Hollywood Democrats Wary of Super PACs

With less than eight months until Election Day, President Obama is getting trounced in the super PAC department—partly by design, as Obama only recently capitulated to this democratically challenged trend, but also because certain members of a particular class of Democratic donor aren’t too keen on giving money this way if it contributes to a larger problem. Yes, those Hollywood politicos are acting up again.  —KA

TheWrap:

Data from the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign finance, shows that of the top 50 donors to Super PACs whose identities are known, only 10 are supporting Obama and other Democrats, and just two of those come from the entertainment community – Jeffrey Katzenberg, who has kicked in $2 million, and Stephen Bing, who gave $425,000.

Bill Maher’s $1 million contribution will show up when more recent contributions are counted, along with $50,000 each from director J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen McGrath and director Lenny Mendonca.

The main Super PAC supporting President Obama, Priorities USA Action, raised a mere $4.4 million, through January.

For the perfect example of Hollywood liberal zombies look no further than Davis Guggenheim:

http://www.salon.com/2012/03/09/the_authoritarian_mind/singleton/

Excerpt:

Hollywood producer and director Davis Guggeinheim just produced a 17-minute “documentary” hailing the greatness of Barack Obama and his many historic and profound accomplishments, and it will be released this week by the Obama campaign. Please just watch this two-minute interview of Guggenheim by CNN’s Piers Morgan in which Guggenheim explains that nothing critical can or should be said of our President other than the fact that he is so Great that his Greatness cannot be sufficiently conveyed in a single film (via VastLeft); other than noting the obvious — how creepy his Leader worship is and how perfect of a guest-host he’d be for several MSNBC shows — all I can say is that this is the pure face of the Authoritarian Mind, but it is as common as it is repellent.

The Bill Maher types like to talk left but when push comes to shove they vote right (which Obama is - not unlike what Tony Blair pulled - just because Repubs are right wing, doesn’t mean nobody else is)- I always knew the Hollywood types were mostly just that - talk left, act right - hopefully it won’t fool anyone anymore. I think it’s time for another party.

Although I hate the concept of superPACs as much as anyone, there is an old and apropos saying: don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.  At this point, the toothpaste is out of the tube: if Obama does not take advantage of a superPAC, he will have far less chance of winning the election.

@ litlpeep

I like your comment alot, but I don’t believe you fully understand or appreciate the damage J.J. Abrams has done to Star Trek, it’s culture, it’s outlook, it’s philosophy, yes even it’s philosopy.

Abrams Star Trek is an utter abomination to all things not totally stupid, worthless, pathetic, irredemable, tasteless, and generally shitty in mind body and soul.

The nerve of this asshole is so incomprehensible to me. I think he is to stupid to be called evil.

He has no appreciation, not even the slightest clue as to how truly irreverent he is.

What can you do???

I don’t know of any source that has demonstrated the scientific value of mud slinging, or any other source that has shown it bringing divine redemption to anyone.  I do know that when I’ve done it, especially “successfully,” it only brought curses upon me and others.  So I don’t recommend it.

I do, however, appreciate the dilemma faced by thought donors who want to see more decency in our politics.  Why not advise them to put their money into things like the occupy movement and related activities that will boost Obama’s prospects of becoming more rather than less respectable along his preferred path to re-election?

There are thousands of such activities.  FAIR is a culture of such activities.  Chris Hedges could probably name a hundred without inhaling.  Robert Scheer could come close.  Are they offering these decent folks with money to spend on more decency some decency-delivering options?

Giving the money to a super pac only feeds super-pac cultures.  We need less of it, not more.  If Obama must have that kind of crutch to win, he needs to lose.

I advise Obama, or any candidate for that matter to have nothing to do with J.J. Abrams and his money.

Gene Roddenberry is going nuts in his grave over what Abrams has inflicted upon the Star Trek conception. This is from a credible source (as if one was needed).

J.J. Abrams is the scum of the scum. A real piece of worthless scum.
