Stewart Makes a Prophetic Bush-Merkel Sexual Joke

“The Daily Show” host was just being playful last night when he joked that President Bush could have been caught on the open mike talking about German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s “camel toe” (a lewd sexual reference). But in light of the just-publicized unsolicited massage Bush gave to Merkel, Stewart is looking prophetic all of a sudden.

Bush and Blair

Open Mike Catches Bush Blaming Syria for Hezbollah Escalation

At the G8 summit for world leaders, President Bush was caught on a live microphone telling Tony Blair that he held Syria accountable for Hezbollah’s actions against Israel.
“What they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it’s over,” Bush told Blair while chewing on a buttered roll.
Important: This is not a hypocrisy alert. Bush’s unguarded statements were for the most part consistent with his public ones. But it’s still a fascinating glimpse into his manner of interaction with America’s closest ally.

Colbert to Suskind: We Need a ‘Zero Percent Doctrine’

Stephen Colbert tells author Ron Suskind that Vice President Cheney’s so-called “One Percent Doctrine”—whereby a one percent chance of terrorists obtaining WMDs must be treated as a certainty—is “soft on terror.”

  • Colbert: “One percent? Shouldn’t it be a zero percent doctrine? I mean even if there’s no chance that someone’s a threat to the United States, and they just look at us funny, shouldn’t we just—[beats a fist into his palm]—tag ‘em?”

GOP Rep. Designs Electric Fence for Mexican Border: ‘We Do This With Livestock All The Time’

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) showed off to Congress a model of an electric fence he designed for America’s southern border. He said its nonlethal current works fine with barnyard animals.

  • It’s a tough calculus these Republicans are facing: wondering whether they’ll lose more conservative votes by appearing soft on immigration or more Hispanic votes by lumping Latinos in with livestock.
