Lady Gaga, we presume?: The artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta gets monstrous in this still from the 2010 Grammy Awards.

How exactly does Time magazine measure influence? That exact formula, such as it exists, might be known only to Time’s editorial team, but the rest of us can still exercise our own evaluative faculties in sizing up the mag’s picks for the 2010 Time 100.  —KA

Time:

Other things haven’t changed. As always, part of the magic of the TIME 100 is the pairing of writer and subject; this year you’ll hear from Bono on humanitarian Bill Clinton, Sarah Palin on iconoclast Glenn Beck, Cyndi Lauper on pop icon Lady Gaga, Jeff Koons on the artistry of Steve Jobs, and Phil Donahue on the talk-show legend that is Oprah Winfrey. We also enlisted a few of our own writers to profile people in their fields — for example, TIME’s political columnist Joe Klein on Admiral Mike Mullen, with whom he’d recently traveled to Afghanistan.

The point I am trying to make is that Sarah Palin is a media creation. She is gunning for the spotlight, and every word she utters, or move she makes is reported like news.  That makes her movements newsworthy.  She is making money.  She is not a political figure.  Yet, the media is only to happy to assist her desire to take the headlines.

Limbaugh and Beck and Palin are hateful and encourage hatefulness.  Time magazine just gave them a strong endorsement, and the three of them get stronger standing.  It is a vicious cycle.

Kerryrose,
this isn’t just Tea Baggers - don’t forget that Sarah Palin ran with McStoopid as Vice President - She was put up by the Republican Guard. This Loose Moose was a hit in Minneapolis, so if you add the Right Wing AND the Tea Baggers together you come up with a pretty sizeable population of Ideologist wackjobs. Time is just a typical bought media singing to the choir of indoctrinated knuckledraggers that make up a huge chunk of the Red, White, and Blue. Or should I say “Moral Majority”???

Time magazine continues the trend of ‘creating’ media politicians by giving them more spotlight, and thus validating their agenda.

The Tea Party are a minority of disenfranchised republicans who have been activated by Freedom Works and Americans for Progress.  24-7 coverage by Fox and the MSM magnifies their significance.

They are angry, white, middle class Republicans who have been put to action by the media.  They have always existed, but now they are being used to propegate the right wing agenda.

Sarah Palin is the pretty face of intolerance and ignorance.

Kerryrose,
“Can someone tell me why Time would give the seal-of-approval to ‘People Who Hate and Encourage Hate’ like Beck, Palin, and Limbaugh.

Certainly these demagogues don’t influence outside of their minority sphere.  Does Time have a political agenda?  There must be many people from other cultures who are influencing the world in socially responsible ways. “

Time covers primarily US issues - so when you say the Palin, Beck, and Limbaugh don’t influence outside their minority sphere, I hope you realize that your talking about a sphere of over 300 million - the US population. Even though not everyone there is influenced by these clowns, how can you say it’s a minority that are? Americans are radicalized, and trend oriented toward Moral Conservatism - Who do you see the Times Powerbrokers trying to influence?

It is indicative of this media-creating era that someone like Hillary Clinton, who influences nations around the world, would not make the list, and a self-serving demagogue like Sarah Palin would make the list.

It is sad and telling of the shallowness of our culture.

Certainly, Gov, Palin belongs at the top of Time’s list. And did you notice Billary was left off? She is the dim past, Sarah is the bright future.

Who could argue that Palin, Limbaugh and Beck influence the lunatic fringe - who make up 30% of the country.

I am baffled how any critical thinking adult could follow three goons who create their own reality. In other words, all three they are phucking liars!
