Sean Penn Schools Prop. 8 Supporters in Oscar Speech

Sean Penn holds the Oscar for best actor, which he won for his work in “Milk.” The 81st Academy Awards presentation was held Sunday in Los Angeles.

Lest he miss an opportunity to speak his mind, Sunday night’s Best Actor Oscar winner took a moment on the podium to encourage those who voted last November for California’s Proposition 8, the anti-gay-marriage initiative, to rethink their choice. Turns out the Academy is actually made up of commie, homo-loving sons of guns.

Transcript of the speech from Oscar.com:

Thank you. Thank you. You commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns. I did not expect this, but I, and I want it to be very clear, that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often. But I am touched by the appreciation and I hoped for it enough that I did want to scribble down, so I had the names in case you were commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns, and so I want to thank my best friend, Sata Matsuzawa. My circle of long-time support, Mara, Brian, Barry and Bob. The great Cleve Jones. Our wonderful writer, Lance Black. Producers Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks.

And particularly, as all, as actors know, our director either has the patience, talent and restraint to grant us a voice or they don’t, and it goes from the beginning of the meeting, through the cutting room. And there is no finer hands to be in than Gus Van Sant. And finally, for those, two last finallies, for those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone. And there are, and there are, these last two things. I’m very, very proud to live in a country that is willing to elect an elegant man president and a country who, for all its toughness, creates courageous artists. And this is in great due respect to all the nominees, but courageous artists, who despite a sensitivity that sometimes has brought enormous challenge, Mickey Rourke rises again and he is my brother. Thank you all very much.

AP via Los Angeles Times:

“You commie, homo-loving sons of guns,” Penn began in accepting the prize. “I did not expect this and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often.”

In this highly competitive category, Penn was up against Mickey Rourke in “The Wrestler,” Frank Langella in “Frost/Nixon,” Brad Pitt in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and Richard Jenkins in “The Visitor.”

Penn had already won the Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice awards as well as numerous honors from film critics groups across the country. The 48-year-old actor deeply immersed himself for the part, which brought out a warmth and sweetness we’d rarely seen throughout a career often marked by intense, complex characters.

“How did he do it?” fellow Oscar winner Robert De Niro wondered in introducing Penn. “How for so many years did he get all those jobs playing straight men?”

KDelphi,

Well, with that at least I can say your acting your age. Good luck in demonizing the religious.

Well KDelphi,

And your likely a teenager still living at home with mommy. How’s it feel to finally be able to swear freely? New experience for you?

If I were you, I wouldn’t engage in debate. You don’t have the capacity, intelligence, or know-how. The fact you responded with “I am not going to waste my time on your entire post” demonstrates you simply can’t respond.

Perhaps you should ask yourself why you need to demonize religious people.

As for your comment about my spelling, I wouldn’t go there if I were you. Your posts weren’t exactly dripping with perfection.

Good luck going through puberty though.

“People can disagree as to whether Jefferson’s papers were suggestive of a strict wall of separation.”

Thanks for the permission. Yes, I can disagree cause I actually read the letter, and I actually studied the facts. The letter was to a concerned group of Baptists, to comfort them and let them know that a wall separated the GOVERNMENT from interfering with religion and would not attempt to create a Church of America.

“Dont presume to tell me what to study, when you went so far out of your way to REGISTER here just to bitch about gay marriage! Do you think about it alot? Really? Late at night?”

No. I am expressing my opinion. Another component of America and its political design. I can presume whatever I want, especially when I see someone like you talking about things you obviously know little about outside what your Atheist preachers have taught to you say.

“I can assure you that Bullshit, is a mild term. I dont know what you want, an apology??”

No, I just think people should act more mature and quit trying to sound like a punk teenager.

“YOu just keep saying “childish” “immature”—what are you 80 yrs old?”

No, just someone who appreciates intelligence, not foulmouthed emotional children looking for attention.

“but, I do care about others religions being imposed on my society.”

But you can certainly oppose your religion, right? Atheism has become a religion, like it or not.

“If YOU have a right to a “religion” or a “god”, then people certainly have a right to choose whom to love and marry.”

That doesn’t even make sense.

“If most agreed with you, the country wouldve elected McCain and some GOP. They didnt. I am not a Pres. Obama fan, either.”

First, he isn’t president. He stole the presidency by lying about his citizenship. Second, It wasn’t some grand landslide. So there are others who didn’t agree with Obama. Lastly, McCain is a liberal, no matter what clothes he tries to put on. He threatened to become Democrat a few times.

“As I have said you are on the wrong side of history,”

Uh, yeah, sure.. What does that even mean? Do you make things up as you go?

“and, if you dont like it, move to Austria.”

Ok, if you don’t like Prop 8, move to France. It passed. Grow up.

“You guys like that economy, right? (although when I was in Austria, I didnt see alot of diff from Switzerland—they both just have alot of money, which we do not, thanks to conservatives)”

Uh, Obama was key to suggesting Fanny Mae and the like take high risk loans. The Liberals don’t have clean hands.

“I have no idea what Teachers Unions has to do with religious groups.”

The Mormon Church took a position on gay marriage. A Church ends up being a union of like-minded citizens.

The Teacher’s Union took a position on gay marriage. A Union is a collection of like-minded citizens.

The point is that the Mormon Church or any other Church has a goal of instilling morality into the followers. The California Teacher’s Union doesn’t. It’s just a labor union.

Bottom line is the Churches all got binged for voicing their opinions, but a labor union which has NOTHING to do with marriage law didn’t.

Follow the bouncing ball now, slick?

I thought we were talking about Penn’s comments on it…except that you think unions are equivalent to religious organizations?? I dont get it.

You must be a so-called Hamiltonian Republican , right? Or are you a Paulette? People can disagree as to whether Jefferson’s papers were suggestive of a strict wall of separation. If you want an American Taliban, move to Georgia, (the state—-or the country…)if youre not alreaedy there.

KDelphi,

An adult audience isn’t the same as a 18 year old audience excited about being able to use swear words, freely. Mature adults, who have grown a vocabulary can make complete sentences without teenage style language.

That being said, no one is talking about sending homosexuals off into some prison or island. As I said, many who supported Prop 8 also support civil unions as a compromise. Marriage is a RELIGIOUS institution that has a meaning and purpose.

Also, there is nothing unconstitutional about the Bible. Learn a bit more about the First Amendment. It doesn’t prohibit religious ideas from influencing government decisions. It protects the free exercise of Religion by prohibiting a STATE RUN RELIGION. We were avoiding a Church of England.

It is the protection of religion, not the inoculation from it.

Otherwise, any like-minded people should be prohibited from enforcing or protesting ideas. What did the California Teacher’s Association have to do with Prop 8?? It’s a labor union!!! But they can have a say while a union of religious folks can’t?

Your half baked ideologies and emotional outbursts are childish. Do you think Sean Penn made anyone on the right suddenly side with him? I certainly laughed at his “shame” speech. It was childish and emotion based. There was no logical thinking whatsoever.

jskains—I had no idea you were so virginal.(I should have…)I was under the impression that i was speaking to an adult audience. Surely you have heard the term bullshit….if you dont like it, stick to “family values” sites. Also, dont watch
“Hollywood” awards shows etc. “Milk” was a true story—not some “hollywood” fantasy.I dont listen to Rush—-but, I dont think he should be off the air. But, just try to find other talk radio.

It is your opinion qhat the natural state is a man and a woman leading to procreation in most cases.
It is not mine, and I will work to change it.

YOu guys are on the wrong side of history. YOu can hang around so-called liberal blogs and join hate groups if you wish, but, gay people are not going anywhere, and you had better get used to it.

On what do you base your view that the natural order is the situation you must prefer? If it is the Bible,(or any holy book) it is unconstitutional.

(I registered so I could respond better)

Well, KDelphi

Mature adults don’t need all that foul language to communicate. It shows your level of maturity.

A civil matter isn’t my business? That’s funny. We are a democracy. We as the people define law. When someone demands a re-definition of marriage, we the people get a say on that re-definition. Marriage is designed to create traditional familes of a male and female to create children. Civil Unions were created to handle non-traditional unions that didn’t fit the definition of marriage.

This is the same thing as demanding a woman be called “father” and then demanding that society accept that new definition. Father is used to express the male component in a family. If someone wanted to re-define that so that government has to recognize that new definition, we as a society have the right to be involved.

Marriage is not a right. The constitution does not say that all people must have access to marriage. The privilege of the state recognizing that marriage for taxing and other benefits is definable. And at current the definition is a male and female marrying to benefit the human natural design eventually leading to procreation in most instances.

“This kind of childish propaganda by people like Sean Penn and Tom Hanks does need to stop. Many Prop 8 supporters simply didn’t believe in redefining marriage and what it meant. Many Prop 8 folks fully support civil unions and feel that is the appropriate venue for same-sex couples to legally bind themselves in the eyes of the law.”

What bullshit.

HOw kind and giving of conservatives to support civil unions! Nice of you to throw people a bone… I dont see that it is any of your business , either way.

If you want to enforce law according to a certain religion, maybe it should be Muslim law. Or , make it Catholic and make divorce and adultary illegAL.

The truth is, is is a civil matter, and, none of your business. California may have gotten hoodwinked this time, but, the hate cannot continue. Other states will continue to legalize gay marriage. Dont worry, they dont want to use your church.

“Hollywood” generally speaks up when politicians dont have the balls to see that the rest of the civlized world is moving on.They have as much right to speak on social and political issues as you do. They just have a bigger platforn. If you dont like it, dont watch. There is your FREEDOM.

What “conservative” movies would you have nominated? The talking lion as “god” one?? The “left behind” series? Conservatives dont have a creative bone in their bodies,,,that is why they have their own special bookstores and “family” video—-so you guys can deny reality.

Have fun.

I just wanted to make a brief comment to the person that said that conservatives are against gay marriage but ok with civil unions.

That is a flat out lie. Most states that ban gay marriage also ban civil unions.

Most social conservatives get into just as big a tizzy over civil unions as they do gay marriage.

Social conservatives are not for civil unionrs nor gay marriage.

They want to stop both.

Propaganda like what Sean Penn spewed actually only makes things worse. Shame on people who stood up for their beliefs and voted? No, shame on those who want to sidestep democracy and use the courts to overturn the will of the people.

Like I said, the labeling has to stop. The propaganda has to stop, and celebrities need to learn they aren’t the best political folks “speaking for the people” in their ivory towers.

The moral majority is a hate group that never seems to disappear. The only way it can be combated is by the hiring of tens of thousands of fair minded employees by the Justice Department. Their job would be to dig deep and wide to find those that deny minorities their civil rights. It must be made a capital crime and major violators should be swiftly hanged in front of shopping malls.

~~~
Oh my melpol, you DO have the solution. I could use a job, and would be honored to be among tens of thousands of fair minded JD employees. (there are few currently in existence after 8 years of you know who.) The ones who are ENTRUSTED with upholding and protecting the civil rights of citizens, (such as the EEOC in Texas)have been flagrantly obstructing such efforts on behalf of Corporations highjacked by the religious right.
Anyway, I wouldn’t mind seeing any of these criminals hung at the shopping mall. I probably wouldn’t volunteer for that part of the project, (I’m kind squeamish about stuff like that) but I’d still like to see them all rounded up and displayed long enough to let everyone else know that hate just ain’t the way.
PC folks claim their objection is to the ‘definition’ of marriage. My response is “definition of WHO’S marriage?” One should only be concerned about the ‘definition’ of their OWN marriages.
Always remember:
Facts have a liberal bias, and conservatives by and large aren’t members of the reality-based community.
“Guns, god and gays” pretty much sums up their world view. Oh, and the unfettered worship of money.
As for people “spouting,” I think Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, Thompson, Keyes, Coulter, Medved, Prager and the rest of the unhinged conservative brigade do a fine job of it.
The Academy Awards have always been a liberal PC kind of group.  If proposition 8 had not passed, then Mickey Rourke, rightly so, would have received the Oscar.  And if the attacks in Mumbai had not occurred then probably the “Reader” or “Benjamin Button” would have received the award.  Interesting how world events shape skew opinions!
