Colbert Accuses Congresswoman of Sexual Harassment

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert, in his endlessly entertaining mission to interview every member of Congress, sat down with D.C. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton on Thursday.  While she might not have gotten the joke, the congresswoman demonstrated great patience as she and Colbert argued over whether Washington, D.C., is part of the United States.  The pair went on to debate the pronunciation and origin of his name, whether he looked gay and, best of all, whether Rep. Norton, who helped write sexual harassment guidelines, was undressing Colbert with her eyes.

Watch it:

Partial transcript:

Colbert: You helped write the federal sexual harassment guidelines during the Carter administration, correct?

Norton: Indeed.

Colbert: Then why are you undressing me with your eyes, Congresswoman?

Norton: You flatter yourself, sir!

Colbert: It looked like you just raped me with your eyes just then.

Norton: What makes you think that I find you attractive at all?

Colbert: I don’t know if you’re finding me attractive.

Norton: I didn’t find you gay.

Colbert: Well what’s the other option?

Norton: The other option is to, to look at you and see a plain vanilla man who’s asking me questions.

Colbert: I thought I was French vanilla, Congresswoman.

And Congresswoman Norton was superb, whether she was in on the joke or fielding an Ali-G-type interview. She’d make a great president—too bad she wasn’t born in the United States.

EHN TOTALLY gets the joke. Just because she plays along with Colbert’s mock-serious tone doesn’t mean she doesn’t get it! She plays off him brilliantly. Go, Eleanor!

In the way a child can accidentally ask an embarrassing question, Colbert is brilliant in exposing the absurdities of the administration through innocent questions and witty observations.  I love the reactions he solicits!

I think it is wrong to harrass any sex, especially if you do not know what their gender orientation is. I also think it is wrong to be gay, because if you have a foetus and want to name it as a legal inheritor in your living will, or open a bank account in its person, how will you know what gender it will be for the record? Also if it enlarges or grows up it will be scientifically hard or illegal to get Stem cells from it. So do not harrass any undeclared sexual object..

I am 90 years old and have a monumental crush on Steve, so no disgrace if a woman undresses him with her eyes.  He is indeed a genius and I love him for his MIND, but Women, Have a ball!!

This guy just makes brillant TV!  Whether the person gets it (Wexler) or not (Norton), these are moments of genius.  He belongs in the pantheon with Ali G, Borat and Bruno.
