Leonard Cohen performs at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., in 2009.

We will resist the impulse to do a cheesy riff on the lyrics of Leonard Cohen in reporting that the 76-year-old Canadian singer and poet is this year’s winner of Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias literary award. News of Cohen’s win hit the wires Wednesday, when the jury released its tribute to Cohen, but he’ll pick up the prize (including a good chunk of change) in the Spanish city of Oviedo this fall. —KA

Reuters Canada:

He won “for a literary work which has influenced three generations around the world by creating a sentimental imagery in which poetry and music are melded into an unchanging worth,” the jury citation read.

Cohen beat a field of 32 from countries including Argentina, France, Austria, Mexico and Britain.

Body Slide empirePie   May 21st, 2011

A terrorist nation slip slip slides to the no body brink
assassination by the godfather nation
from Manhattan to the Mediterranean sea
the rule of thumb from the Uncle Tom drop
no body, no rules; hiding in double speak Tom speak
sliding to the brink
sliding to the sea

hey who? hey who? hey who got slipped
into the sea quite respectfully
like fish food and rot from the head
an asset quite, quite dead

the body slide is the corporate slide
as we poison the sea
to live respectfully

slide the body in the sea
the no body entity
corporate hood
the hoods that ain’t
no corps to taint
no body no cover no wrap
but what we got is:
rule over all
rule over all

Corporate rule the no body rule
Corporate rule the no body rule

suits uber alles
The terrorist slide
The terrorist slide
The sorry, sorry State of US
The State of US
The home of the warrior slide

Juxtaposition of Leonard Cohen and Lady Gaga: hyperbole of the absurd.

“They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I’m coming now, I’m coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I’m guided by a signal in the heavens
I’m guided by this birthmark on my skin
I’m guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I’d really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you’re worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don’t have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I don’t like your fashion business mister
And I don’t like these drugs that keep you thin
I don’t like what happened to my sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I’d really like to live beside you, baby ...

And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I’m ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I am guided

Ah remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in
Well it’s Father’s Day and everybody’s wounded
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin”

We lost Berlin; apparently, first we take the Prince of Asturias award, and Oviedo “Then we take Manhattan.”

Surely there are many poets out there of greater merit than
Cohen. His stuff is fine as pop music goes; but really? More
signs of the decline of culture in the West. Stone age 2 around
the corner! Pathetic actually…

With all due respect…

I think LC is more of an entertainer than a poet.  One would expect that a top literary prize in Spain would go to some one of the league of Dante, Boccaccio, Shakespeare, Cervantes.

On the other hand, that quality seems to be absent these days.

Who will get it next year?  Lady Gaga?

I’m glad to see Leonard Cohen honored in such a way!  A
genius of verse, he’s written some of the most
insightful words about our condition as human beings.
I was inspired by his song, “Anthem,” to create a
portrait of this legendary musician.  You can read a
little about Mr. Cohen and the process of creating this
work of art on my artist’s blog at

process-leonard-cohen.html
