Emma Thompson, Petition Tourist?Posted on Nov 10, 2009
British actor Emma Thompson has drawn the ire of Roman Polanski’s supporters by removing her name from a pro-Polanski petition she’d signed following the Polish filmmaker’s September arrest in Switzerland. On Tuesday writer-filmmaker Yann Moix, in a short article on Bernard-Henri Lévy’s Web site, La Règle du jeu, archly accused Thompson of “petition tourism.” —KA

mill said Polanski drugged and raped a girl who was a minor.
If there is anger, it should be directed at him
Maybe. But this is Truthdig. And the patron saint of Truthdig is Gore Vidal, who called the raped 13 year old a ‘hooker’. Vidal also thinks Polanski is the victim.
So get with the program, mill. Direct your anger the actress who signed a piece of paper and then changed her mind.
Its the Truthdig way.

Thompson was GREAT in the movie “Wit”
This was produced by HBO and didn’t appear in theaters. It’s very inexpensive online(or Netflix)
Don’t miss it.

This is “arts and culture”?
Very, very sad.
Well, I guess it at least get’s today’s winner as the story I could absolutely not give a flying flip about.

I was watching the NBC reality show “To Catch a Predator” some 4-5 weeks
Report thisago. You probably know the routine for the show. Some wannabe pedophile
gets into a chat line dialogue and talks to someone he believes is a 13-year-
old girl, and “the girl” (actually an adult working for the program) responds
positively to suggestions put forth by the wannabe sex fiend that they meet
somewhere. The “somewhere” turns out to be the house, wired for sound and
image, set up by the NBC TV crew. I was struck by how uniformly creepy all
those wannabe child molesters - whether middle-class or blue-collar, a rabbi
or a redneck - turned out to be. Which brings us to Roman Polanski. You may
recall his brief cameo in Chinatown, where he plays the goon who nicks the
gumshoe’s nostrils (thereafter necessitating the bandage on Nicholson’s nose).
Polanski plays a very creepy, verminous character. I realize now that the film
director had, in fact, been baring his soul. That said, all those who signed the
pro-Polanski petition might consider pitching the idea to NBC that they be
brought on board to mount an impromptu on air defense of the predators each
time one of them gets snared in NBC’s honey-trap.

WEAK , That’s what Emma Thompson is.
WEAK for not making decisions on her own and stick
with it.
WEAK for letting other people tell her what to do.
WEAK for listening to stupid teenagers who don’t
even have enough life-experience to discuss the
Roman Polanski case because it all happened long
before they were born (THURSDAY , MARCH 10 , 1977).
Is Emma Thompson intelligent ?
Her WEAKNESS proves otherwise.
Emma Thompson , do you have a low self-esteem ?
I Have a mind of my own , i do what i do , and
i’m headstrong - that’s a good thing.
You (Emma) should try it.
DON’T LET OTHER PEOPLE TELL YOU WHAT DO , BUT MAKE
YOUR OWN DECISIONS AND FOLLOW YOUR HEART.
That’s WISDOM.
The millions of people who’ve been involved in
Report thistherapy-groups KNOW that what i’ve written is TRUE.

We may not have seen the last of him on TV, but Lou Dobbs is done at CNN, having struck a deal to leave his anchor post at the cable channel immediately.

Go Emma Thompson! Good on her for listening to her conscious, instead of doing the easy thing and letting it go.

One can understand how when all your peers are jumping on the bandwagon, saying “Hey! We all gotta HELP!” and getting carried away and signing on.
But it takes a moral person to realize they’ve been had, both their peers and even by themselves and to stop and say “No!” regardless of the consequences.
Being wrong is one thing. But recognizing it and NOT correcting it is the mark of the morally bankrupt.
Happily, Emma Thompson, one of the most intelligent actors in the world, has the moral courage to realize she made a horrible mistake, own up to it, and refuse to continue that mistake.

I am almost certain I have a huge crush on her.. so my comment on this has to be taken with that in mind..
Not sure why she initially supported Polanski.. I think she did the right thing by backing away..
In any case my appreciation for her as an actress didn’t (and doesn’t) hinge on her views of Polanski.
That’s it.

Shame on her for signing it to begin with, but good on her for having the courage to remove her name…

I don’t know anything about Yann Moix except that s/he is a ridiculous person. “Petition tourist?” For retracting your name from one petition? (or better known in this case as “coming to your senses?”) Please. Methinks this Moix person is feeling a bit scared that others will rightfully follow suit.

I like her better than ever now. It takes great courage to go against the CW of one’s peers. Madame Thompson will always be on my A list.

She has my total respect. One often identifies with one’s peer group and then the conscious says ‘hey, wait a minute.’

I’ve said it before and will say it again that i am stunned that anyone is defending this animal. One can argue bias from the bench re sentencing, but there should be no argument regarding his guilt and the fact that he still needs to answer for his crimes against a child.

Imagine the audacity of Ms. Thompson to change her own mind after considering the situation and actually discussing it with others !!!
Report thisShe can never be a good politician; that’s certain. Politicians all make up their minds instantly at birth and never change their stance on ANY topic EVER. A good politician would never revise an opinion on the basis of better information - that’s just for scientists and other radical elitists.

Good for her.
Better to sleep with a clean conscience than cave in to studio pressures were Weinstein and Allen are merely attempting to protect one of their own.
