A Culturally Sensitive Teach-In With Victoria Jackson

Victoria Jackson, “SNL” throwback and low-rent Lady Gaga, took another big misstep in her troubling transition from comedy to punditry with this Shariah-themed episode of “PolitiChicks,” which would play like self-parody if Jackson had the capacity for critical self-reflection.

Zuccotti at Midnight on the Eve

Occupiers rang in the New Year on Saturday night with a game of tug-of-war with the NYPD at Zuccotti Park. Instead of rope, however, activists and police officers struggled over the metal barricades that have surrounded the area since late September. Dawn Sunday saw the barriers replaced and the park closed to the public.

‘Left, Right & Center’: Third Party Politics

Does America need a third political party? The backlash against Obama on the left and the tepid support for Romney (the “anyone but Romney” vote has gone from Bachmann to Perry to Cain to Gingrich) would seem to make this a fine time for an independent party to emerge.

“Democracy Now!” hears from Alaa Abd El Fattah, a prominent Egyptian activist and blogger just released after 56 days in one of the country’s worst prisons on charges of inciting violence against the military. ‘Left, Right & Center’: Extreme Makeover: U.S. Economy Edition

Do Americans really want a tectonic shift in our economic system? Or are we happier “muddling through”? And most important, what would Jesus do in this seemingly relentless recession? Truthdig’s own Robert Scheer has some thoughts on all of the above this week, as do show regulars Arianna Huffington, Tony Blankley and Matt Miller.

Obama Gives Boehner, Reid an Earful on Deadlock

So here we are, well into the thick of the holiday season, and no agreement has been reached on Capitol Hill about extending unemployment benefits and keeping payroll taxes from sudden escalation as the new year begins. Thus, President Obama dialed up a couple of key members of Congress, as spokesman Jay Carney described Wednesday.

‘Democracy Now!’: The Koreas of the Future

As Amy Goodman points out in this report from Tuesday’s edition of “Democracy Now!,” North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s death came as a surprise to the U.S., which also underscores a more general lack of knowledge in America about either of the Koreas. Fortunately, she brings in some experts on the region to bring us up to speed.

Romney Tackles Crucial Late-Night Jokefest Test

Sure, he’s tall and suave (for a Republican), and fine, his politics resonate on at least an acceptable level in GOP circles, except for that whole health care thing, but Monday, presidential hopeful Mitt Romney faced one of the biggest litmus tests for today’s politician: cracking wise on late-night TV.
