Leonard Cohen Defies Boycott to Perform in Israel

The crowd at Leonard Cohen’s Tel Aviv concert.

Leonard Cohen performed in a soccer stadium near Tel Aviv on Thursday over the objections of activists who want artists and entertainers to stay away from the Holy Land. Unlike Madonna, as The Washington Post points out, Cohen donated his earnings to Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation and managed to avoid wrapping himself in the Israeli flag.

Oh, that Madonna. —PS

Washington Post:

As he went onstage Thursday night in a 45,000-seat soccer stadium near Tel Aviv, it was amid accusations that he had betrayed his humanist and Buddhist principles. The concert was “a kind of validation” of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, said Shir Hever, an economist and activist with the Alternative Information Center, a group opposed to Israel’s policies toward Palestinians.

The proceeds of the show were intended for a Palestinian-Israeli reconciliation fund started by Cohen, but the singer also decided over the summer to balance the schedule with a smaller companion concert in the West Bank city of Ramallah. “He was mindful of the conflict” when he decided to perform here after a long absence, said manager Roger Kory. The Ramallah concert came under fire as a “pity performance” and was canceled.

I do like Cohens’ music very much.

There are alot of things that I like that I dont buy anymore, trying to make a very tiny stand for what I believe in. If we are to believe in the “marketplace’s” ability to “fix things” then everyone must follow their conscience on this one.

There appears on the horizon of every generation, a voice, at once human, that is so clear and gentle that the angels themselves weep.  Finding the conscience of such poets as Leonard in need of explanation and defense should cause some hesitancy. Never having known many Jews or Palestinians, I have had trouble developing the hatred that is required to maintain a position of bias.  I must lean on the proposition that it is not insanity that turns the world upside down, it is conscience.  To boycotte Leonard’s concert for a desert god’s lack of real estate skills some 3500 years ago, does not, at first blush cry out as rational.
Leonard Cohen is a poet, and is not to be worshipped or martyred.  He has helped himself to the plight of humans.  Humans who are not sure why they are here, but pretty sure it’s not in order to enjoy themselves.  As W.H. Orden uttered in one of his poems, ‘we are here on earth to help others… what the others are here for - I have no idea.
And finally as that great elocutionist Rodney King so famously uttered, “Can’t we all just get along.”

One of my favorite singers of all time, Leonard Cohen is a brave and most
intelligent man who has more class in his nirvana than all the activists
put together.  He has the most fantastic gravelly yet melliferous male
voice ever recorded.  I have many of his albums and now will buy even
more!  Thank you Leonard, for being such a mensch.

Well, since I dont have nay money to spend, Cohen is not going to miss it.

Here is the boycott: (Naomi Klein, Israeli boycott)

http://www.naomiklein.org/articles/2009/01/israel-boycott-divest-sanction

And here is what to boycott:

http://www.inminds.co.uk/boycott-brands.html

Laugher—most of the products caled for in the boycot involve US companies too. I say, boycott US corporations. Buy at second hand stores, if you have to buy. I shop for everything, but food and cleaning/hygiene products about onece a year. I survive. Stop shopping so much.

Will it do any good? I dunno. But, does someone have a better suggestion, like waiting for Obama “not” to cave
I guess its easy to boycott when you dont have any money, but just think what would happen if everyone stopped spending money at these places….McDonalds Starbucks, Coca-Cola—look, are these things really doing you any good? You can buy more music with the money. (from in dependent labels..lol)

He only did one track with Los Lobos, but he used the same process with many
of the songs. Simon would show up with little or no material, ask the bands he
was “collaborating” with to jam out a little, then he spliced things together and
added a vocal track and I guess that makes him a songwriter?!
I am a musician, I take it seriously, you’re right, I have no idea what you mean
by “all music is stolen.” That’s bullshit. If you mean “all music influences all
music,” yes, that’s right, but that’s not what Simon did. I’m not saying he’s the
worst, but he certainly does not have the artistic integrity Cohen and other
musicians have.

The album is musical imperialism, that’s what I really don’t like about it.
He can spice up his music with some African rhythms, and not have to actually
discuss or engage himself on the subject of Africa. I just think Paul Simon is a
pompous little fuck, sorry for going off on a tangent.

As for Cohen, I am dissapointed, but I won’t boycott the man himself, he
is brilliant and his music is beautiful. Of coure people should boycott Israel, it’s
not just what they produce, but mainly the companies that enable the
apartheid that goes on. Many of these companies are American companies that
I also don’t support. I can’t boycott everything in US obviously, but I pick and
choose where my money goes, this is what most people with a conscience try
to do.

Russian Paul
I like how loose you are with the facts.
According to what I read, the conflict was over one song.
But according to you, now its “most of the songs”

I don’t think you understood my point about how music is stolen at some level, so even if I believed Los Lobos’s very self serving version of events, I still don’t care.  To me they sound like a bunch of cry-babies who only made a fuss about writing credits after the album was a success, and the success of the album had nothing to do with the song they claim to have written.

Just like I don’t care if some guy plays a concert in Israel.  Grow up
You want to boycott their country?  Why don’t you start with the USA?  Surely if Israel is deserving of a boycott we are as well.  But then again, you live here so boycotting your own country might be tricky;  I suppose its easier to boycott a country you were never planning on going to and are not inconvenienced by avoiding their products since there aren’t many on the shelves here.

As for Los Lobos.  So they collaborated on a song and then complained
about not getting writing credits when the album became a top seller.  Even if
their side of the story is true Why should I care?

I don’t care if you care, I’m just saying for the record, Paul Simon did not write
most of those songs. He’s never denied it. He “collaborated” with artists and
then took full writing credit. And of course took advantage of the “world music”
exoticism bullshit that gets stupid white people to buy this shit music because
they stupidly believe they are supporting the indigenous peoples of wherever.

Led Zepplin stole all their songs as well, doesn’t make them bad.

Of course it does! It makes them thieves! Would you say the same about Elvis,
the biggest thief of them all?

Madonna is a Zionist whore, she is paying back all the favors Warner Brother have bestowed. I don’t like to berate peoples beliefs but her ‘adoption” of kabala and all the rest is just part of her brown nosing to stay in the limelight.
This is just one more example

Yes the boycott is silly and pointless, as they usually are.
What exactly are you boycotting?  Hebrew national hotdogs?  Manishevitz wine?  There’s really not many products to boycott.  And in case you haven’t noticed, Israel does not rely on industry for the money to expand their settlements, they are subsidized by US taxpayer money.  Their own economy is quite weak

As for Los Lobos.  So they collaborated on a song and then complained about not getting writing credits when the album became a top seller.  Even if their side of the story is true Why should I care?  Led Zepplin stole all their songs as well, doesn’t make them bad.  There are really only a dozen rhythm parts to any style of music.  Its not as if Los Lobos made an entirely original song

Lsaugher—the fact that no one knows there is a boycott on Israel is part of the problem. He couldve made it an issue, but, its true, why expect courage out of even our favoritwe musicians and and stars when all they really care about is money?

You can find Cohen on the internt, if you want to. He is Canadian. I wont be searching him again soon.

Whereas P.Simon actually produced a good album in S.Africa called
Graceland

Except he stole most of that music from other artists, including Los Lobos who he
told “sue me. See what happens.”

Yeah, I would say Cohen has a bit more integrity than that. I think it was stupid of
him to play this show though. If he canceled and released a statement, that
would’ve sent a very strong message.

His performing in the center of the den of iniquity in regard to Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians will possibly do more to highlight the issue than his not performing there.  Good move.

Every place can benefit from hearing Leonard Cohen’s songs. He is right to reject anyone who wants to pull his strings for their political agendas. He’s an artist and his own ideals and principles are all that he has to answer to. Let the people hear his music and take what they will from it. Censorship must always be condemned.

this reminds me of when Paul Simon performed in South Africa despite a boycott.  Everyone made a huge deal about it.  Except me of course, I don’t really buy into these fake outrage situations
And that boycott was actually known about, I don’t think more than 1 in 10 Americans even realize there is any kind of major boycott against Israel, you certainly are not going to hear about it on television

To be perfectly honest, I’ve heard the name Leonard Cohen but could not place him with any music I know.
I do know who Madonna is, but could care less what she does
