Journalists gather around artist Ai Weiwei outside his home on Wednesday after his return from detention in Beijing.

It took two months and not-so-subtle protests from within and beyond the art world, but on Wednesday the Chinese government freed 54-year-old artist Ai Weiwei from prison, hinting at tax issues and not artistic dissent as the reason behind his stint in lockup. Authorities praised Ai’s “good attitude in confessing his crimes” as a contributing factor in his release.  —KA

Los Angeles Times:

Whereas dozens of others have been arrested over the last six months in a crackdown on activists, it was Ai — by dint of his stature in the art world — who inspired petitions and demonstrations across the world. I just got a flash cookie that was named whitehouse.gov.  I am not kidding and I am not making this up.  I was at Slate.com and cleared all the flash cookies and all the regular ones when I left. Then I came here and when I left I found it.  The folder was empty before I came here.  If you know about flash cookies, there are two folders that they go into, at least there are two that I am aware of.  One always has a copy of the same set of cookies only with a # in front of the name.  So if you get a flash cookie called democracynow.com, and yes, they do use them, you also get one in the other folder called #democracynow.com.  So either Slate is up to something extremely insidious that I have never seen happen or heard of, or Truthdig gave me the whitehouse.gov flash cookie.  Anyone here at Truthdig care to explain?

I’ll keep my avatar for a while though…
