Playing Dick Cheney

White House / Karen Ballard

Who will be the man to take on the dramatic challenge—and that combination smirk/sneer expression—of stepping into the shoes of the notorious Bush VP, Dick Cheney? Since HBO announced its upcoming Cheney miniseries, the ideas have started to fly around on newspapers and blogs: Tommy Lee Jones, OK, but Jeff Bridges? That’d take some range.  —KA

“Popwatch” on Entertainment Weekly:

Comics later turned him into a cartoon — Jon Stewart made him sound like Batman’s enemy Penguin — or a Star Wars villain, but he remains the most dramatic figure of the period, in the purely Shakespearean sense. There’s his personal and political reaction to 9/11, his break with the Right on gay rights, the Valerie Plame Affair and Scooter Libby, and let’s not forget, his shooting his hunting pal in the face. From an acting point of view, he’s a great part, and it should be interesting to see who HBO recruits. Richard Dreyfuss looked the part in Oliver Stone’s W, but he was a little too overtly Machiavellian. HBO’s Cheney shouldn’t be villainous. Can’t he be a tragic hero? The Washington Post has proposed five actors to play Cheney, including the outside-the-box idea of Jeff Bridges.

“I hear the devil is in between jobs right now…”

ROFLMAO!  Sadly, though, he is not; he is QUITE busy doing what he does best…

surfnow:

Part of the problem is Americans’ sad lack of education re (and, in many cases, apathy toward) history, both domestic and foreign.  Our own history is rife with false flag attacks and black ops in which U.S. citizens were killed (though admittedly most of these ops were abroad).  Even if one has a problem with the reality that Pearl Harbor was such an attack (i.e., that FDR knew about it and allowed it to happen to create support for the U.S. entering the war), there is zero question that the Guld of Tonkin incident was such a “false flag” attack, and that Johnson knew that very well by the time he went on TV and lied about it.  And, of course, the Reichstag fire (set by Hitler, blamed on the communists), the Lusitania, the Maine, etc., etc.

The only difference with 9/11 was that it occurred on American soil and the death toll was higher.  (Though people seem to forget that the 1993 bombing on the WTC was instigated by the FBI - a FACT that appeared in no less an authority than the front page of The New York Times.)

Ignorance of history and an inability to believe that one’s government (or at least certain individuals and agencies therein) would sacrifice its own citizens for a political agenda lead to deep psychological “denial” of reality.

9/11 was the defining event of our age.  Yet WHAT it defined was manipulated by those involved, rather than determined by a free-thinking, educated, savvy public.  The propaganda machine started churning within hours of the event, leading us into the neocon agenda both here and abroad.  The lies, the spin, the obfuscation, the corporate control of media - all of this helped them to create the climate of fear that was necessary to “control” the populace, and define “the story.”

Sort of reminds me of another country in another time not so long ago…

Peace.

Maani:
I love the way the Amerikan public accepts every single “official story” no matter what. The System has been so effective in neutralizing the word ” conspiracy”- as if corporations and the Amerikan “leadership” are not continually conspiring to steal and lie. Of course Cheney and the others used 9-11- if they didn’t completely plan it, they certainly did nothing to prevent it. I guarantee Cheney was never happier as he was on that terrible day. I don’t know why it’s so difficult for Amerikans to accept the fact that the elite are up to no damn good. As I always tell my students, a mugger in our city may kill you for what’s in your wallet; don’t you think the elite won’t do at least that for the hundreds of billions they eventually conspire to steal?

To me that sneering smirk looks more like the effects from a
stroke. Which the dick does so deserve.

Why would I want to see a horror movie about him when I have
lived through his criminal regime with lover w? Luckily I won’t
have to watch, no t.v.

I agree re Sheen in Dead Zone.  Also the president in Clear & Present Danger, and the Senator in The Shooter.

Aarky:

For those who question the “official story” of 9/11, Cheney is also probably the main architect (and certainly the main enabler) of that false flag op.

Peace.

Unless they tell the truth about this evil bastard, what is the point of arguing who should portray this war criminal? He was one of the enablers that spread the lies over and over about why we needed to attack Iraq. He tried at least twice to precipitate war against Iran. In one instance, the Joint Chiefs challanged him with, “If Iran retaliates for our attack, how far do we go to all-out war”? That attack did not happen. He had sychophantic Army officers promoted who helped spread his constant lies that Iran was making all the explosive shaped charges that were blowing up our troops in Iraq, even while the specific plans were available at Global Security.org and shops were being found all over Iraq. There should not be any TV program about Cheney, but rather a hangman’s noose and the same techniques that were used on German Generals at Nuremberg. They all died from strangulation because of our enept Army hangmen. The shortest death was 13 minutes, the longest over 20 minutes. This monstor deserves nothing but the worst type of death.

Huh?!?!?!  Are you suggesting that Cheney is NOT “overtly Machiavellian?”  What planet are you living on?  What are you smoking?

Dreyfuss was brilliant in the role and should do it again.
