Brooklyn Artist Tallies Troop Suicides

designboom.com

At least someone is paying attention: In this image from designboom, Sebastian Errazuriz keeps score of American military members’ suicides on a Brooklyn wall.

In this case, the writing is actually on the wall: Brooklyn-based artist Sebastian Errazuriz turned his shock over hearing that the number of U.S. troops who committed suicide in 2009 doubled the toll of Americans killed in battle into protest art on the wall of his studio. Designboom has taken note.  —KA

designboom:

errazuriz’s first instinct was to post the statistic on facebook, dumbfounded by the lack of response and interest, he bought can of black paint and decided to ‘post’ the news in the real world on his own wall outside his studio in brooklyn. equipped with a ladder, he marked a black strip for every dead soldier, until both the suicide rates and war rates occupied the entire wall and were registered as a single image.

I have a lot of empathy for the troops. I’ll never be a
fan of the how and why they were deployed the way they
were but to call the artist an opportunist for making
me think about the numbers of troop suicides (PTSD,
divorces, etc) or to even “rejoice a little more” is
really beyond the pale. I’m as against the war(s) as
anyone, but my issue has never been with the “troops.”

honest john; if your take on the piece is of a
shameless self-promoter, you have successfully avoided
the reality of this article.
the shameless self promoter is the cretinous george
bush, the simpleton who committed this country to the
fated criminal enterprise in which its troops are so
demoralized. if anything the “artist” is a tiny voice
in the maelstrom, reminding people of a telling trend.
hear it, or don’t, as it suits you.
as for forces65; i have the deepest sympathy for you.

Yeah it’s unfortunate that so many people are depressed
and committing suicide,  it is a shame.  What is even
more unfortunate is that an artist wants to try to
capitalize of this to make a name of himself… or am I
suppose to avoid that reality of this article?
