Swank Cans Managers After Chechen Birthday Surprise

American actress Hilary Swank attends a concert in the new “Grozny City” residential and commercial complex in the Chechen capital Grozny on Oct. 5.

Turns out even hard-boiled Chechen presidents like their photo ops with movie stars, but it doesn’t always work the other way around. Actress Hilary Swank just learned the hard way that she should pick her celebrity endorsements, not to mention her management team, a little more carefully after making a cameo appearance at the 35th birthday party for Chechnya’s current leader, President Ramzan Kadyrov, earlier this month.

Somewhere in the sequence of events between her paid attendance at “King Ramzan’s” birthday bash Oct. 5 and the firing of key members of her inner professional circle by month’s end, Swank caught wind of Kadyrov’s reputation—more specifically, allegations of torture and other human rights abuses and implications of his involvement in the death of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya in 2006.

By Monday, Swank had cut longtime manager Jason Weinberg and at least two other handlers loose and also pledged to part with the cash.  —KA

BBC:

It comes after human rights groups criticised the star for being paid to attend the event.

Swank later apologised, saying she was unaware Kadyrov has been accused of abusing his opponents.

The actress, 37, also promised to distribute her reported six-figure attendance fee to “various charitable organisations”.

Great display of stupendous ignorance on her part.

Hilary is also thinking of canceling her appearance at Vlad the Impaler’s Bar Mitzvah bash.

that’s why she “has people”—in theory they are charged with vetting such issues-
- they failed, she canned them and will divest the proceeds.

blaming her is like blaming folk that invested w Madoff—if someone has a good
rep then you trust their judgement to manage your affairs.

Too bad,I like Hillary Swank, great actress with a cool name.Seems though, she must have Borat’s brain to not research a client who paid her a six digit salary for a cameo appearance. She sure didn’t seem dumb in the interviews I saw.Either she’s lying or a fool. Most likely both….Tis o.k.,giving the money to charity and smoking her minions should wash her indiscretion clean. She’s off my Christmas card list though.

—- I find it hard to believe she went to a foreign country blind without a simple google search.—-

Personally I do not find that hard to believe at all. She hired those people to organise things for her after all. And she likely did not feel like doing their work for them.

That said, I will agree with you if you argue that a 6 figure fee likely disinclined her to look very hard at things. She is hardly the first, or the last, artist to do so though.

And to be fair, as recent (and not so recent) psychological studies showed the kind of person who amasses enough wealth to throw a couple of million dollar at a internationally famous star to liven up their birthday tend to be on the psychopathic side of the spectrum…

Robe: Brad Pitt was on Bill Maher in ‘09 saying America was “just fine” and also enjoys promoting Ayn Rand.

Really? So why does he and Angelina spend so much of their time at a vineyard above St.Tropez in the south of France.

No room left in Napa Valley? Or they just want to get away from the crushing bling-bling of Hollywood?

Celebrities tend to be uninformed idiots when it comes to geopolitics or other social issues in general. Not all of course, but this is why some celebs should stick to their work. Swank is of course not alone, Brad Pitt was on Bill Maher in ‘09 saying America was “just fine” and also enjoys promoting Ayn Rand.

Looks like she got busted and then decided to throw
her handlers under the bus.

If you google “Ramzan Kadyrov”, the first hit is his
Wiki page. Without even reading the main text, you
see the following sub-headings:

10 Accusations of human rights abuses
11 Other issues
11.1 Sex scandal
11.2 Call to quarantine proceeds of horse race
11.3 Honor killings
11.4 Wikileaks

She did this for the money, not expecting it to
damage her reputation. I find it hard to believe she
went to a foreign country blind without a simple
google search.
