Vatican Paper Gives ‘Angels & Demons’ a PassPosted on May 7, 2009
It wasn’t exactly “two thumbs up” material, but despite the Vatican’s vested interest in pooh-poohing certain conspiratorial notions presented in “Da Vinci Code” author Dan Brown’s oeuvre, the official paper of the Holy See didn’t quite pan director Ron Howard’s cinematic treatment of Brown’s prequel, “Angels & Demons,” either. However, L’Osservatore Romano’s review did manage to throw a couple artful backhanded compliments into the mix.

It’s difficult to say which is more repugnant: catholicism, or the growing industry of catholic-bashing that has grown around it.
One can hardly credit Dan Brown, since catholicism is such an easy target, and anything good in his books is lifted from other writers. But it’s fun to see the church wising-up on this one and not issuing edicts condemning those followers who slide into sin by partaking of the film’s purported entertainments. That would only have given the picture some free publicity.
If only audiences would wise up as well, and stop entering the theaters of christ for their weekly dose of rectitude. Then we wouldn’t need anymore Dan Browns.

Dolores: The church abhores excesses of capitalism. Really? Then why not sell off all it’s art and treasure to feed the world’s hungry? The Vatican is one of the greatest storehouses of treasure in the world. As far as having a billion members, most of them are in 3rd world countries and are illiterate. Organized religion is repugnant to me, but catholicism holds a special place in my heart. That is truly one of the world’s most screwed up religions. Off hand, I can’t think of another religion that has done so much to oppress so many. To me, it ranks right down there with islam. When I read Angels and Demons, I was kinda disappointed the vatican didn’t get blown up.

Dear Purple Girl,
Report thisAll groups of human beings fail. All human beings fail. This should not come as a revelation. You are, of course, free to slander the Catholic Church—there are many who will congratulate on you on such a popular, familiar stance—but you shouldn’t slander its 1 billion members, who are various. Nor should you discount the Church’s continued and prophetic stances against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, all nuclear weapons and any use of torture. The current and previous pope have made historic attempts to acknowledge the true presence of God in all Abrahamic faiths (as a key document of Vatican II—Lumen Gentium—does as well). The Church decries the excesses of capitalism and continues to stand—both in word and in deed—with the world’s immigrants, refugees, and poor.

After many many years of not being able to go to the movies, I found a way to see movies again. I was shown a tiny game player that played discs with movies and got one. The first movie that I saw was “The DaVinci Code”. (And that’s a good thing, since most of the movies available are for teen boys and I am neither: action, violence predominating.)
If you like movies, you’d like “The DaVinci Code” (and spouse and I had been known to go to 3 in one day. As kids, we’d sat watching a movie on Sat., kids’ prices, with cartoons, over and over. In spouse’s case, until mother came to theater calling name and “come home for supper”.)
“The DaVinci Code” is a perfect movie. I put aside the content main thesis, because I don’t care. The movie is gorgeous, plot is fairly good (theme can be ignored).
If I can, I will see the new one, although the content is less appealing, but based on how much I liked “The DaVinci Code”. I’ve seen it at least 7 times.(I fastforward the violence.)

And after 2 millenia of lies and oppression, we care what the ROMAN Catholic Church says about what?
Report thisI didn’t need the Da Vinci Code, nor will I need the new film, to enlighten me about the Sins of the Vatican- merely being raised Cathloic and the ability to read made that Truth Undeniable. In fact I recovered decades ago from their braiwahing indoctrination.
Let’s See oh ‘Holy’ See, how much blood has stained your hands since your Romans tortured and murdered a man of Peace on the Cross, the image you kiss and worship? How many more Jews were sacrificed to cover up your own sins? How many Mary Magadelens did you bear false witness against over the millenia? How many other pages of history have you burned literally?
I’m 46 and I was taught straight up as a child, the Jews killed Christ. The Church has always claimed poor Pilot was a victim of circumstance, beholden to Herods andthe Rabbis wishes.Don’t tell me after nearly 2,000 yrs they’ve suddenly come clean with the fact cruxifician was the Romans Beloved form of punishment.Any wonder old Ratz re instated the Holocaust deniers?History has proven if the Popes lips are moving He’s lying or attempting to seize the Divine’s right to judgement,AGAIN.
As for the sociopaths like Hagee and his legion of followers, they are no better- their envy and jealosy towards the Vatican is not only revealed in their actions and rhetoric, but freudian slip of the word ‘GREAT’ Whore.Sounds like the ugly green head of that mortal sin talking,Hagee.
