M. Night Shyamalan’s Latest StinkerPosted on Jul 1, 2010
In this economy we don’t begrudge anyone a job, but we have to wonder why studios keep bailing this guy out. His latest, “The Last Airbender,” gets an average rating of only 8 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Roger Ebert writes that the film “is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.” His movies have gotten worse and worse reviews, and while some have actually made money, none of them came close to “The Sixth Sense.” Take a look at this chart showing the Rotten Tomates ratings for Shyamalan’s last five movies (Rotten Tomatoes aggregates and quantifies movie reviews):
New York’s Vulture broke the news to Shyamalan about his lousy reviews. The director, incidentally, is one who hates critics so much that he made an entire movie that made no sense about critics being bad. In response to that Ebert line, which the interviewer read to him, the director said, “It must be a language thing, in terms of a particular accent, a storytelling accent. I can only see it this certain way and I don’t know how to think in another language.” What an interesting way of explaining to yourself why people don’t like your movies. The flicks aren’t bad, just impossible to understand. —PZS Advertisement Previous item: ‘9500 Liberty’: Documenting the Immigration Debate Next item: Richard Shelton on Arctic Exploitation New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. This is reply to twrexx, and this persons response to my previous post.
“I am sorry you feel that way twrexx, in that you feel simply because I am stating the truth, I would lower my personal standards by “race baiting.” As well, what exactly is relevant in your response that the “creator of the show is Caucasian?” That makes no sense as a “point” in responding to my critique of the casting for this movie.”
I could go further in my response at what is insultingly apparent in the his casting preferences ....but will not.
I hope you are having a great day, and though I in no way agree with you, thanks for the response and sharing your thoughts.

I am a white Caucasian male. But when I watch a movie that takes place in ancient Persia I expect to see actors that look like what those people looked like, not white actors made up to look like Persians. And when a movie that takes place in the East, I expect to see people who are typical of that location. Is that so hard to ask, a little realism. Yes, I know it is only fantasy and I am unfortunate enough to still have an imagination, but when I read a book taking place in Africa I don’t imagine the African characters as being white folk made up and painted to be Blacks. Surely we are long past the time when John Wayne can portray Genghis Khan and not laugh how ridiculous that was. I was looking forward to seeing both the Prince of Persia and the Last Airbender but if Hollywood can’t match my imagination, why bother?

I like most of the movies that critics hate. They are watching them as part of their job, while I am after simple entertainment. If I like it, I don’t care what the critics think. Our criteria are too different to compare.

Rayven—hmmm someone is indeed stereotyping, and suprise its you. If you had a modicum of knowledge about the actual anime styled cartoon, you would know——are you sitting?——that the creator is a white man. Oh, and there is no such thing and never has been, a fire, water, air , or earth nation. So why again WOULD they have to be Asian? They dont is your answer. Go peddle your race baiting somewhere else.
Report thisas for the movie, I could give two flips about it. Stick with the cartoon.

In popular culture, as in politics and business, shit rises to the top.

I feel Mr. Shyamalan’s is very talented and creative, and I surprised that, “given how great this movie could have been (and the response…),” that he did not take further steps to ensure the quality of the movie. I will not go see the “Last Airbender” simply (and disgustingly I unfortunately must say) because he used Caucasian actors for an Asian influenced flick (it is insulting)......“What is up with that?”
Did Hollywood force him to cast Caucasian’s…..did he not understand what a dreadful mistake he was making? It is a shame…..a real shame. In closing I will say again, I feel he is talented and have enjoyed a lot of his movies ( I loved “Lady in the Water), and do not understand how he could “pollute” the Last Airbender with his casting preferences….terrible mistake.

And while Shyamalan’s crap keeps getting green lit, thousands of smarter, more challnging scripts are tossed aside by the studios.

One must keep in mind all the “great” other movies being offered for comparison. For every Toy Story or Avatar, there are 100 Airbenders in the mill.
Unbreakable and 6th Sense are among my all-time faves. Signs was OK and Village was so-so. Lady in the Water was bizarre and disappointing.
How about the Lucas Star Wars series? Was everybody happy with the prequels ?? Or the Star Trek movies? I think not.
I tend to listen more to moviegoers and my own tastes than to critics. For example, if you want to see a movie that Roger Ebert loved, check out “EraserHead” .... if you dare.

The Sixth Sense was pretty stupid too. I don’t know why anyone liked that either.
