Morrissey Dubs Royal Family ‘Benefit Scroungers’

Morrissey performs at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., in 2009.

What with all the excitement and viewing parties and official printable programs, it’s easy for some to get caught up in Wills ’n’ Kate mania. Singer Morrissey, however, remains immune to this particular affliction.

The iconic mope-rocker and onetime Smiths frontman registered his distaste for the impending spectacle in his country—not to mention the royal family in general— in an interview with BBC radio this week, proving once and for all that attaining knighthood is not high on his priority list.  —KA

“Music Mix” on EW.com:

Why would I watch the wedding?” said the ex-Smiths singer. “I couldn’t take any of that seriously at all. I don’t think the so-called Royal Family speak for England now and I don’t think England needs them. I do seriously believe they are benefit scroungers, nothing else.

The Royal Family possesses more class and discipline in their little fingernail than Morrissey could muster on his finest day with a boatload of help. I’m embarrassed just looking at his picture and I’d want rubber gloves on to be near enough to shake hands. What a mess!

And to bpawk who spouted from the depths of obvious ignorance “...remove the royal family off the dole? It costs so much $$ with no return” may I suggest that the $21 million dollars allotted to the Royal Family each year by the government is an amount that is DWARFED by the hundreds of millions tourists deposit to private businesses and the government coffers.

Remove the Royal Family from the UK and you’ve removed perhaps the biggest reason people visit.  Empty, unused palaces, while perhaps interesting to look at, aren’t going to motivate too many to shell out thousands to go to England just to tour them.

What rock to people such as this Morrissey crawl out from under… and why in hell does the media pay any attention?

And Morrissey keeps his tax money elsewhere I bet, get a life, be glad we are not being bombed every day or loosing our children to starvation! I thank god every day that I live in the UK!

We both thought the Royal Wedding was an amazing event on so many levels. And something for the UK to be truly proud of. This rocker band nitwit reflects the opinions of a very small minority. He only wishes his pathetic group could have such an audience.

Perhaps Morrissey’s evaluation of who is a scrounger would have a bit more relevance if he didn’t cheat his touring band members of their pay. You sell the website short publishing drivel about pop royalty opinions. Slow news cycle? Isn’t there some loner preacher burning holy texts somewhere that you can help elevate to “serious news” status?

Why aren’t people clamouring to remove the royal family off the dole? It costs so much $$ with no return. Follow the example of the French, who make money off Versailles even though there is no royal family to pay for. It doesn’t belong in a democracy and it’s an embarrassment. What all the media show is that main stream media is owned by huge corporations who like to distract the masses from real issues with this expensive circus.

I would much rather have the pomp and ceremony of the royal family than the shattering reality that our own country has become - run by fascists.

And I would rather have their form of government where a person from across the aisle can get up and have their say while the prime minister has to sit there and take it and then get up and defend themselves in public.

Seems more democratic to me, queen or no queen.

I loved the Queen Mum and Queen Elizabeth seems like a decent person. Most of the Brits love their queen. Can we say the same about our president?

And what are OUR inaugurations but defunct embarrassing spectacle? If you vote
for candidates for either party you may be the type who wants to watch a defunct
celebration in the UK.  Let’s move beyond narcissistic posts where a clueless guy
like Obama can roost for four and maybe eight years.
