Bush interview
From U.S. News & World Report

In an interview with eight conservative columnists on Oct. 25, the president claimed that only 25 percent of Americans want U.S. troops pulled out of Iraq. But today’s Gallup poll says that 63% favor setting a timetable for withdrawal.

  • Check out the full audio of the session, or a transcript, or an introduction by U.S. News’ Michael Barrone.

  • Michael Barrone at U.S. News:

This afternoon I had the privilege of being one of eight columnists interviewing George W. Bush in the Oval Office. The others were Tony Blankley of the Washington Times, Daniel Henninger of the Wall Street Journal, Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post, Lawrence Kudlow of CNBC, Kathleen Parker of the Orlando Sentinel, Mark Steyn of the Chicago Sun-Times, and Byron York of National Review-all conservatives of various stripes. Like many others who have been with Bush in the Oval Office, I have found him to be much more articulate and forceful in that setting than he often is in press conferences or in taking questions from traveling reporters. The interview was on the record, so we are posting an MP3 audio recording (High bandwidth | Low bandwidth) of the whole hour. I think you’ll find it compelling listening. It’s the closest thing many people will get to spending an hour or so in the Oval Office with the 43rd president.

    I’ll just make a few observations here…

It appears that Bush (rather conveniently) neglected to mention the fact that the poll he described consisted entirely of Fox News viewers…

Don’t believe anything he says unless you know it is true.  For example, the only time I know Bush told the truth was when he was walking with Karl Rove into the White House from his helicopter and some reporter asked about the disclosure of the identity of an undercover CIA agent.  Bush said,“If any one in my administration did this they will be taken care of.”  A lot of people thought he meant they would be fired.  In fact he meant exaactly what he said.  They would be taken care of, i.e. they would be protected.  Why else would Rove not be indicted for treason?  Will Fitzgerald get an appointment as a federal judge for his aid in this protection of Rove?

    NO MORE LIES!

When the intelligence that you get is driven by the policy, rather than the policy driven by the intelligence, we end up in the situation that we are in, debilitated, now three years and counting. I must admit that I do not have the answer to this most critical and devastating problem, but I am willing to wager that neither does, President Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld or Rice. These people haven’t only dethroned us but they have created for us a world-wide detestation. We must be careful in the dissemination of the word, “Patriot.” Speaking out against the elected officials of your Government in lieu of their phantasmagoric rationales and internecine policies, does not make you “unpatriotic,” neither does it put you against the Military. The Military “must” follow orders, so they are doing what they are ordered to do. Remember, they must follow orders from Deusexmachina Bush. Therefore, the only thing “unpatriotic,” is to say or do nothing, and continue to watch your sons, daughters, wives, husbands, friends and the innocent Iraqis slaughtered by the raging Mesopotamian factions, that have been living in strife since the inception of life. Because Mr. Bush is meretricious, does not mean that we must just sit back and say or do nothing. This derelict vessel has placed us in troubled waters, but we do not have to allow the ship-wreck to occur!

The great pity is that we, i.e., Americans and America’s soldiers, are stuck with Iraq.  It was busted in our name and we have to fix it.  Who knows at what cost in blood and treasure?  George Carlin is right:  ignorant greedy voters get what they deserve:  ignorant, greedy politicians.

Bush said the other day that if he thought America would be as safe if he pulled the troops out of Iraq, he would do so tomorrow.  Here, I thought it went into Iraq to make Iraq a better place for Iraqis.  Now I find out that he could care less about the Iraqis.  We should not be making our country safe by killing innocent Iraqis.
