Stephen Colbert put McCain and friends to shame on Monday by exposing the Republican senator’s torture protest as pseudo-opposition and their compromise with the Bush administration as an abject cave-in. I never miss Stewert, Colbert and Olbermann!!! They are all fantastic!! The sad thing is that the people who really NEED to watch them, the sneaky republicans, don’t!! They’d rather believe their lies! And McCain has turned into another slime ball!

those of us who see the slide into a dictatorship.

Nice work Mr. Colbert. As one of the many Irish looking across the ocean with increasing despair as Bush and his band of fundamentalist thugs rip your great country apart , its good to know that there are voices of dissent still shouting loud. Who castrated the Democrats? What a spineless bunch they are. Thank God for Colbert, Leno, Stewart and others. Imagine what Bill Hicks would have to say . Keep telling it like it is…..

OK, so Colbert is funny, but his premise here makes no sence. In his first sentence, he refers to Bush “changing The Geneva Convention”. This whole topic has NOTHING to do with the Geneva Convention. It simply doesn’t apply.
Report thisThe conventions apply to UNIFORMED combattants, VISABLY ARMED, who are signatories to the conventions. None of those apply to terrorists. If one wants to take the stnad that we are better than them and will treat prisoners humanely, that makes sense, but the GC’s just don’t apply!

It looks like there is plenty of support for Stewart and Colbert. How about another spin off or two. Real info, real colaboration, real democracy, one can’t help but smile.
We’ve been allowing torture for too long: Fox News -the rape-room of journalism, the Religious right -where Jesus means business.

McCain, or McCave (I like that) has been a Senator for too long. I believe it addles the brain; ditto for Lieberman. You have to make so many compromises, you have to appease so many diverse contributors, that after a while you gravitate to the easy course of hoping you don’t offend anyone by not really taking a position on anything. Oh, you may appear to do so; but not really. So let’s get rid of them now. So go out and vote for a Democrat, no matter how weak, get your friends to vote Democratically, and act to help others do the same. The long term Democratic Senators will have addled brains before long, but at least for the short term they will represent something newer and cleaner in Washington.

Its Not just the states…..we’ve also lost Habeus Corpus in the UK. We are under virtual 24 hour surveillance and they are trialling camera’s that can order citizen compliance from loud speakers in the North East of England. People - law abiding people - are being arrested near ‘sensitive’ areas and the rights of spontanious protest are being curtailed.

How about “righteous”? The Right versus the Righteous sounds about right to me.

Try as hard and be totally ‘right on!’ that
gopHER bunch and friends cannot be “shamed”.
None of them. They live and breathe “shame”, for them it is a way of life, and they don’t miss a step in doing what they can to do the shameful and never avoid a opportunity.
The McCain trio did a magnificent job of putting on a show of pretending to oppose ‘torture’, get some headlines then flip flop back into the bush house of shame and never skip a beat. The show they put on is called ‘a tease’. The pupose of the show was to induce the demos to sit back and let the trio look like honorable folk who would be effective. The demos got had again—Big Time!
The ‘Pugs are the Defecit party, the Lie party, the Death party, now are the Torture party. Shame!

Good work Dave. I myself am a bleeding heart liberal and own it whenever i find myself engagaged in political discourse.
Report thisit is my opinion that the republicans have made the word liberal synonomous with fiscal waste and therefore unpalatable to the majority of americans.
what strange times we live in when “liberals” stand for moderation in spending as well as conservation of our natural resources and “conservatives” wish to exploit public lands and run huge deficits.
Orwellian no?

no, it’s not about heroism now, or who stands up to whom, or says what to what, etc. the better half of america’s schizophrenic spirit has taken a knee, the count is at 8, and our demonic side is in a frenzy. the point of mccain cashing in his soul (recall that he has been built into THE credible voice on torture due to his “experience” as a POW)was that we, like him, would be forced to eat the apple along with the unspeakably horrible democrats who seem poised to bless the torture deal. or, better still, that those of us who refuse the apple on principle may only do so by rejecting the ballot box now and well into the future. how blind we all remain to the stakes, to their significance, and to the abject lateness of the hour. it would be nice if folks could at least see the play. funny, we seem to line up no differently for the slaughter than the cows we increasingly resemble. sad, actually. whatever the case, if the democrats permit the torture bill to become the law of the land, they shall not have my ratification vis a vis the voting booth this november or in novembers next. this will be a sad break with my family’s voting tradition, and my own specifically. but i will not ratify the nation’s decision to destroy its soul by casting a vote in that filthy box for democratic appeasers, republican sadists, or the investors who own the booths themselves. good luck to all of you who see this differently.

John—
What do you have against the term ‘liberal’?
If you don’t care for it, you might categorize those who oppose the Bush Administration as ‘sane’, ‘rational’, or ‘reasonable’ people.

Pathetic, where are the voices of opposition within the “main stream media”?
Why is it that real commentary is coming from as Jon Stewart stated on crossfire a show that is preceeded by puppets who make crank calls?
The real joke is that you can be much more informed by watching the comedy network for an hour than if you were to watch CNN, Fox and MSNBC all day (less Olberman).
Pathetic.

What is happening to this country?
They are certainly making sure that Georgie Boy won’t be punished for his criminal activities!
Used to respect John McCain - hah! Now he is just a Bushie puppet doing his bidding only so he can get in to the White House in ‘08.
Tyrannical rule - SAD - really SAD!

Colbert can be so poignant… it’s impressive.
I remember very little from my Government class in high school (it was one semester, shows how important it is), but I remember my teacher emphasized the Magna Carta, how it changed the world and how important it is. Now America has passed legislation overriding it. I hope some day that someone files a lawsuit against being detained without probable cause and gets the law ruled unconstitutional.
I also remember that teacher saying one day in class that no matter how much you like or dislike the president, you never want him to have too much power.
