Limbaugh: ‘The Government Is Killing the Poor…With Too Much Food.’

Rush Limbaugh
Media Matters

Rush Limbaugh, pioneer of inane babble, has accused the left, the government and the United Nations of exacerbating the obesity epidemic in America by attempting to feed the hungry.  Limbaugh, in a trail of thought Magellan couldn’t have navigated, used as his inspiration a recent study which noted the prevalence of obesity-related health problems in poor communities.

Audio & Transcript

Partial transcript (from Media Matters):

LIMBAUGH: I think you might then say that the obesity crisis could be the fault of government, liberal government. Food stamps, all those—you know, I’m gonna tell you people a story. I—just, well, the government, you could say, is killing these people because we know obesity kills, and the government’s killing the poor. The Bush administration is killing the poor with too much food.

[...]

LIMBAUGH: And so, now, we find out that there is obesity and all this amongst the poor more than amongst those who are not poor. It’s sort of a textbook case of what happens when we let liberals have their way. I mean, for decades, all over the world, we’ve been beat about the head that there are hungry people out there, that they are starving. UNICEF—how many of you trick-or-treated for UNICEF? Did you “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF,” Brian? We all did—did you? We all trick-or-treated. One of the biggest scams on the face of the earth. It was—the scam was to get everybody loving the United Nations. The scam was to get everybody thinking the United Nations is feeding poor people. Remember all these stories: “A dime a day will feed 20 kids in some outward place around the world”?

The Govt. is killing the poor with too much food! You must mean tatter tots, canned beans, white bread and meat that resembles the bottom of an old boot. We know who subsidizes your food in exclusive Palm Beach. Lunch meetings with your staff of attorneys (keeping them busy these days)with lots of generous tax write-offs for “business,” and the minions, slaves and brown-skinned people who load your plate up at Dinner at exclusive restaurants on “The Avenue.” You are dripping with testicular fortitude! All because you have lots of cash and a swelling portfolio.  Your dieting days are replete with hundreds/thousands of “pain” pills and speed. Mind your own business and leave the struggling world to work 3 jobs with NO doctor’s visits or scripts for their miserable pain & empty stomachs. Besides, all your photographs (front-page newspapers mostly) show a fleshy, overfed radio screamer.  P.S.:  Why not donate $1.5 Million to a charity? Do something decent before the rug is pulled out and you go the way of the steamship.

Why play into Limbaugh’s porky paws (hooves?) by getting pissed off at him? Like Ann Coulter, Limbaugh is a one-note (bad) entertainer and Rove-programmed shill who couldn’t recognize a serious idea if it came up and bit him on his double-wide ass.

He isn’t offering an “argument” here that merits a serious rebuttal; he’s offering the usual Limbaugh shtick, which consists of faithfully parroting Bushite squawking points for a dim-bulb dittohead audience that gobbles up every word from whale-gut Pillhead’s mouth as if it were one of those supersized Mickey D meals he himself must consume at least six times a day.

Gotta admit it’s ironic listening to someone lecturing the poor on their obesity problem when for the last 20 years the lecturer himself probably hasn’t been able to see his own dick when he pees.

I’ve lived in the ‘ghetto’ of a couple of cities.  Oak Street Market was the only thing in true walking distance.  They didn’t carry a single item that is not pre-packaged and processed.  You couldn’t fresh food in the neighborhood.

I wasn’t as bad off as many in my area.  However, I noticed a trend amongst those far more poor than I.  When a poor person happens to have a few dollars in his or her pocket, what’s the available option to treat oneself or the kids?  The fast food value menu.  Five dollars could score double cheeseburgers for a family of four.

There is something to be said regarding Rush being “not literal” or perhaps “joking.” But not exactly that. He and his kind simply make this stuff up to get their audiences riled.

They exagerate and pontificate, stretch the truth, take things out of context, rarely fact-check, back each other up, etc., etc.

The problem is, Nat, is that many people do take them seriously. The clowns on FOX are just like him. Coulter is like him. And they are all part of the GOP. How many times do you see those imbeciles on FOX interview Bush and Cheney? Why does that happen?

Rush is part of the GOP and friend of Bush.

“Rush is a great American,” the president said of the beleaguered host, who has championed the conservative movement for decades. “I am confident he can overcome any obstacles he faces right now.”

Rush speaks before Conservative functions and Republican Conventions all the time.

That is what is so sad and so scary. If Rush is so obviously stupid, what does that say about those who think he is a “great American?”

A long time ago, I was briefly on welfare. The government never gave me food….I got food stamps to be used at any grocery store.

It’s really hard to buy enough food on food stamps. I found I was eating more pasta and bread because it’s filling for very little money. Rice and sausage casserole was a regular dinner choice. Fresh produce and quality protein is relatively expensive. That’s why poor people are fat. They can’t afford quality food!

Food stamps provide so little to feed a family that they have to be stretched (you all ought to try it for a month as I have done). Toward the end of the month come the lines at the food shelves where Kraft unloads tons of their Dinners. Lots of macaroni and potatoes are the dietary staples, filling the belly with empty calories. No fruits or veggies or high quality protein. THAT is what makes poor mothers fat.

I would add that as a nation, we learn to stop promoting the disordered to celebrity and require that our politicians seek independent therapy before seeking office.

The Food Industry is making the poor fat. Subsidized industrial farming practices, the misleading food pyramid, corporate greed that does not consider nutrition or health, the advent of the automobile and our dependency on it (vs. bicycles or sidewalks) , the lessening of support for school physical education and sports programs, constant advertising of fast junk food all play a part in the obesity epidemic.

Hasn’t obesity risen parallel with poverty since 2000? Throwing poor people off of welfare into the sub-living-wage meatgrinder has spurred the problems on. High quality nutrition costs money, takes multiple ingredients and requires time-consuming preparation that poor people, particularly those scrambling through multiple low-wage, part time jobs, don’t have.
SteveH talks of Commodity Foods, one of Mom’s rules for shopping is to stay to the edges of the Supermarket, that’s where the real food is, Produce, Meat, Bakery…The stuff in the center aisles is all high markup, high sugar crap with expiration dates years from now (‘cause it doesn’t spoil)
BTW, UNICEF does feed people, a hell of a lot more people than Rush. And it does make some of us feel good about the UN.

I’d like to counter with…

The Government Is Killing The Rich….With Too Many Tax Cuts!

Hear me out…all these tax cuts are giving the rich more money to go out and conduct themselves in ways that are excessive and even sometimes hedonistic.

Giving the wealthy too much monetarial resources can lead in some cases in self-destructive behavior. An example of this would be drug addiction to, let’s say, cocaine or heroin or OXYCONTIN, which, if overdone, will lead to premature death.

That argument might actually have more merit than Limbaugh’s, though my intent was to be silly. Unfortunately, he’s being serious.

Limbaugh is an idiot, but he has a point in a way.  Food stamps should be restricted use so they can’t be used to purchase junk food. They should only be good be for fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, cheese, bread, and other nutritional essentials growing kids need and nothing else.

No cookies, candy, ice cream, soda, donuts, etc should be permitted using government assistance.  I’ll bet this actually would go a long way towards curbing obesity in the poor.

Of course, Limbaugh isn’t poor or on food stamps, so what’s his excuse for being fat?

His is an INSANE argument, aggreed with only by ignorant people.

How about asking yourself what would a diet low on fat and high on sugar do to a populous?

“Fat” content does not make people overweight, finally disproved.

What makes people overwieght is a tasteless, high sugar diet, that keeps people feeling hungry no matter how much of it they eat.

I’ll be called a conspiracy nut for this, but our food has been DESIGNED this way! Read the labels!

The highest ingredient concentration in all foods in cans, bottle, boxes and bags is SUGAR. Call it cane juice, corn syrup, high fructise corn syrup, dextrose, maltodextrose and a hundred other names, SUGAR—highly addictive—is in everything from bread to soup to stew to pasta sauce to cereal to canned and frozen vegetables.

You are what you eat. Read the labels!

The obesity epidemic is not just to do with food, it is to do with our sedentary lifestyle. Schools are shrinking their reccesses and their P.E. classes. Kids watch more TV and computer games and parents prefer that because they feel better about keeping their kids safe at home. And that’s because, in part, they (the parents) are watching too much television network news and are paranoid about all the predators that are looming right outside their front door.

Switch off your TV’s and do something less boring instead.

Does Rush blame the “liberal” government for the fact that he is fat, er obese?

Rush, aka the floating fat man, may be right. Remember, according to Franken, Rusty spent some time on “welfare” himself - food stamps for potato chips. The man is a pig.

Amazing that you can sell Ignorance by the trainload, apparently.

It happens that I live on an indian reservation,  where I do grocery shopping.  I also travel a couple of hundred miles to a big city to do some shopping as well.

It is conservative business people who make a pragmatic decision to create large stocks of very low cost food items, called “commodity foods” to describe their real pupose - not as food, but as profit.  Some of this is from surplus stocks.

So you see whole walls displaying Spam and other supercheap foods that in big city grocery stores you see very little of.

When people can’t afford “whole foods” or organic food choices, they look for price.  A can of Spam for $2.00 becomes practical, if terrible from a dietary standpoint.  This is why there is an epidemic of both obesity and diabetes among the poor.

It is extremely cynical of people like Limbaugh to stereotype poverty for use as a bogus political issue, and not helpful.  This is a tough dilemma derived mainly from market economics and can’t be addressed by simplistic ideologues.

This low life has pumped rasism ,sexism, poison ,hate and discontent into the airways thru 500 stations for decades.
Yet he never gets the credit he deserves.

This man is dillusional!
“It’s sort of a textbook case of what happens when we let liberals have their way.”..
Then…
“The Bush administration is killing the poor with too much food.”
Is he trying to argue that Bush is too liberal?
He should go have another prozac.
