Hagel Warns of ‘Hopeless, Winless Situation’ in Iraq

Sen. Chuck Hagel on 'Face the Nation'

Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel chastised the Bush administration on “Face the Nation,” saying Iraq was headed toward civil war and neither the American people nor Congress would tolerate the continued presence of U.S. troops there.

“It is very wrong ... to put American troops in a hopeless, winless situation, just keep feeding them in to-to what’s going on. That’s irresponsible and that is wrong.”

(h/t: Thinkprogress)

Partial Transcript (from Thinkprogress):

HAGEL:

There’s no good options here, no good options. I-I would move toward a higher ground toward right back to what you talked about, Bob, the regionalization. I would-I would get the first President Bush, President Clinton involved and try to impanel a-a regional security conference, a regional diplomatic conference. The UN can be part of that. Unless you come at it that way, we’re going to be leaving Iraq, and it is not going to be the way we intended to leave Iraq. Because that-that is the direction of where this is going. It is very wrong, Bob, to put American troops in a hopeless, winless situation, just keep feeding them in to-to what’s going on. That’s irresponsible and that is wrong.

SCHIEFFER:

But if, if the United States leaves, won’t you somehow have a confederation of Iran and the government there with the Shiites that are in-in-in southern Iraq?

Sen. HAGEL:

Bob, like I said, there…there-Bob, Bob, there are no good options here. That-that may well happen, I don’t know. But let me ask you the question, and I hope the president and his people are starting to ask themselves this question, that what is-what is the alternative? Are we going to put our troops in the middle of a civil war? Who are they going to fight? This will be slaughter of immense proportions. The American people will not put up with it, the leadership in Congress will not put up with it. I hope this administration has got a way out of this, because yes that’s a tough question, Bob, but the fact is that may well be the way it turns out. But we cannot put American troops, and ask them to do the things that we’re asking them to do in the middle of a civil war, and that’s where it’s headed.

Yes, they won’t do anything of consequence before the mid-term elections in November - the real question is what the hell CAN they do after that?  Since it was based on @#$% in the first place, and they’ve done nothing but try to feed us %^$#!!  ever since - how can it ever be anything but CRAP!!!!  They can’t admit they were mistaken, got it wrong, oops!  They’d rather keep on bombing and killing, lying and invading instead - remember the Einstein quote about insanity?  These guys are just going to keep on doing the same old thing over and over until someone MAKES THEM STOP!  We the People are the only check and balance that they haven’t bought out yet - I hope!  It is our patriotic duty to examine the actions (and inactions - think Hurricane Katrina) of our “elected” leaders and hold them accountable according to the laws and traditions of our great Constitution.  Those Founding Fathers knew a thing or two about despotic leaders in league with religion - too bad funding for education has been cut so badly that no one remembers their history.  Perhaps that’s part of the “plan”?  An uninformed citizenry is much more easily manipulated.  Just slash schools, buy up the media and rig the voting process - do I hear EMPIRE?  Nah…not here in America!!!  We’d put a stop to that, right?

I ECHO, Devine’s thoughts—that was a perfect analysis.
It seems that chaos is part of the “grand plan.”

Right you are, Alex. Not that i think military men should have an inside track to political office, but in a quagmire we should listen to those who have seen war.

Great website Operation 2012. Thanks for the info.

I suspect no agreements will be made by Bush/Cheney to change anything in Iraq until after November 7, 2006.  The Right Wing Republicans are fearful of losing control of the Senate and House, so ‘stay the course’ (which is best understood as ‘stray from sanity’ won’t change prior to that date.  Additionally, more troops were likely needed so as to prevent a coup where Hussein would regain power.  As I understand it, Hussein’s trial ends in October which, of course, coincidentally is the month before November 2006.  Either the jury will deem him guilty of war crimes and have him executed or hung before November 7, 2006 so Bush and Right Wing Republicans can use that as a political boon or we will be fed the BS that he died of a “hunger strike” so as prevent him from regaining power.  As for Lebanon/Israel, that is looking more like Plan C, a larger war against Iran which fits nicely in with Bush/Cheney’s and the Republicans’ desire for “regime change” and “a new Middle East” which is really about stealing the oil reserves from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and, ultimately, Iran.  Since Bush/Cheney and the Right Wing Republicans were put into office by Cromagnan Christian fundamentalists, avaricious corporations in the oil, pharmaceutical, defense and media industries and by the Neanderthal Neoconservative Jews, it is no wonder that they all clash with the unevolved, backward Mesolithic Muslims.  I suspect the sane and evolved Reform Jews, Jewish Kabbalists, progressive and moderate Christians, moderate Muslims, Buddhists, Taoists and peaceful agnostics need to collaborate about starting life on another planet and leave this planet to the other insane, unevolved, unsophisticated, boorish, immature, odious loons who would rather kill themselves and everybody else than to just agree to disagree and equitably share.  With psychologically immature loons that are currently in power in America, there is no way they have the competency, psychological maturity, knowledge and diplomatic skills to know how to respond to a 4,000 year old unevolved mindset.  Bombing people into accepting peace and democracy, occupying people’s land and killing leaders to force liberty on them is the other side of the coin of mass extermination.  As Edwin Schrodinger, the great physicist said, “It is easier to split an atom than to change a belief”.  Something Bush and his incompetent entourage simply cannot understand.

No “regional conference” would lead anywhere, since no Arab regime will (in public) sanction occupation by the US in Iraq or Israel in Lebanon.  Nor will W admit to needing “Old Europe” to rescue him from folly.

The answer is that US forces will be able to throttle the level of Iraqi violence long enough, certainly long enough to get US public opinion through the November US elections.  After that, there will be continued reliance on Plan A: as the Iraqi forces stand up, we will stand back.  Plan B is “see Plan A, but put Karl, Rush, Kristol, and Fox in high gear to cut down naysayers.”  Plan C: a bigger war (Iran & Lebanon).

“PERVERSIONS TO THE IMPERIALIST AMERICAN PIGS”

(a short play about a day in the life of a Baghdad family -Bashir, a young man, enters his family’s apartment and greets his father.)

Bashir: Greetings Father, Praise be to Allah.
Father: Praise be to Allah.
Bashir: It’s hot in here. Did we have any electricity today?
Father: One hour, tops. May Allah rain perversions on the Imperialist American Pigs!
Bashir: That sucks. A thousand perversions to the Infidels.
Father: What did you do today?
Bashir: Praise be to Allah, I put out one roadside IED and helped prepare a suicider for a   Mosque mission at evening prayers.
Father: Praise be to Allah, but did you stop by the Coalition Forces Outreach Center like   your Mother asked you to?
Bashir: Yes, Papa I did.
Father: And did you tell them that death squads   have been harassing and threatening your Mother, sisters and our neighbors?
Bashir: Yes Papa I did. They said that they already knew and intended to step up patrols. They were very sympathetic.
Father: A thousand perversions to the Imperialist Occupiers.
Bashir: Praise be to Allah, a thousand perversions.

Don’t you just love to see the men in office who actually served in the military, boots on the ground, combat hardened public servants like Chuck Hagel, (Sergeant E-5, Vietnam War 1967-68, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge) John Murtha, (commander of the 34th Special Infantry Company, volunteered in Vietnam 1966-67, battalion staff officer S-2 Intelligence Section, Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal) and John Kerry (Lieutenant US Navy in Vietnam War 1966-70, four months as Swift boat commanding officer, Silver Star, Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts) being told how to run a war by such brave patriots as George Bush (AWOL from National Guard service 1972-73) and Dick Cheney (4 draft deferments and a 3-A ‘hardship’ status application)

Chickenhawks accusing soldiers of cutting and running? Never did a blacker pot call the kettle a coward.

Chuck Hagel is my Senator, and I’m sick and tired of the MSM and bloggers alike fawning over him whenever he opposes the Administration. He talks, but he don’t walk. He is a staunch conservative when you look at his voting record. No, really…he is. And you know, he says this, it’s okay. Ed Kennedy says it two years ago, and he’s a traitor.
As I write this I realize I’m so tired, so fed up. My head hurts trying to figure out why up is down, why black is white, why right is wrong. I’m tired and depressed as I didn’t sign up for “this.” This world. Life wasn’t supposed to be this way. I remember Clinton’s bridge to the 21st Century, and it has been deviously sabotaged by zealots.
I hope there will be a change in November, but for all I know, it’s already fixed.
