Seymour Hersh
From AMERICAblog

New Yorker reporter Seymour Hersh, right.

Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh defends his claim that the Bush White House effectively signed off on Israel’s planned offensive against Hezbollah earlier this summer—as a preparatory step for a potential attack on Iran. Hersh: “It’s ... time to decide whether we’re a democracy or not. This president is doing an awful lot of foreign policy without sharing it with the rest of us.”

AMERICAblog:

In a new article in the New Yorker, Seymour Hersh, of Abu Ghraib fame, claims that the Bush administration gave Israel the green light to attack Lebanon earlier in the summer:

A Pentagon consultant said that the Bush White House “has been agitating for some time to find a reason for a preemptive blow against Hezbollah.” He added, “It was our intent to have Hezbollah diminished, and now we have someone else doing it.” (As this article went to press, the United Nations Security Council passed a ceasefire resolution, although it was unclear if it would change the situation on the ground.)

... Earlier this summer, before the Hezbolla kidnappings, the U.S. government consultant said, several Israeli officials visited Washington separately, “to get a green light for the bombing operation and to find out how much the United States would bear.” The consultant added, “Israel began with Cheney. It wanted to be sure that it had his support and the support of his office and the Middle East desk of the National Security Council.” After that, “persuading Bush was never a problem, and Condi Rice was on board,” the consultant said.

Bunker buster at one time meant dirty. Did Cheney
have the city of Lebanon bombed with radioactive weapons? Is the city now radioactive? Would this be a war crime?

Going against the cries of billions of people in the world, Bush said NO to a cease fire, and of course we had Condi Rice regreting the loss of innocent lives in Lebanon, when she knew that exactly at that very moment, huge quantities of laser guided bunker busters were bring fedexd to Israel, to wreak even more death and destruction.
I just don’t know how people who are so evil can sleep soundly at night.

Just remember, Bush is on record for being against the “killing of innocent human life.” That is what he said just before Israel started bombing Beirut when he vetoed federally funded stem cell research. Better, according to George, to toss the tens of thousands of unused blastocysts into the garbage. Then, in an apparent contradiction, he and Condi put the brakes on the cease-fire movement saying, with endless repetition, that we must avoid the “status quo ante.” I am sure all those dead Lebanese will appreciate the distinction. In Bushworld, life is precious until it is born.

Re Comment #18365 by C Quil: Yes, every war should have a test phase. For WWII they called it Guernica.

Just testing out those bunker-busters on the Hizbollah to see if they’ll work in Iran. Every war should have a test-phase, right?

Too bad all those Lebanese civilians got in the way and were crushed, burned and sent fleeing. But hey - collateral damage should cover the needless brutal slaughter.

If this is what it takes for a civilization to survive, maybe you have to wonder about the civilization.
