Dick Cheney

Vice President Dick Cheney

Watch the PBS documentary on the vice president’s post-9/11 actions that has the progressive blogosphere buzzing.

PBS:

In “The Dark Side,” FRONTLINE tells the story of the vice president’s role as the chief architect of the war on terror, and his battle with Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet for control of the “dark side.” Drawing on more than 40 interviews and thousands of documents, the film provides a step-by-step examination of what happened inside the councils of war.

Early in the Bush administration, Cheney placed a group of allies throughout the government who advocated a robust and pre-emptive foreign policy, especially regarding Iraq. But a potential obstacle was Tenet, a holdover from the Clinton administration who had survived the transition by bypassing Cheney and creating a personal bond with the president.

After the attacks on 9/11, Cheney seized the initiative and pushed for expanding presidential power, transforming America’s intelligence agencies and bringing the war on terror to Iraq. Cheney’s primary ally in this effort was Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

Talking about the “dark side” of dick cheney implies that there is another side to this man when there isn’t.

Finally, comments re the Dark Side.  I’ve been scouring the “internets” for days trying to find what we the people are thinking about this brilliant documentary! The very saddest part of all of this is the melting of Colin Powell, and how he has just dissolved into some great depressive void.  After all, it was his credibility that made me think twice about what was going on with this run up to war!  Had I been a congressmen, knowing what a straight shooter he was, I would have believed him! He knows that.  He knows how the American people felt about him.  He was too good a soldier!  He did what he was commanded to do!  Isn’t that what the nazi generals did?

Remind me to donate large sums of money to PBS. Too bad the episode is not running daily on all main steam stations. It is my opinion that most of this nation is is in great denial due to the lack of programs such as these. I am embarressed to say that I am one of the many who was led by the mass media for many years. I didn’t take time to listen, learn and research to form my own opinions until the last few years. I found the show instrumental in finally connecting the complex and tangled corrupt pieces together. It was very well presented leaving me speechless and horrified. I find it very believable that what has been presented hasn’t even scratched the surface of the real truth. And why does it feel like we are in store for much more before this is all said and done. The real axis of evil are the big business oil men in the white house. God help us all.

I have to say that I haven’t watched an episode of Frontline that has disappointed me. I watched the last hour of The Dark Side (aptly named) since I taped the beginning. Without a doubt, the Cheney-Rumsfeld tag team was the driving force for persuading Pres. Bush for invading Iraq. I knew that the intelligence for the war was faulty but I was horrified to find out that the Office of the Vice-President along with Rumsfeld basically told the intelligence services to go with the “window dressing” instead of cold, hard facts. George Tenet’s cowardice (or greed to become a player) is one of the reasons so many American soliders have died. I never knew how angry, even now, the intelligence agencies are in regards to the Office of the Vice-President and Rumsfeld and I can’t blame them. I still can’t understand how Condi Rice stood by knowing that the intelligence being presented to the President was sub-standard. The Dark Side shows the series of events put into play, by amoral, greedy individuals, that went into getting the U.S. into a war that it is so entrenched in that to withdraw may cause the entire region to be plunged into a major civil war or dare I say, be the catalyst for World War III?

THE REASON YOU HAVE PEOPLE LIKE CHENEY, RUMSFELD, ETC., ETC., IS BECAUSE DECENT SANE PEOPLE WILL NOT DO THE THINGS NECESSARY TO USE THE POWER INHERITANT IN THE US GOVERNMENT FOR THE OVERT MADNESS WE HAVE SEEN SINCE THESE PEOPLE STOLE THE OFFICE. DID HITLER HAVE SANE, DECENT MEN CARRYING OUT HIS MADNESS…...CERTAINLY NOT. BUT THIS DOES NOT TAKE GWB OR JEB OR DADDY OFF THE HOOK. THEY KNEW THEY WERE GIVING POWER TO A MAD DOG, OR A PACK OF MAD DOGS,NOR DOES IT ABSOLVE WTP AS WE DID NOT WANT TO KNOW WHAT A CLOWN GWB WAS AND THEN REASON THAT IF YOU WANT A CLOWN FOR A FRONT MAN, THERE NEEDS TO BE SOME SERIOUS SCRUTINY OF YOUR MOTIVES. BUT THEIR MOTIVES HAD BEEN PUBLISHED, HAD THEY NOT, WITHOUT GWB AS SIGNATORY BUT THAT IS A GLARING PIECE OF EVIDENCE TOO.

Well, it`s clear that the quagmire in Iraq belongs unequivically to the Bush-Cheney-Rice-Rumsfeld gang. I think Frontline did a pretty good job of credibly documenting who is responsible for getting us here and how they went about it.

What was Cheney thinking? That`s not too difficult to figure out. He and Rumsfeld believe in the effectiveness of military power to achieve strategic goals when the President has unimpeded executive authority.

And they had a goal: to protect our nation`s access to oil, the energy we need for continued world domination without resorting to nuking the opposition ? which would have really, REALLY bad consequences.

Too bad they screwed it up.

Wow, did they ever screw it up! Iraq didn`t have WMD (weapons of mass destruction) ... nor were we welcomed with strewn flowers at our soldiers feet ? and now Iran is allying itself with a government of Iraq that we USHERED in while Iran thumbs its nose at us on nuclear technology ? and North Korea stockpiles nukes as it prepares to launch a longer range missle ? and Russia and China increase their influence vis-à-vis our global interests.

And the Bush-Cheney-Rice-Rumsfeld solution? ?Stay the course!? And they say it with a straight face.

What?s the definition of insanity? When we keep doing the same thing and expect different results.
