This isn’t exactly what the iPad looks like, but the hype surrounding Apple’s tablet drew similar comparisons.

After months of breathless anticipation, techies everywhere have a new gadget/cultural phenomenon on their hands in the form of Apple Inc.’s new tablet, the iPad. Apple CEO Steve Jobs was on hand to do the unveiling honors at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on Wednesday morning, and based on the results, you can bet the lines will be forming in front of Apple stores yet again.

Los Angeles Times:

Perhaps the worst kept secret since, well, the iPhone, the iPad is a 10-inch touch-screen computer. It resembles an oversized iPod Touch.

“We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a truly magical and revolutionary new product,” Jobs said early on to ease the throngs of technology journalists and analysts who knew what was coming.

One interesting thing to watch about all media is how the line between ‘commercials’ and ‘news’ blurs.

I see it all the time on the local Denver TV stations.  When some idiot from Idol said he’s quitting, the local Fox station ran it as ‘breaking news, update at 10’ all during the football game.  This of course was right before Idol premiered.

Or, if you flip by the local news, you often see ‘news stories’ where they are showing off stuff you can go buy and telling how wonderful it is.

Most local ‘sports news’ will tell you to hurry and go get your tickets now to an upcoming game.

Or of course, the entire ‘entertainment’ news industry is all about selling tickets to movies and plays and the such.

And, it seems like every time Apple introduces a new product, Truthdig puts multiple stories all about it up on their front page.  I wonder why?
