Lights out: Oprah Winfrey, pictured here in 2005, has set a 2011 end date for her syndicated show.

So long, “Oprah”—in 2011, that is. Oprah Winfrey’s eponymous show went national in 1986, and, on Thursday, the talk show host and international media mogul gave notice when she’ll call it a wrap: Sept. 9, 2011, just a day over 25 years since her daytime reign began.  —KA

Variety:

Winfrey broke the news to staffers at her Chicago-based Harpo production company on Thursday. She’ll officially announce her exit on Friday.

Whether or not that means Winfrey will launch a new talker on her burgeoning cable partnership with Discovery, OWN, remains to be announced—but Winfrey is expected to have a major presence on the cabler.

It’s no secret Discovery topper David Zaslav would like to see the host move her show to the cable channel, which is expected to launch in January 2011.

[...] Rumors of Winfrey’s departure had been heavy over the last few weeks, after key “Oprah Winfrey Show” staffer Lisa Erspamer, who had been co-executive producer of the syndie strip since 2006, was tapped as Chief Creative Officer of OWN.

She is the first black billionairess.
She has made many generous charitable contributions.
She has advanced the cause of women’s equality.
She has millions of admirers, which indicates she
gave something they needed, for whatever reason.
She has encouraged millions of people to get and education and read books.
She helped some whites to at least partially overcome race prejudice.
She overcame many obstacles to succeed in terms
that most Americans admire.
She did most of this by “smart” commercializing of herself and her many abilities.
She did all this despite a rough childhood.

Not an Oprah ‘hater’.  Just never liked her show. And then there’s the response of having something you don’t like and find useless massively hyped and shoved down your throat for way, way too long.

I love the comment below about its time for someone else to get a chance.  I do feel that as a society we should do that.  Say to someone “Congratulations!  You’ve won!  You’ve succeeded.  You’ve won every prize. We’ll hold a big party to celebrate your success, and wish you a happy retirement.”

Because sometimes it is definitely time to move on and give other people a chance.  And a society benefits from a multitude of voices instead of one dominant voice.  Its not good for a society that attempts to be free and democratic to have a limited number of voices dominating the conversation.

Oprah is leaving her show in 2011 and the next presidential elections will be in 2012… coincidence?

Ms. Winfrey needs to spend her remaining time on air:

Apologizing for promoting and enriching mediocre
authors, healthcare nuts (couldn’t keep her fat behind
in shape), phony spiritualists, and shilling for a
slimy Chicago mulatto politician named Barack Hussein
Obama.  She can atone by paying for the
reconstruction/repairs of Gulf Coast homeowners, buy
the mortgages of those who lost homes to foreclosure
thanks to speculating by Wall Street, financing
schools that tell the real history of this wonderful
country while preparing you people to start own
businesses within their communities.

WOW——lots of Oprah haters.  All we know about is the public Oprah carefully honed and packaged, but what is her real story?!  Do I hear someone penning the unauthorized biography?!

Yes, go Oprah and don’t wait until 2011!  No one should be allowed to dominate the airwaves for so long.  Nobody!  What do you call someone who puts out a monthly magazine and can only see fit to put their own picture on the cover, month after month after month?  Megalomaniacal?
Give some other poor smuck a chance to make billions…hurry go…..

Adios, Orpah (what her misspelled named was originally -supposed- to read on her birth certificate). One thing before you go, can I have a new ‘10 Corvette? Pretty pretty please, with Tom Cruise on top?

I dig that the ‘Vette costs way more than a now-orphaned Pontiac (and you flat suckered -GM- into giving those 300+ cars away on your show, no wonder the company went bankrupt), but you can certainy afford it.

Tell you what, take it out of Stedman’s lunch money if you have to.
