Globes Cool to ‘Milk’

Despite widespread acclaim and gushing praise from some tough critics, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association largely overlooked Gus Van Sant’s “Milk” in choosing this year’s Golden Globe nominees, although Sean Penn is among the HFPA’s picks for best actor.
It would seem to be a battle between “Frost/Nixon” vs. “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” at the Golden Globes, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. handing out five noms apiece to both films, including picture, director, actor, screenplay and score.
“The Reader,” “Revolutionary Road” and “Slumdog Millionaire” rounded out the drama category, with each pic landing four overall nominations.
Focus Features had high hopes for biopic “Milk,” but only received one nom for Sean Penn as best actor.
The Globes, chosen by the 85 members of the HFPA, at times have been a bellwether for the Academy Awards. But with nominations spread out across 31 films, this year [becomes] yet another open race for Hollywood.
