Austin Takes Music Criticism to New Depths

The city of Austin, Texas, long known for keeping it weird, decided to let the public rename the Solid Waste Services Department. The leading contender is “The Fred Durst Society of the Humanities and Arts.” Durst, the face of millennial rock band Limp Bizkit, probably won’t end up with the honor.

NPR:

Austin’s Solid Waste Services Department decided it needed a new name. Something with a bit more panache. So they put it to the people of Austin in an online vote — and so far, their overwhelming choice seems to be “The Fred Durst Society of the Humanities and Arts.”

Fred Durst is the frontman for the hard-rock band Limp Bizkit. And while folks in Austin might think their music shares much in common with solid waste, the city may have trouble following the will of the people on this one.

City of Austin public information specialist Jennifer Herber tells NPR’s Linda Wertheimer that the name will ultimately be decided by the city manager and the poll was just for “public input.”
