 2000 began what was to have been the thirty year planned take-over of our Democracy.
    Thank God for this mid-term election.
    The Constitution has narrowly escaped obliteration. Two weeks ago Habeas Corpus was suspended. Within one week, Duncan Hunter called for the Pentagon to remove reporters from Iraq.
    CNN refused to accede. Freedom of the press and free speech prevail.
    Barring success of the Fascists in thieving the
    vote today, our Democracy, PEACE, prosperity and progress will be restored.

    What America truly needs is another was within America itself.
    Bush is the devil and evil with his GOPerverts and crooks liars thieves murderers.
    Sometimes when you cant reason you must resort to violence to overthrow the criminal government including the neocons who are behind of lot of it living up to their names as satan children and Bush is satan.
    If they rig a 3rd election then America must fight back not with peace but with arms to overthrow these thugs tyrant and dictator. We must go to war to take our nation back from these criminals.
    Look what Bush has done in Iraq and the world. He is truly the evil devil satanic serpent with a brain fried from 30 yrs of cocaine and alcohol abuse. The silver spooon must be overthrown and all his ilk.

    The Republic ended long ago. The creation and gigantic build up of weapons of mass destructon, broke all ties between us and the continuing criminal enterprise, called the Government of the United States of America.

    We exist due only to the continuing efforts of some still unknown high level power.

    Our nuclear war fighting criminal elite know that they must launch an all out nuclear war to stop the liberation of humanity.

    Our nuclear war fighting elite decided in April of 1947 that we must all be destroyed in a nuclear war of genocide. We exist only due to the fact of the continuing intervention by the still unknown, “High level powers.”

    Mr. Vidal,
    I came home last night after work and while surfing the net came upon your interview on truthdig.
    I served as a medical corpsman in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive of 1968. So I saw the human face of war, divorced from the flowery slogans. It was not a pretty sight, as you know being a fellow war veteran.
    I was against the Iraq War from the very beginnning when Karl Rove hit the keyboard of his Mighty Wurlitzer in the Bush administration’s hysterical propaganda campaign for the war. In my wildest imagination I never thought an American president in the future would commit a foreign policy debacle that rivaled LBJ’s quagmire in Vietnam. And since my experience as a medical corspman was such a visceral and concrete one, I felt in the run-up to the war like I had entered an elevator, pushed the button for the 37th floor but after the elevator door closed I was suddenly plummeting down toward the basement.
    I wasn’t going to vote this morning. But I kept thinking about what you said in your interview, that if you don’t vote you might as well say hello to the Third Reich in this country. So instead I did vote, especially, to elect Sherrod Brown as the Democratic Senator to represent Ohio. I just hope Diebold doesn’t change my vote to Mike Dewine.
    We live in dark times. The torch that Lady Liberty holds in her hand on Ellis Island glows dimmer and dimmer with each passing night. And her flowing robes have been replaced with blood-stained combat fatigues. But I try and fight against the despair I feel as a war vetran that visits me in the night. I would petition the Lord with prayer, but I am a confirmed agnostic since my return from the war. Yet if the Democrats manage to regain the House of Representatives and/or the Senate, I know I will probably feel something akin to divine rapture.
    So you can take credit for my voting this morning. Despite my cynicism for the political process, I walked through the rain to the polling station. But I doubt if it really means anything in the larger scheme of things.
    The wounded grunts on the hospital ward used to joke when they were asked about finding that elusive light at the end of the tunnel over there with a rhetorical question: Would the last soldier leaving the country, please remember to turn off the lights?
    Perhaps in my voting today, I am trying to salvage something positive no matter how meager from my tour of duty and perhaps also honor those wounded grunts, many who merely went back to the war when their wounds were healed, to kill or be killed. In many manys I have never returned home from the Vietnam War. But thanks to the Boy Emperor and the Cheney/Rumsfeld junta, the Vietnam War has returned home to me. I just hope they remember to turn off the lights.

    Now, now, Mr. Vidal!  You know, that sort of plain-speaking went out of fashion with the two-party system in this country.

    Vice President Sidius and Junior’s Brain are pulling out all the stops today, because they know they will be able to get away with them as long as they seem to win or just declare victory.  Even if some staffer goes to jail, who gives a flying leap, right?  As long as Senator Macacawitz, and Senator Monty Burns, or Senator Talentless Wonder come back and prop up the Junta running this country, anything goes for this crowd.

    So I just wonder whether we will ever know who actually won today’s election in a number of races.  And I also would like to point out as the proverbial cherry on top of the Republican self-congratulatory cake is that so far I’ve not heard of a single case of a Republican vote being turned “magically” (or with special dispensation from Saint Walden di Diebolda) into a Democratic one, and yet the reverse story is so common…

    What does that say about this election, and the depravity of the current Republican Party?

    I am one of those Republicans in Idaho that is trying to get balance in our State and in our Nation.  There is no doubt too much power ALWAYS ends in corruption and arrogance! I am sick of the Christians being manipulated by the Right Wing that wave their rallying call to divert the issues that face Americans daily.  I will be making calls at for the Democratic seat in the U.S. Congress.  It is called “Republicans for Grant”. The candidate that is the “choice” for the Republicans is beyond disgusting.  He actually states and includes info in his propoganda that says “abortions are linked to breast cancer”.  This is just one of the many offensive acts. I pray and hope….this wave of arrogance and corruption will end…which is only possible if the voters get out and send a strong message!  Our Gov. race is a tight one as well….and this is Idaho so that is impressive!  Cheney has been here twice in the past weeks stumping to help keep this State in the Republican hands….I am hoping too many of us have wised up.  what was once about security for me…is now about shame.
    One voice in Idaho trying to make a difference!

    Are We Ready ?

    These last six years of criminal near psychopathic rule by the GOP began when the khaki pants button-downed Republi-Youth marched on the Floridians daring to perform a legally mandated recount. The slide to demeaning the constitution, habeas corpus and the Geneva Accords began that day.

    Frankly, as the Supreme Court began deliberations to mandate a Bush victory, I opined that America needed a few years of the thugs rule so that the Democrats and the populous could be reminded what they stood for. If the Democratic Party will not now stand for and the voters do not now demand responsible non-corporate-purchased legislation we all will have learned nothing and deserve the venal ineptitude that comes from oligarchic rule.

    again…gore vidal—one of the most under appreciated writers here in la-la land—has struck the nail of ignorance with his clever ball-pin hammer of words of truth concerning our now trashed republic. Now comes the real horror: who ever “wins” the presidential election in ‘08..(demo or republican)..will that future administration undue the knot that the criminal cabal of cheney inc. and boy bush has tied around our constitution??  stay tuned amerika. the national i.d. act kicks in around the later half of ‘07…the irak quicksand war knows no bounds nor end…meanwhile…here in la-la land…we americans stand by mute..and confused…unable to march in the streets because of the need to put bread and money on the table for survival…perhaps the middle america will wake up and smell the barn (constitution) burning…and take radical action in the streets…patriot act or no patriot act…thank you mr. vidal for all of the brillent writings of your career…especially your political essays…keep working mr. vidal…america still needs your raspy lion voice of dissent…

    I beg to differ with Mr. Vidal.
    This is most definitely NOT the most important election in anyone’s lifetime.
    That would have been the 2000 election.

    The abject complacency Americans clearly demonstrated by allowing the entire democratic process to be subverted by a single vote was not lost on the ruling elite and simply giving a different set of politcal pigs first crack at the special inteest trough isn’t going to change a thing

    Unfortunately, like many Americans Mr. Vidal sees the Democrats as our salvation and conveniently overlooks their total submissiveness over the past six years and quite often, their outright complicity with the current administration in the systematic destruction of our Constitution and the American middle class.

    If the Democrats win a majority in either congressional house today we will, in effect be rewarding them for letting the country down and selling us out. It’s incredibly foolish and naive to think that anything will substantially improve as result.

    Great going Vidal. You are a true patriot.

    There’s not a dimes worth of difference between both parties. In essence we have only one party. The Dems and Repubs are both controlled by corporations and International banking. We know that corporations lying in bed with politicians is called Fascism. Both so-called parties have sold us out to globalist agendas.

    The Bush administration is one of the most corrupt America has seen. Yes, there should be a clean sweep. However, putting the Democrats back in power will not resolve this horrible situation we’re in.

    We must vote for Constitutionalist and true Patriots even if this means supporting third parties. Of course we know that many will say that a third party candidate can’t win. In a sense that is true, but only if people refuse to unite for a common cause. Yes, third party candidates could win but the American public must wake up and get their heads out of the TV set along with sports and other entertainment. We must get involved with the political process.

    We the people have a lot of power. We just simply won’t use it. We are bombarded daily with subliminal media and government propaganda. Therefore many Americans have lost their ability to think independently and rationally.

    The power of advertising is one example. How many times have we viewed a cute or catchy commerical on TV, then when we go to a store to buy products we wonder why we bought a certain product we didn’t really want or need. Reason….cute and catchy commercials. Mind conditioning works. We must think outside the box and start reading independent news sources.

    Let’s not re-elect any incumbent. Maybe one or two exceptions like Ron Paul or Tom Tancredo. We have to flush the D.C. toilet until fresh clear water runs in the bowl or we are going to continue down the slippery slope of destruction as a Republic.

    I agree with the fact that we need a change in congress and all. But I am also a realist in the way that I realize that it is inevitable that we as a human race will eventually destroy ourselves. So all in all in the end if we win the house we’d only be delaying it. So in all it really doesnt matter what happens were all fucked anyhow. Drink yourselves silly CHEERS!! smile

    Dear Sir,

      For many, many years in my youth (early-teens and well beyond) I was a HUGE fan of William F. Buckley Jr.—you may have heard of him. I mean, I *idolized* the guy. As a teen I relished the famous verbal jousting—accessed in those days in its print form and subsequently on a video clip I’d gotten hold of—between my idol and yourself as it occurred on live television during the 1968 Democrat convention.

      Well, a funny thing happened: perhaps it was my idol Mr. Buckley’s horrendous, if presumaby facetious, call to make Israel the 51st state. Or perhaps it was the increasing realization that my idol was much too easily flattered—and, most importantly, *influenced* by his flatterers—to warrant the high esteem in whic I held him. Whatever.

      I do know, though, that as the years went by I found myself (disturbingly enough) agreeing with YOU—his well-known Nemesis #1 more than with him.

      At this point, sad to say, my infatuation with my former hero has waned considerably, while my appreciation for what I consider in significant respects to be your more authentic American patriotism (not that I even necessarily agree with you on most things) has increased.

      I agree with you: Bush is an horrific stain on America. He is a bona fide mass murderer, for one. He has ignored George washington’s prudent counsel to “avoid entangling alliances”; no, he has actively gone in the OPPOSITE direction. He has done extraordinary harm to my country.

      If only Mr. Buckley had the balls to tell the truth about his Yale classmate and fellow Skull & Bones alumnus George H.W. Bush’s psychopathic kid ...

    I am trying to remember at what point during the last 6 years the DP stood against any of the warmongering and the war. 

    I am also trying to remember at what point the DP stood up against the process of the shredding of the constition and the development of the fascist state.

    I am trying to understand why Rahm and the “neocons” at the DLC and the AIPAC financed DP will be any different than the neocons in the current administration.  Especially since they have repeatedly assured the MSM that they are not.

    I admire Mr. Gore and have read his opinions about Truman/Acheson and their destruction of the “republic” and the creation of the “national security state”.

    It’s hard for me to believe that Mr. Gore doesnt believe that the DP had a major hand in this administration’s creation of the “national surveillance state” and that they will do anything significantly different if returned to power.

    I hope I’m wrong about tomorrow’s voting, but I’ve got this gut feeling that these self serving smug bastards know how to steal an election and all the pagentry of thinking we’re voting for change won’t mean a damn thing when these voting machines do what their masters tell them to do. After watching Hacking Democracy on HBO, I’ve so lost faith in the direction of this country; you can almost see democracy slip away in such a short period of time since the neocons have risen to power. I voted in the pre-election about a week ago and as I pressed all the buttons for the Democrats, I still left the voting center feeling will it really even matter! I was so optimistic with the last election and sat stunned when George W. Bush got in again, that I’ve become numb to disappointment. I’m not a religious man, but I’m hoping for a miracle tomorrow and that the Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia machines become self aware and refuse to follow through with any vote tampering that goes on. As for the people. I hope it’s the biggest turnout in election history and that the poor and disenfranchised make an effort to make their voice heard. If not, as Gore Vidal said,  there won’t be a chance in getting our democracy back

    Chilling stuff. I respect Vidal because he has a keen sense about U.S. history.

    After seeing an interview with him on Aussie TV, I was inspired to read some of his books. (Had only seen articles and video of him previously.) I found “1876” in a used bookstore. Even though it was written in 1976—six presidential elections before the fraud the put Bush in office—it foretold perfectly the way that one was stolen. I’m glad I was not reading it in November 2000 because I would have freaked. God only knows how Vidal felt.

    So it worries me to hear him saying the same things that John Conyers and Greg Palast have said. I’m already worried enough that I emigrated from the U.S. If I had any faith that there might be fair elections there, my wife and I would have stayed. Now, as we sit on the eve of Election Day (already Tuesday afternoon here) I can only wonder whether these experts like Vidal were being too paranoid. I hope they (and I) are wrong but fear we’re right. We’ll know in 24 hours…

    Are we having an election or an illusion of an election? The last two were on par with a banana republic to say the least. But you have to vote, what else can you do?

    Why are there so many close races or do they just tell us they’re close? Everything Bush touches turns to poo, like a King Midas in reverse, and it’s still close? One debacle after another and people still can’t make up their minds?

    Are we even a nation or a collection of states? What’s wrong with us?

    I keep having to remind myself that the last time around, in 2004, I was feeling that Bush was going down for sure.  The long lines of Dems determined to vote, the exit polls favoring Kerry, the momentum of the Anybody But Bush attitude.  Then, a last minute surge in Republican support (read virtual votes) gave the race to Bush.

    Having followed the exploits of Bev Harris for the past two years, culminating in the recently aired “Hacking Democracy” on HBO ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8367786376074634512&q=hacking democracy&hl=en), it is plain to see that the only thing that keeps these criminals in power is massive electronic vote manipulation.  This admininstration and CONgress have acted as if the voters don’t matter because they don’t.  I hope to God I am wrong, but so much effot has gone into spreading secret accounting software all across the country, I think we are looking at one party rule from here until oil depletion damns us all.

    To those who might doubt the wisdom of Gore Vidal’s dire description of our national calamity, consider some of the primary tenets of a fascist society: fear as an organizing principle of politics, centralization of state authority, militarization of foreign policy and the language of domestic life, criminalizaton of dissent as unpatriotic, demonization of racial and sexual minorities, “sacralization” of civic discourse with terms like “homeland,” glorification of war, arbitrary imprisonment, use of torture, enforcement of strict gender roles and state intrusion on private reproductive issues, and interference with free elections, to name a few. Like a frog unconscious of water coming to a boil, most citizens do not know they have lived under fascsim until it comes to an end, if they survive it.

    These last six years of criminal near psychopathic rule by the GOP began when the khaki pants button-downed Republi-Youth marched on the Floridians daring to perform a legally mandated recount. The slide to demeaning the constitution, habeas corpus and the Geneva Accords began that day.

    It’s great that we’re writing about the monsters in our government—but what can we do to stop them? Here are three ideas:

    1. Cut their lifeline. Stop paying federal income tax (watch “Freedom to Fascism” on google video for free to see why the IRS is one of the most un-American organizations ever established)

    2. Practice your right to bear arms—and keep your guns somewhere secret and safe, so when the National Guard, like in the aftermath of Katrina, comes knocking on your door demanding your firearms, you’ll have at least some of them hidden. The second amendment was not conceived to protect gun collectors and hunters, but as an essential freedom—a means to protect oneself from domestic enemies, and in the most patriotic sense, an evil government.

    3. Find yourself a Republican to talk to about world history and the parrallels the U.S. shares with the powers of past. In order to defeat the New World Order, and re-install an honest democracy, we must first destroy this partisanship which only serves as a mechanism of Machevellianism.

    These ideas are simple. I challenge any One for dissent to come up with three more. Our minds are our most potent weapon. Now, more than ever, is the time to challenge our imagination.

    Here is what is at stake: Freedom

    I’m sorry but tears are spilling from my eyes.  Gore Vidal is so right about our nation that I’m in so much fear that I can hardly bear it.

    Heartless and soulless individuals are in control of our country and the people mean zilch to them but for our tax dollars which they use against us.  On November 1st. 2006, PeaceTeam reported that Bush had passed a bill through his cow-towing congress that allowed him an amendment to the Insurrection Act so that he could use the military and national guard against we, the people, in any demonstration against his policies that he considered out of line.  What, I ask, is to prevent him from planting his own people in a demonstration to ‘get out of line’ so that he could have as many slaughtered as he wished?

    Still, Americans seem comatose to the realities of what is facing our country if republicans maintain control of the house and congress.  Even with all the criminal evidence against the Bush administration, Americans remain in a trance.  To me and everyone I know, it’s inconceivable.  Is it that Americans simply do not care?  They couldn’t possibly be so busy that they know nothing of the dirty tricks played by this administration!

    If tomorrow doesn’t wake them up there shall be no awakening.  The enemies made by Bush, Inc. will, without a doubt, come to us with all the venom and hatred he has displayed against Iraq, but it won’t be Iraqis only.  Bush has proven to countries across the globe that he is a dangerous individual and one to be reckoned with.  America neither has the military or resources to protect us against almost the entire world.

    I am saddened and I am sickened but I shall hope and hope until the last vote is counted.

    Like Mr. Vidal I’m getting up in years. I’ve spent the bulk of my adult life teaching in colleges. What I’ve noticed over the years is that students, while no less intelligent than those of previous generations, they are increasingly more apathetic , increasingly less prepared with respect to their general knowledge, and certainly less well equipped with critical mental tools that might help them know bullshit when they see it.

    I used to think this evolving condition was more or less accidental, a product of our repeated and misguided attempts to tinker with education and educational philosophy. Jacques Barzun referred described it as the fragmenting of time, particularly in the lower grades, so that no student was ever at risk of becoming bored or jittery. The trend over several recent decades has been to make education “fun,” or at least marginally “entertaining” by presenting “fun facts” and using ever more whizbang gadgetry to make our presentations “visually” stimulating. The product of this, predictably enough, has been to produce a population of college students with attention spans of gnats.

    Lately, though, I’m beginning to see this may well have been a purposeful dumbing down of young people, driven at first by business interests and their political hacks, and then by cynical politicians and their industrial sponsors as an effective means of control.

    You need look only as far as one of those abominations they call, with straight face, a history text in any high school across the land. These collections of mythologies (hardly coherent enough to be called books), written by expert minimalists (an army of Winston Smiths), put no lasting thought in the heads of our young , but are intended instead to be sufficiently light on the mind so as to discourage any further consideration of the particulars or prompt the idea that it might be worthwhile to ask a question.

    Whether we are talking about evolution, climate change, stem cells, population and consumption, habeas corpus, or separation of church and state, the public mind is now fully captive, owned and operated my marketers of soap suds and political scoundrels. To awaken those minds at this juncture, I fear, will require a shock of enormous moment. And even then it may require several generations to repair the damage already done.

    I will vote in this election because, like Mr. Vidal, I think it may be our last chance to get it right. I vote in every election, of course, and always with the optimism that an awakening is at hand. Just maybe this is the one.

    Great warning from Gore Vidal.  I have another twist if Bush and Rove fix this election and win. It’s okay because if Americans can stand the corruption, lies, and back-stabbing of good candidates for just another 2 years, then the Rebublicans will feed upon themselves(they’ll cripple McCain and try to put in their own slugs and hacks) since the American people, both democrats and republicans will have had enough.  How? 
        The law of economics, the great leveler,  will crash down on the whole population.  The large city, state, and federal deficits, city and state bankruptcies, loss pension and medical benefits , off-shore loss of more American companies and businesses, and foreign competition will bring us to our knees as a wake up call. 
      As Ralph Nader said in 2001, Americans need an arse-whipping, and Bush is just the one to give it to them. Be patient since power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Perle, top generals, and some top GOP slugs are already turning against Der Fuhrer! A furious American anger is waiting in the wings!!!

    President Bush should be blamed for the mess in Iraq and Afghanistan, runaway spending and massive federal budget deficits, lower real wages and on the stagflation in the U.S. economy. President George Bush does not think that any of the rules should apply to him and acts like a scheming spoiled child who lies, cheats and steals to get what he wants. Torturing George lied to get us into Iraq and is lying to get us to stay the course, i.e., conditions in Iraq are much more dire than being reported by this administration, e.g., the Iraqi government is corrupt at all levels creating no security for Iraqis and an economy that has all but collapsed resulting in starving children. King George signs the newly passed Congressional laws but uses signing statements to subvert them and turn them to his advantage. Twofaced George uses faith-based initiatives to influence the wacko religious right’s votes to keep him in power but at the same time derides these nuts behind their backs. To stop this lunacy, vote Democratic.

    In the early sixties, Gore Vidal was running for Congress in an upstate district in NY.  My mother was heading one of his fundraising committees and this imposing intellectual giant came to our home for dinner.  As a snot-nosed know-it-all kid, i got the wake-up call of my life, realizing i must learn much more about our civilization.

    More than forty years later, i’m watching this election from my home in Germany, where i have gained some insight into the 3rd Reich and how the citizens here have become the most sustainable industrial economy in the world.  And i thank Truthdig for letting Vidal inject his searing perspective into the mass consciousness.

    It’s apparent from here that the coup d’etat is working, the body of evidence mounts daily as the horror of the mounting bodies in Iraq is hidden from view.  That this man can remain so erudite about the mounting horror of stolen democracy, as he exhorts us to finally fight back, is an honor to behold.

    There is little in western civilization which corresponds to the concept of “Elders” as in Native culture, but Gore Vidal is a shining example of an elder we should heed.

    Would that we all could find within us both a bit of the wisdom, and the courage that this man’s life represents.  GOTV, and if it’s stolen again, be prepared to take back america and stop this cabal.

    Yes, it’s true and thank you for saying it.  But in a country where the last two elections resulted in either an appointment of the wrong president or vote fraud winning the election, how can you be sure that even with leading margins in the range of 5% that we won’t see a 1% win by neocons?  In other words, this election will tell whether we are already have the Third Reich in power or not, not whether we will be welcoming them anew.

    And even if the good, honest people from any party get in office, what’s to guarantee they won’t be thrown out by faked results or the Gerbel’s propaganda machine by 2008?

    We are the only ones who can make a difference before there is all out war in this country, and I fear the only difference we will be given a choice to make will be by taking up arms against our own government.  I pray this does not happen.

    only persons who have lived through WW2 and the time that build up to it can really appreciate Vidals last words.He is absolutely right… I was there! We have to stop being naive and believe it can’t happen here. It IS happening here.We said the same in Germany:“Oh not here it can never happen here”. But it did.
    The only sad thing is that now it happens much faster and much more intense do to technical advances, voter desinterest and a press that forgot its duties.
    I immigrated to this country to never have to face such horrors again and at the end of my life I come full circle facing all that again that I had hoped to leave behind.Please do not let this happen!!!!!

    5.  The number and pervasiveness of campaign ads are directly proportional to how corrupt the sponsors of the ad are.

    6.  All campaign contributions in excess of $100 are a blatant attempt by the donors to corrupt.

    7.  Politicians who accept contributions from anyone in excess of $100 are corrupt.

    8.  The politicians who collect the most campaign contributions are the most corrupt.

    9.  Bills passed during an election year by the party in power are for the sole purpose of encouraging more campaign contribution corruption and the titles of bills passed will be carefully chosen to misrepresent the actual effect of the law being proposed.

    10.  Voters will once again prove ignorant of all the foregoing rules.

    Gore Vidal is dead-eye accurate in his assessment of the United States today, and what it is stumbling and bumbling towards in the very near future thanks to an apathetic citizenry, a ruthless White House and the compliant Congress.

    My grandparents escaped the Holocaust by fleeing Germany in the nick of time, and they passed on to their descendants – including me – a remarkable oral history of what life was like in the early years of Nazi Germany. Their experience was eerily similar what is happening today in America: No single coup d’gras but rather a creeping expansion of dictatorial powers brought about through staged “terrorist acts” (although the Nazi’s blamed the Jews, not Moslem extremists), an ideology blinded by self-righteousness and a belief that Hitler was ordained by God, an apathetic population.

    Even Jews who were friends of my ancestors belittled them for being frightened and fleeing to the US. Those same people ended up being gassed, worked and starved to death, or used for medical experiments by the Third Reich.

    Wake up! It is happening here and almost identical with the way in which the Third Reich came to be what is remembered today.

    Gore Vidal proclaims tomorrow’s election as the most important in his lifetime. http://www.TruthDig.com Other prominent liberals agree. They believe that return to a Democrat-controlled Congress is key toward moving us away from the disastrous policies promulgated by the George W. Bush Administration. I think they’re all missing the boat.


    Tomorrow the Democrats will make substantial gains. The House will fall slightly toward the Left; the Senate, in all likelihood, split 50/50 for the first time in a long while. Americans will heave a collective sigh of relief: “It’s the beginning of the end of the Bush reign”, they will muse. “And, best of all, the voting machines worked!” Of course they worked. They worked because Bush let them work, You see, truth is, a victory for the Democrats tomorrow fits perfectly into Bush’s plan.


    A victory for the Democrats allays the fears of millions vis-à-vis election fraud. In 2008, when the Bush Junta carries out the most far-reaching election fraud in the history of our nation, lots of people will point to 2006 and say “wow, the Republicans must’ve won this one fair and square.


    Have you heard of something called Presidential Signing Statements? Do you know that George Bush has, to a significant extent, nullified the power of our federal legislature by issuing statements regarding his ability, as the unitary executive, to view laws as “advisory” only in nature? Particularly during this time of war, George Bush views the power of the President as absolute.     Especially in the world of the internet, those who whine the loudest get heard.  Don’t always believe what is written here.  For those who are predicting this election is going to get hijacked, and to that fellow who said all the votes are going to be “52 to 48, Republican” earlier, I say calm down.  Tomorrow afternoon the Democrats will be popping the champagne bottles and celebrating our check to Bush’s power.

    The more you’re willing to look away from the fairy tale fantasy of what the United States is and research to find out what this administration’s really up to, the more you realize that Vidal’s warning is not at all far fetched.  Vidal convinced me to vote on Nov. 7th, which I had all but decided not to do because my choice for US Senator is between the son of the phony 9/11 Commission report and a democrat who voted to support Bush’s Military Commissions Act (which legalizes torture and allows US citizens to be jailed without a charge and without having to appear before a judge).  After seeing Vidal, I decided that voting for the democrat who thinks that appearing tough on terror will improve his chances of winning is better than possibly adding another republican who will rubber-stamp the bush et al preemptive attacks/militarize space/control the world agenda.

    Mr. Piechick, I have been reading Gore Vidal for 45 or more years and have never known him to be a fear monger. He, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, have been telling us about these eventualities for many years…..i.e. the plans for world domination made 60 years ago and renewed with PNAC, which is a more arrogant and in-your-face version. Or is over a million dead and a completely destroyed country not evidence of their willingness to do whatever they want no matter the cost….$400,000,000 tax dollars, yours and mine?
    The complete control of the population internally is nothing new. It has been, for the most part, done covertly with massive programs of disinformation, but always with force in the background. Read Howard Zinn´s ¨History of the American People¨.
    These people are more willing to use force overtly and set up to be able to use torture if they so choose….or are you one of those who believe we will only torture THEM? HK, who is the trusted advisor of your president ran OPERATION CONDOR all over South America, so he is very conversant with the control of pesky populations with terror and torture. And you might remember that, contrary to the hype about national security, militaries are always for control of the internal populations first, then for whatever adventurism the pols decide on. 
    If you need anything else to convince you to be really afraid of these people read the words of Gary North and some of the other religious zealots who have come to power as allies of the reps…best determine if the tail is wagging the dog because these are some seriously scary people who vowed to raise up a generation of children educated to use freedom of religion to gain power and finally be able to DENY FREEDOM OF RELIGION. They want a theocracy with law being the first 5 books of the old testament….with the death sentence for a list of transgressions as long as your arm…done by stoning, of course since stones are cheap and effective! There is even a faction that wants to bring back slavery! They did have slaves in the bible don´t you know.

    For those who think that this moment in our history is not following the path of Germany 1937, re-read the RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH, there are many hallmarks of fascism; the most telling is that the justice department becomes the arm of the rightwing, and the left gets prosecuted vigorously while justice is delayed on the right. First they come for the ‘enemy of the State’ the easily vilified, that have to be taken away with the relaxation of laws that protect our civil rights, then comes the spying and the secret prison system, how handy later on when the enemy becomes everyone who would halt their plans at full control. My prediction: They won’t let us get back in control of Congress, let’s write letters then.

    Unfortunately, if Chuck Hagel who owns a voting machine company can sweep North Omaha which is 99.99% non-white, the Democrats don’t have a chance.  They can thank Al Gore for not fighting these thugs in 2000.  All is lost.  Pack you trash and head for Canada before it’s too late.

    George Bush said the following: “I don’t believe it’s (the election) over until everybody votes.” Oh, it’s over alright. The fix is in. Surreal as it may seem, the United States has, in 6 painful years, gained the dubious distinction as the world’s foremost authority on sophisticated and well-laundered election fraud. The Bush mission of saving America from the evils of Islamo-Fascism will not be derailed by the democratic process. George Bush has essentially admitted as much.     In normal times, Thomas Piechick’s criticism of Gore Vidal comparing BushUSA to the Third Reich would be valid.

    But these are NOT normal times. Bush has suspended habeas corpus, just as dictators did across Europe in the late 1930s. His GOP minions are only concerned with winning and grabbing all they can for themselves.

    They can keep so-called “enemy combatants” in cages on a Cuban beach for as long as they want—without trial, without the right to an attorney, without the right to see the evidence to be used against them, and you say Gore Vidal is “fearmongering”.

    Wake up, buddy—we are facing a REAL nightmare of our own making.

    Georg Orwell warned us of this 56 years ago, and still the American public does not get it.

    It is said that absolute power corrupts absolutely. But what bis happening in America is that the absolutley corrupted are craving absolute power.

    Our Republic is designed to prevent any one group from exorcising absolute power. But thet system is being sytematically subverted so that the checks and balances are eliminated, along with meaningful political debate.

    Most Americans still have a kind of “it can’t happen here” attitude.

    Well it can. Once the right to privacy, fair representation in the courts (including the presumption of innocence), an independent press, and the voting process have all been subverted, the stage is set for authoritarianism.

    Citizens understandably don’t want to hear it, and the mainstream media doesn’t want to deliver that news.

    The reader above says we are not that far in trouble. I beg to differ sir. Wake up and start informing yourself. We are that far in trouble.

    What if your name ends up on the wrong list? Already the legal machinery is in place that may prevent you from ever being seen in public again.

    Oh, it can’t happen to you?

    Uh huh…sure…ask Maher Arar about that.

    Apathy provides the 50-50 split.  A few well-placed nudges provide the “plus 1”.

    I had a few books left over and thought “I’ll send them to the soldiers”.  I found a Web site with a list of titles they were requesting.  The great majority of the titles were “dark”.  I mean occult, or violent, or paranoid.

    Open a music magazine.  Every shade of black.  Regular hues are uncool.  Except perhaps red.

    Light, love, constructive behavior… All OUT. 

    There’s a million cop shows that consist of staring at rot.
    Sorry I digress. 

    Thank you Mr. Vidal for the warning.  However, I really don’t think enough people care.  It’s an orgy of self-destruction that’s taking place.  It’s going to be hard to divert!

    Remember what happened to Pierre Salinger when he championed the cause of the witnesse’s who cleary saw a missile hit the plane off the East Coast…Look up AEGIS missile on google…it is the missile offensive system of the US navy…it brought down an Iranian air liner in the 80’s (accidently)in the gulf…and there was a navy ship in the area when the american airliner blew up in flight…anyway my point is they always destroy the messenger…but let us all be martyrs for the truth and progressive change.  Let them destroy us, it is a good and noble cause…Vote and see what happens…will it be another 2000, will it be another 2004, or will it be a new fraud in 2006? 80% of people are casting their ballots on E-voting machines this year…hmmm i wonder if there is going to be a problem…oh we will fix it next time…why do they keep saying that?  Its to discourage the electorate so by the time they do fix the voting problem everyone will have already given up faith in the system…

    I sincerely hope the Democrats make big gains this Tuesday, and that we can restore some of the balance that has been totally lost.  But for Vidal to say that we will become “the Third Reich” unless we do gain some power really turned me off.  What the hell is he talking about?  Yes, this country is in one of the worst states it has been in a long time, but the Third Riech? Come on!  Vidal is ON PAR with Bush here with his fear mongering.  Bush fears us into thinking we are facing Islamo-facists, and Vidal fears us into thinking we are facing Republi-facists!  I really felt patronized after watching this.  We are in trouble in this country, but not that far in trouble.  Stop the lunacy of labeling everying you don’t like a conspiracy and focus on winning this election.  I don’t want a Fox News of the left, Sheer

In reference to the stealing of our elections, and in light of the numerous “limited hangouts” now pouring through the media, why not get in the vanguard of it all and just say it? 9/11Truth is the only issue strong enough to bring down these neocon, fascist, Strange Love, madmen before they start WWIII! I have little doubt you believe it. Since as you say you are a “conspiracy analyst,” and if you’ve found the time to read Webster Tarpley’s “9/11 Synthetic Terror - Made in USA,” why not? Once the nukes start flying, so what if they accuse you of joining the “tin foil / grassy knoll” crowd? What’s the alternative, cocktails in Biaritz with the oligarchs? We’ll all be radioactive anyway.
