He’s not biting off bats’ heads at the moment, but Ozzy Osbourne has once again managed to stir up controversy, even in his autumn years. The flap this time is over “The Osbournes: Reloaded,” his new Fox TV variety show co-starring other members of his clan, which an affiliate in Panama City, Fla., has deemed unfit for viewing.

Rolling Stone:

The Fox affiliate in Panama City, WPGX Fox 28, has opted not to air the show, claiming the program is “unsuitable and contrary to the public interest,” the city’s News Herald reports.

“This is more of an MTV thing,” WPGX general manager Jeff Cavileer told the News Herald. “They are reporting it to be a variety show. There is worse stuff than this out there. This show in my market does not serve my public in Panama City. I did not feel it was appropriate.” Cavileer added that the Osbournes show would follow American Idol, a series that attracts a lot of young viewers (and we’d add also features a difficult-to-understand star — cough, Paula).

Russian——It is obvious you haven’t read many of my
post on these sites.  I worked as a School Psychologist.  I’ve seen what fast food has done to
people, especially children.  I have advocated
mandatory Child Development and Family Relations
courses to teach people not only how fast food and
other food choices are harmful to humans but to teach them also the media strategies the fast food
industry uses to manipulate their choices.  In the
Bible God says, “people perish because of a lack of
understanding.”  It’s hard to teach understanding to
people when most of the media is owned by a hand full of corporations who care more about the bottom
line than the health of people.  You are absolutely
wrong in making the assertion that a person has the
right to ingest whatever they want.  What if they are ingesting something that is tearing their families apart.  THAT’S WHAT I MEANT ABOUT YOU NOT
LIVING ON EARTH BY YOURSELF.  I assume, like the rest of us, you have people who love you and don’t
want to see you destroying yourself along with
them.  Did you watch “Intervention” tonight from
8-10p.m. on A & E.  If you did you know how injesting drugs was not only destroying the people
but also the people around them that love them.  I’m
sorry.  Someone must wiser than myself said, “No man/woman is an island.”  Wake up and look around
at the people being destroyed by what they put in
their bodies.

How Christian of you - ignore the valid points I raise and reduce the argument to personal attacks. Go on make another marijuana joke and show your ignorance.
I know I’m not the only one on this planet, that is why I don’t selfishly impose my views on everyone like you do, I think parents and non-parents should have the FREEDOM of CHOICE to put what they want in their bodies. It doesn’t concern you that our drinking water, our children’s toys, our food is all filled with poison, but if you ingest the “wrong” poison, the government can throw you in prison and take away your liberties? You are okay with that double standard? You are okay with Mcdonalds killing millions every year and turning our kids into large, porcine, diabetes-sufferers? Doctors prescribing amphetimines and antideppresants to our kids stronger than anything you would find on the street, that’s also okay? But some folk choosing to “get high” from an innocuous plant, this is what you think would make Jesus angry?

Truthdig has not reported the OIC resolution to limit free speech at the UN because that story does not further Truthdig’s worldview, which is that the problems in the world arise from American conservatism, capitalism and Christianity.

If an American Christian organization or a Republican person or a capitalist proposed to limit free speech it would be reported daily. Every development would be under a magnifying glass. And rightfully so. Yes, rightfully so.

But if any event exhonerates or disproves such activity, it is ignored.

Truthdig(under Gore Vidal’s inspiration) is preoccupied with the hunt for “fascism” among American conservatives. Loves to call American Christians “fascists”. Gore Vidal took the plunge when he called a conservative person a “Nazi” on national TV fifty years ago, and his ilk are committed to fortifying that idea at all costs.

It would make Truthdig’s attacks on Christians look quite petty if they were to report what was going on at the UN. Or at least Truthdig would have to use much more severe language for what the OIC is doing. Except there really isnt more severe language than what Truthdig uses on Christians. But even if there was, how could Truthdig attack another culture so mercilessly? After all, the Left is multicultural. It simply cannot be done.

When there is an glimmer of awareness on Truthdig(such as the concern for the plight of Afghan women) that finally bubbles to the surface, it cannot be discussed intelligently because the lead article writer and the bloggers have very limited knowledge of the basis of the problem. And oh my, thats a painful blog to read, with bloggers blaming the plight of the Afghan women on US policy, on the Midle Ages, on poverty,... etc etc.

To put it another way, the problem cannot be named. That is where Truthdig is at.

Now we do need our liberal blogs. We do need the criticism from the left. It is just completely blinkered on some improtant subjects and it weakens the whole enterprise.

So when a one local TV station owner doesnt want to broadcast Ozzy’s show… Truthdig jumps on that. As if free speech is under attack! And if the owner could be proven to be a Christian or a Republican they certainly would have worked that angle too.

Is that you Tipper Gore? Parents should do their job to avoid negative influence and stay out of other people’s lives. What you seem to advocate is family-first -fascism where all art must be child-safe. As for your derogatory druggie comments - it’s the government maintaining control over what can and can’t be put in your body that should be upsetting you. Alcohol, tobacco, and the fast food industry kills HUNDREDS of MILLIONS more than all the illegal drugs added up, just look at the numbers.

In reference to Freedom of Speech, it is illegal to
yell “Fire” in a movie theatre.  One day, when people
better understand what influences the attitudes and
behaviors of people, especially children, it will also be illegal to get by with a lot of behavior that
presently exists under the guise of “Freedom of Speech.”  In reference to the drugs, sex and rock and
roll culture try to watch some episodes of the TV
program “Intervention.”  I believe the next episodes
will be on A & E next Monday from 8-10 p.m.  By the
way, I don’t believe “religion” will have anything
to do with the misery you will observe individuals
and families undergoing.  We have lost a whole
generation to your drugs, sex, and rock and roll
subculture of pathetic individuals.  In fact, many
of that generation are now running the world as
politicians.  Think there might be a correlation?

I like the “Old Uncle” comparison, very good.

Christian - So free speech should only be allowed if one is speaking something “significant” or “positive?” Are you hearing youself? Let me explain something - in rock and roll, the devil does not represent satan, but FREEDOM. Drugs, sex, and rock and roll all part of a subculture of freedom that any despotic government wishes to shut down. And they do it with the guise of religion.

Let me also explain that I am no fan of Ozzy, not because he is a “bad influence on our children,” but because he is a pathetic, overrated, Elvis-Presly figure who wrote very little of his own music. Now GG Allin, THAT is a man who you want to keep your kids away from. For pete’s sake, Ozzy is like the drunk grandfather at every reunion, he’s harmless.

Typical Truthdig. The UN has been threatening to limit freedom of speech, but Truthdig never has reported anything about it. No, instead they decide the main free speech issue is Ozzy getting his show aired in one town in Florida. The political Left in this country doesnt know who its friends are.

A typical truthdigger said this:

Thanks for visiting, and be sure to say hello to all the other fascists at home.

I suppose the temptation to play the fascism card is just too great. Hopefully the truthdigger didnt mean it. But one never knows. The propaganda on the Left is pretty intoxicating.

The Free Speech law was to protect people who voice
opinions concerning issues confronting our society.
For example, the opinions you read here on Truthdig.
Where else will you find these opinions?  Our thoughts, speech, and behavior have an influence on
others.  That influence can be positive or negative.
I can’t find ANYTHING positive about Ozzy Osbourne.  He obiviously puts on his act to make MONEY.  He and those like him have corrupted millions of people in
the name of free speech.  If he had something significant to say about world conditions I would
define his right to say so but just to act and speak the trash he does is vulgar, distasteful, and harmful to young people, especially those whose minds are altered by some substance.

Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have.”
—Richard Salent, Former President CBS News.

“News is what someone wants to suppress. Everything else is advertising”.
former NBC news President Rubin Frank

Asked to give a toast before the prestigious New York Press Club in 1880, John Swinton, the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times, made this candid confession [it’s worth noting that Swinton was called “The Dean of His Profession” by other newsmen, who admired him greatly]:

” There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, as an
independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you
who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know
beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for
keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others
of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who
would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the
    streets looking for another job.

If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper,
before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of
the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to
vilify; to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell the country for his
daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting
an independent press. We are the tools and vassals of the rich men
behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and
we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the
property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. “

Sheeple please, the media is and has been controlled for a very long time.

Tim - the problem is NOT that the show was not aired; you’re correct there are many VALID reasons why a show should or can’t be aired. but here, the show was not aired b/c the station GM decided it was not worthy of showing. leaving free speech to the whim of a TV station manager is a slipperly slope to censorship. if he had a VALID reason, such as monetary constraints, time constraints, etc., this would not be an issue. but because he based his decision based on the CONTENT of the show, he exceeded his ability to regulate the time, place and manner of speech. while it is arguable whether or not this is state action, TV stations exist and are allowed to air only by the grace of the gov’t and the FCC, and thus gov’t compliance/inaction in his censorship should amount to gov’t action.

Johnathan,

So if I film an enormous pile of crap for 30 minutes, and send it to my local TV station for airing, it’s a violation of my right to free speech? Are you serious?

None of you are grasping my meaning. I agree about free speech, and as I keep saying, I fail to see how this is a free speech issue. Obscenity is and should be protected.

It is woefully ignorant, however, to think there can be no filters on information - forget about the law, it’s a simple physical impossibility.

Programs get canceled and rejected all the time for various reasons - most tragically because they do not make enough money.

Tim it is Vulgarity, Obscenity, Stupidity, Violence and Idiocy that Free speech PROTECTS!!

The reason we have free speech is so that those “vises” as you would call them are able to be spoken, written, read, viewed and loudly proclaimed by whoever wants to, even though people like you do not want them to be.

I bet you think censorship is the right way to go!

Let me give you a quick hint, its not ever in the best interest of a free society to limit speech in any way. Yes a lot of junk gets said, but so does a lot of good productive criticisms.

Anyone who is properly educated knows the difference between the two. Maybe if conservatives had invested in education instead of trying to legislate morality for the last thirty years we would actually be a well educated republic.

If you don’t want to live in a free society you can always immigrate to some theocracy in the middle east or dictatorship in Asia where there is no free speech or human rights or even better for some people with the same views as you woman’s rights.
