Colbert Lampoons Bushs Torture AgendaPosted on Sep 19, 2006
On Monday, Stephen Colbert went after Bushs proposed re-imagining of the Geneva Convention by inviting the president to come on the Report and demonstrate his preferred interrogation techniques. Mocking the presidents assertion that the treaty banning torture lacks clarity, Colbert observed: I personally think the image of the president saying specifically what, to him, is not an outrage on human dignity will make everyone see his position very clearly…. Chris,
Report thisI can only assume you’re someone who loves to stir the pot and get everybody going. I can also assume you are “projecting” (my guess is you aren’t familiar with this concept…it’s when a person unconsciously transfers his/her own deep beliefs to another individual or group). We in Birmingham (yes, I know, the black heart of bigotry in your book) had to deal with our racist actions and beliefs, and we did and are doing it. It may surprise you to know that we have had a black mayor for over twenty years, and the majority of our city counselmen are black. People who move here from other parts of the country consider Birmingham “a well kept secret”. So you just hang in there with your own out dated notions, and stay away from Alabama.

I for one am really looking forward to their trials. War crime trials are televised right? or would there be a military tribunal where no one ever knows the results. Ratings could top O.J’s
Report thisGeorge will have a hard time lying his way out of a life in prison, let alone an eternity in hell. He better get his speach writers working on that one real soon.

This country will never move forward until will acknowledge some truths. We cannot deny that the South (that HUGE voting block that keeps the President and Conservatives in office year after year) IS in fact deeply bigoted.
The South DOES beat homosexuals to death with baseball bats.
The South DOES shoot abotion providers with high powered rifles while claiming “Jesus made me do it!”
The South DOES routinly assualt black men and is the base of operations for the Aryan Nation and the Klu Klux Klan.
So when we wonder why half the country LOVES Bush when he talks about torturing brown Arabsa who are Muslim (and not Christian) it really goes back to the basic fact that the South is deeply, deeply hateful and racist.

Bush seeks an ex post facto law that will make legal after the fact his violations of the Geneva Convention having to do with torture.
“No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.”
US Constitution, Article I
=================
Bush is beyond help from a mere act of Congress at this point. It’ll take either the second coming or a constitutional amendment to change any US treaty obligation; the chances of that happening are very, very slim.
“This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.”
US Constitution, Article VI, Annotations
Therefore, the Geneva Convention is the supreme law of the land and Bush is subject to it even if Congress should pass a measure that attempts to pardon him or, in any other way, absolve him of the capital crimes that he has already committed.

Brent,
I also take objection to Chris’s comments, but for a different reason. Chris tried to portray Southerners as ignorant due to their practice of using sweeping generalizations (also known as stereotypes) as the basis for making decisions. Sadly he did so by making a sweeping generalization of the south. Being hypocritical is not the best way to make a point. The emotional overtones of your response indicate to me that you are in fact from the South. Therefore, I can’t help but laugh at the fact that your rebuttal to his assertion that Southerners are ignorant was full of spelling and grammatical errors. This is an even worse way to make a point.

It’s not just satire. The Presidents body language speaks for itself. He’s become much more animated, like he’s trying to fight his way out of a plastic bag. Good thing he’s not armed.
the man unbecoming the myth
who turns out to be just another self righteous crusader on a mission, empowering petty tyrants and power junkies everywhere to rise up and raise a little hell for the cause.
meanwhile on Earth good and kind people are gazing at their sleeping children, softly weeping.

And people wonder why dems are labeled elitists. Being born below the Mason-Dixon line causes you to be pro toture?
Report thisReally? I’m sure Colbert, being from South Carolina, will be delighted to know this.

Chris, creating retarded, inbred, racist strawmen out southerners will always win the Yankee vote, I suppose.
And people wonder why dems are labeled elitists. Being born below the Mason-Dixon line causes you to be pro toture? You are an idiot and you argument is laughable. Go fuck yourself.

If it’s the president who wants clarity, then you need to put quote marks around the word clarity. “Clarity” is administration-speak for “my way”.

Very good.
Torture doesn’t work. True, the Red Southern states LOVE the idea of burning dirty brown Arabs with cigars, but they also LOVE the idea of doing that to African Americans and homosexuals. And Jews. And non-Christians. And feminists. And, well, basically anyone that isn’t a white, christian evangical Southern. Yes, sadistically torturing non-whites will ALWAYS win the Southern vote. But the truth is that, as pleasurable as it is to see a non-white scream in pain, it NEVER produces any actionable intelligence. 99% of these guys are either so low level that they have no idea who is doing what or they are actually innocent and got swept up by the military “just in case.” Can’t take chance with those nigg, er, I mean those Arabs.
