Swiss Court Accepts Polanski’s $4.5M Bail Request

Will Roman Polanski spend the holidays at his mountain chalet in Gstaad? That could well be the case after Polanski’s latest bail offer, this time to the tune of $4.5 million, was accepted by a Swiss court Wednesday, although the 76-year-old director is still considered a flight risk as he awaits possible extradition to the United States.  —KA

“L.A. Now” in The Los Angeles Times:

Legal experts said the bail is likely to lengthen what is expected to be a fierce battle over whether Polanski should be extradited to Los Angeles to face sentencing for unlawful intercourse with a 13-year-old girl more than three decades ago.

The decision also raises other questions, given that Polanski fled from the U.S. just before his sentencing in 1978. Swiss justice officials have repeatedly denied his bail requests, saying he’s a flight risk.

Under the terms of the bail, Polanski would be restricted to a chalet he owns in Gstaad, a ski resort in the foothills of Mt. Blanc. The town has long been known as a celebrity hangout, with David Niven, Richard Burton and Roger Moore among its frequent visitors in the past.

Johannes-couldn’t have said it better.

Actually though, yeah he did what he did a third of a century ago, and has led a pretty law-abiding life (by most accounts) ever since. Is it really even a little JUST for him to have to face prosecution now, especially when his “victim” had long ago said she didn’t want to see him prosecuted further. Yes the guy was a child molester/rapist THIRTY-TWO years ago. Clearly he isn’t one now nor has been for many, many years. How about a little progressive, liberal thinking on this, instead of PC bullshit.

This should have been done years ago. He is a criminal; but I am not sure what the point is now. Most people with money actually DO escape justice.

He’s as good as gone! Gstaad is only 40 miles from the French border. I’ve lived close to that border, on the Swiss side. Been across the border to France, no police, no border guards, no passport check, no stopping, no nothing. And once he’s on the French side, he’s safe.

Or he could simply jump in a private plane. Gstaad has a small airport.

Electronic monitoring? By the time they notice he’s gone and react, he’ll be in Paris.

So, yeah, good work Swiss justice. Kiss your prisoner goodbye because you won’t see him again.
