‘American Idol’ Will Lose Its VillainPosted on Jan 11, 2010
Simon Cowell is leaving Fox’s ratings monster to launch an American version of “X Factor,” which will allow older performers to compete with the kiddies. Cowell said “we’re hoping to find the American version of Susan Boyle,” the homely Scottish singer who exploded to international stardom with a stint on “Britain’s Got Talent,” another Cowell show. “Idol,” which is so popular it is referred to as “the Death Star” by the competition, isn’t going anywhere. But Fox will have a hell of a time finding a replacement for Cowell’s reliable negativity and meanness. We nominate Dick Cheney. —PZS

How important is pop culture! The president has rescheduled his State of the Union address to as not to interfere with the season opener of “LOST.” But when you think about it——the State of the Union and “LOST” are of the same genre——they both works of fiction!

What struck me was this. I was watching a show on Fox monday evening. And of course, the station kept running promos for its upcoming news broadcast. What was striking was that this was the story that they kept saying I should tune in at 10 to learn more about.
A ‘news’ station whose big ‘news’ story of the night was that a paid employee of the network on an entertainment show was leaving. Yep, that really has an impact on my life and it was really important that I know that…. not!
‘News’ is now just advertising for another show on the network. An announcement conveniently timed to coincide with the beginning of a new season. And Truthdig thought this bit of Fox self-promotion was news that we all needed to know?
That alone should be enough to convince any thinking person to turn off American ‘news’. You’ll actually be better informed if you just turn it off.
