It looks like a $2,075 investment in a sketch by then-no-name artist and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama could really have paid off. The doodle, drawn as part of a 2007 “National Doodle Day” charity event, is now said to be worth in the six figures.

The Chicago Tribune:

This doodle by then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama sold for $2,075 last year in a charity auction. Pictured are fellow Sens. Charles Schumer (from left), Harry Reid, Dianne Feinstein and Edward Kennedy.

Barack Obama has many talents, but only the most generous of critics would include art among them. Still, this doodle by the president-elect could be worth an amount many professional artists would envy.

Memorabilia collector Wayne Berzon of Northbrook paid $2,075 for the sketch during a 2007 online auction to benefit Neurofibromatosis Inc., a charity dedicated to the genetic research of tumors that form on nerves.

Now that Obama is set to be sworn in as the nation’s 44th president in January, Berzon says an attorney tried to buy the piece this week on behalf of an unnamed client and told him it could fetch six figures on the open market.

If I’ve not thought a lot of Obama, I think even less of him now. He SIGNED this doodle thing? Oh right, proceeds went to charity. Hopefully to one that doles out proceeds to painters struggling to survive in the case of a nation that forks over less per capita on the fine arts than those in any other industrialized nation.

There is no such thing as a “professional” painter. There are only painters and those who can’t. In the case of painting, as in the case of, say, making jazz music, “professional” does not apply. Doodles SIGNED by John Lennon and Barack Obama are regarded as “artistic” output in the case of celeb-cult-driven culture.

The magic is gone.

Mr. Berzon will realize profit eventually, if not already 10 times investment. Maybe 100 times. I can well imagine $200,000, now that Obama is elected.

I expect that we’ll all shortly be learning—from Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow—of how Obama is also Rembrandt reincarnated.

Signs and wonders, signings and wonders.

Best to you lot of struggling painters who really could use the dough. Don’t count on it.

I suppose a BO finger painting should bring in at least 5 figures. Fame makes people rich for just for a lousy signature.

When I glanced at this scetch, I thought I recognised the four subjects, so I opened the article and I was correct.
Which leads to the obvious conclusion Obama has talent!

Lots of us doodle, but few can actually capture a recognisable likeness.

I’m impressed!

By the way, a shrink could really have fun with this doodle! smile

I am no artist when it comes to drawing, but I am one with the piano. Your grade scale makes a lot of sense. And Barack’s signature; it is brilliant! A work of art unto itself.

I’m an artist of many years and Obama definitely has talent. I have no idea how long he took to create these line drawing portraits, but based on the spareness, I’d guess not very long. If he were a practiced art student, I’d give him a B-. But I doubt he has much time to practice, therefore B+. I also don’t know what reference material he used, if any. If these are from memory, A-.

I doubt many past presidents could draw this well. Talent is intelligence in its various forms. Obama is clearly intelligent and talented. Let’s hope his cabinet is too. The dark side will not yield power readily.
