Klein Disowns ‘Shock’ Film

A recent squabble between “The Shock Doctrine” author Naomi Klein and the director who is adapting her book into a documentary film has led Klein to ask that her name be taken off the credits. Conflict reportedly arose over the form of the documentary, and the director’s use of narration rather than interviews as the key storytelling device.

The Guardian:

Naomi Klein has disowned Michael Winterbottom’s forthcoming screen adaptation of her bestselling book, The Shock Doctrine, by asking to be removed from the credits of the documentary after serious differences arose between her and the British director.

The Canadian journalist, activist and author of No Logo had originally been slated to narrate the film and act as a consultant.

But it is thought Klein became unhappy with Winterbottom’s take on her critique of “disaster capitalism” and western economic cynicism after seeing early cuts of the film. She is understood to have felt the documentary – which accuses the US and other countries of exploiting natural and man-made catastrophes in developing countries to push through free-market reforms from which they stand to gain – would have benefited from more interviews and less narration.

Arguing with conspiracy theorists is a futile effort, any conflicting evidence is immediately added to the overall conspiracy thus no logic can win through.

I am certain that conspiracies exist, have existed in the past and will again in the future. But as to this specific conspiracy i.e. that the Trade Towers were dynamited, or brought down with a secret weapon of unknown origin ( you know you have seen that theory) I do not subscribe.

I have read engineering reports and architects dissertations noting the unique ( and against code) way that those towers were supported to give the impression of vast space. I had eaten several dinners at Windows on the World and seen that architecture first hand. That those buildings pancaked the way they did was the direct result of the way they were constructed, and had an exemption from NYC building codes because they were built on Port Authority land.

To lump all who refuse to buy into this theory, as you do, as phobic on the subject of conspiracies in general is a very weak argument and beneath you frankly. I believe that JFK was murdered at the behest of powerful men in Washington DC. I believe that his brother , Robert, was likewise murdered, because he threatened powerful people, organised crimelords.

I believe that conspiracies happen all the time, some come to fruition , some do not. I believe, also, that the Trade Towers were brought down by the airplanes I saw fly into them…In your eyes this makes me unworthy, so be it.

“I wish I could support your passionate belief that what happened on that date was the result of a conspiracy rather than the actions of extremists of muslim origination but I cannot.”

Ardee, you are ideologically insane, although, God knows, this is in no way an isolated event.  We all are.

Those of us that have purused the 9/11 truth evidence, however, know that planning a criminal act is a conspiracy, whther the Muslims did it alone, at all, or in conjunction with the elements of the Bushite administration.  The US power system has managed to conduct a sequence of murders and mass murders over historical time and made Americans emotionally afraid to say so by calling them conspiracy theorists.  And semi-Progressives, like Chomsky and Alex Cockburn pile on with the right wing.

Purple Girl—If you read her books, you will find plenty of facts. I dont think that she is a prosecutor, though. That would probably take AG Eric Holder.

Its hard enough getting him to go after low-hanging fruit like the little guys at the CIA.

Interviews who Whom?
The Criminals themselves?
The people who aided them or turned a blind eye?
Or the Outspoken Liberals who weren’t able to convince people of the covert agenda at the time?
Frankly I’ve had enough opinions, now I want to see the step by step process which brought their disasterous policies to fruition.
Give me the timeline, the series of events, the evidence to convict finally convict them!!
What creditability does any of those ‘in the know’ have? They were either part of it,too stupid to realize it or did not, or could not, do a thing about it.
‘Opinions are like assholes everyones got one’, but when it comes to ‘fact’ there is only One.
Klein does not need opinions to prove the Shock doctrine was in play- she needs the concrete set of Facts.

Everything that has happened since 9/11….has happened since 9/11.  The things 911truthdotorg is referring to specifically were in-fact already part of “the program” long before that Day, however.  They were, of course, amplified and accelerated CONsiderably by the “event”....and its carefully stage-managed aftermath right up to this Day.

Had theamericanpeople been on the receiving-end of the five hundred years of the holocaust here on Turtle Island, instead of serving so slap-happily as part of its ‘delivery-system,’ they probably wouldn’t've been nearly so (pardon the expression) blown-away by what was actually a rather insignifacant episode in the long globe-girdling career of “civilization,” here in its dying days, anyhow.  A mere 3,000 deaths and the CONtrolled demolition of some obsolete real-estate, even in such spectacular fashion, is nothing at all to get so worked-up about.

If it was, as some maintain, a “wake-up call,” people might better’ve woken-up to the dead-end of their domestication, instead of to the “shock” of their own “government” apparatus suddenly exposed for the instrument of oppression it has always been….behind the facade of “....of by and for the people,” which it never has.

Naomi Klein’s insights are certainly revelatory….to those who haven’t been paying attention this half-millennium.  Here in Indian Country some of us holocaust survivors’ve been wondering what took you guys so long to figure it out.

Its ridiculous to discount all that Klein has done, just because she disagrees with some on 9/11.

If “9/11 Truthers” werent quite so adament and histrionic at denouncing anyone who disagrees with any part of their theory, people might be more wiling to listen. I might be.

It is not a question of agreeing with me or not.
It’s a question of the TRUTH - of what REALLY happened on 9/11. Not the convenient political cover-up “truth” - the TRUTH!

Without meaning to antagonize it seems that you mean “the truth’ as you determine it to be.
```````
9/11 is THE most important issue. Period. It is the foundation for every atrocity that has taken place since then. Two wars with no end, (three if you count Pakistan), the Constitution being decimated along with our rights, privacy, freedom to travel…and on and on.
I agree that the events of 9/11 have determined much of what has occured since, thus a reason to believe the investigations thereof were superficial may hold water. I wish I could support your passionate belief that what happened on that date was the result of a conspiracy rather than the actions of extremists of muslim origination but I cannot.
If someone of her stature would have the courage to say that, at the very least, we need a new, true 9/11 investigation, well, then maybe people might take notice.
But she, like most of the population of the USA does not support your belief, thus she will not say what you wish she would. This does not mean she lacks courage, only that she lacks your belief system…..
Naomi’s error is attempting to have the documentary the way she would like it, they way she finds informative. That is an error, the director is logically attempting to create a documentary that the majority of people will find informative and entertaining. Naomi has to bear in mind that those with out as high an intellect would find it difficult to absorb information in the same manner that she is comfortable with. The audio visual audience is significantly different to the literary audience. Do no diminish the value of the message by allowing ego to over ride understanding.
Naomi Klein refuses to even entertain the possibility that 9/11 is NOT what the “official” story says it is.
How she won’t even consider the possibility that elements in this country made the “shock” happen, boggles my mind.
I guess all she wants to do is sell books.
The only truth that we’ve been told about 9/11 is that 3,000 people were slaughtered.
Mad Loon—ditto!
liecatcher—Moore is a good filmmaker, but has not remained true to the values he espouses in them. For example,, he promised not to back any candidate who wasnt for withdrawing from both Iraq and Afghanistan , as well as for universal health care.
He got neither one in Obama but backed him anyway.
Moore seems to be too worried about being liked to do any really “in your face” docs anymore—but we will see…
The Shock Doctrine is a must read for everyone.It is one of the most important pieces of journalism of our times.
Her research is bullet proof which is why our masters have been so silent regarding this book, lest they publicize it further. Because the last thing they want is more people to read it.
I always thought of my self as socially and politically aware, however after reading The Shock Doctrine I realized that my knowledge of the manipulation of world events only scratched the surface.My only hope for this film is that it gets more people to read this very important book
In “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism” Klein argued that at the height of the 2003-07 economic boom, the military industrial complex was driving Israel’s tremendous economic growth, and Israel had the largest GDP growth of any Western country.
Klein theorized that the source of Israel’s tremendous economic growth in the past five years cannot be attributed simply to its encouragement of high tech entrepreneurship and basic science. Its success must be understood, rather, as a product of its ability to use the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank as a laboratory for defense industry innovation—and to showcase their wares.
“Young Israeli computer scientists and engineers gain their training in the military, and then go on to start the kind of technology companies that have proliferated wildly in Israel and whose products are much sought after abroad.
“The entire Israeli hi-tech sector and not just military technology per se, is thus an outgrowth of Israel’s hyper militarization.
“The Israeli economy’s tech sector grew by 20% in 2006 alone, and Israel is now the foreign country with the second most US stock exchange-listed companies.
“Klein’s point that Israel’s military-derived technologies are an economic growth-driver because they can be tested in situ is correct, but it is insufficient for describing the magnitude of the military’s tremendous penetration of the country’s economy.
“Palestinians under occupation can indeed be seen as human “guinea pigs” and not just merely military targets, as Klein claims, but the society’s militarization is far more profound than even she suggests.” [1]
After the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, Israel’s economy was devastated, but then came 9/11, and “suddenly new profit vistas opened up for any company that claimed it could spot terrorists in crowds, seal borders from attack and extract confessions from closed-mouthed prisoners.
“Many of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs are using Israel’s status as a fortressed state, surrounded by furious enemies, as a kind of twenty-four-hour-a-day showroom—a living example of how to enjoy relative safety amid constant war.
“Israel now sends $1.2 billion in “defense” products to the United States—up dramatically from $270 million in 1999…That makes Israel the fourth-largest arms dealer in the world.
“Much of this growth has been in the so-called “homeland security” sector. Before 9/11 homeland security barely existed as an industry.
“By the end of this year, Israeli exports in the sector will reach $1.2 billion—an increase of 20 percent. The key products and services are …precisely the tools and technologies Israel has used to lock in the occupied territories.
“Israel has learned to turn endless war into a brand asset, pitching its uprooting, occupation and containment of the Palestinian people as a half-century head start in the “global war on terror.
“Israel’s policy of erecting walls and checkpoints to seal off the occupied territories are also “laboratories where the terrifying tools of our security states are being field-tested Palestinians—whether living in the West Bank or what the Israeli politicians are already calling “Hamasistan”—are no longer just targets. They are guinea pigs” [2]
Although an early review of the film by the Hollywood Reporter described it as “a rough, disjointed doc that fails to get across Naomi Klein’s arguments against disaster capitalism”, Variety found it superior to many contemporary musings on the same subject.
One might guess that the author wanted the film to be true to her vision, and it seems it might not be. A not uncommon occurrence when a book becomes a movie. That’s why I generally stick to the book.
