First they’ll take Hong Kong: Minnie and Mickey Mouse, shown at Disney’s Hong Kong outpost, are getting ready to head to mainland China.

In a deal two decades in the making, China is opening its doors to the Walt Disney Co., having finally given the quintessentially Western enterprise the go-ahead to bring Mickey Mouse and his fellow characters to Shanghai with a new Disney theme park tailored to the Chinese megalopolis.  —KA

The New York Times:

The initial resort, with a mix of shopping areas, hotels and a Magic Kingdom-style theme park, will sprawl across 1,000 acres of the city’s Pudong district — with the theme park occupying about 100 of those acres. It would be a little bigger than Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and on par with the parks in Paris and Tokyo. It is expected to open in five or six years.

Mickey will make eventually make succesful inroads to Chinese attitudes.  “Small World” and its hypnotic rhythm will subliminally pull away all remaining vestiges of communist leanings.  A couple of trips to the Epcot-style attractions will eventually convince the Chicoms to swap out coal for green energy sources.
And, who knows, maybe Disney & Co. will bring back some Chinese influences - anybody want a scorpion-on-a-stick while they wait in line for Pirates Of The Carribean?
