GOP Rep. Designs Electric Fence for Mexican Border: ‘We Do This With Livestock All The Time’

Mexico Border Fence

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) showed off to Congress a model of an electric fence he designed for America’s southern border. He said its nonlethal current works fine with barnyard animals.

  • Watch the video
  • It’s a tough calculus these Republicans are facing: wondering whether they’ll lose more conservative votes by appearing soft on immigration or more Hispanic votes by lumping Latinos in with livestock.

  • Think Progress:

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) went on the House floor on Tuesday to discuss a fence that he “designed” for the southern boarder. (King constructed a model of the fence as he was speaking.) King’s design features a wire electrified “with the kind of current that would not kill somebody.” King noted that “we do this with livestock all the time.” Watch it:

Absolutely right, even quality locks will not deter proffesional burglars ,but my snarling doberman always does the trick. So how about lining up dobermans (dobermen?) from sea to shining sea. I am giving the idea free to Rep. King. Heck, he can even bring a doberman to the House of Representative for a demo. That appears to be his forte.

Isn’t there ANYBODY in Congress who’s BRAIN is bigger than his/her EGO?

The whole notion of building a fence from sea to shining sea along the USA’s south border with Mexico is so immature and stupid it staggers the senses. Some of these elected mini-minds have even suggested building another fence to separate the USA from Canada. (Boy would I like the contract to provide materials to build that one… THOUSANDS OF MILES… woweee!)

NEITHER fence will prevent determined people from crossing the border any more than putting stronger locks on your doors will prevent entry by a professional or determined amateur.

All either activity will clearly accomplish is to WASTE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS and make those in charge of the USA look like even more complete NITWITS than they already do. (But then the USA is very good at concocting EXPENSIVE schemes that don’t work… how about the War on Drugs, for starters?)

So build your fence(s) and install your surveillance equipment that no one will watch. Then start looking for tunnels, ladders, aircraft, and BOATS or even swimmers going around both ends of the fence(s), etc. etc.

The whole notion is RIDICULOUS. But not as ridiculous as the reality that members of Congress are actually DISCUSSING WAYS TO DO IT!

Nice Demo fence. Do you suppose the “our little construction company” he mentioned provided that little prop?

It ain’t just Latinos these people view as farm animals. IMO people like the esteemed mr. king look at most people as nothing but cattle.

Unfortunately, this kind of political stunt, and these kinds of comments are becoming all too familiar for Rep. King.  Here in western Iowa, we’re becoming all too familiar with this kind of rhetoric…and probably (one would hope) don’t represent a majority view, even among the largely conservative Republicans in the district.  Perhaps, rather than building fences, Mr. King should learn the fine art of mending them.

What preconception? The congressman was not referring to Canadians.

Every rancher knows how easily an electric fence is shorted out. It’s a really dumb idea.

Hispanic votes by lumping Latinos in with livestock.

Of course, the subtext of that remark is that “Latino” == “illegal alien or supporter of illegal border crossers”. As in yesterday’s post featuring the thoughts of Nativo Lopez, perhaps this site should rethink its preconceptions.
