Mumbai Movies: Too Soon?

The New York Times

The events at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai are already being story-boarded.

The death and destruction from last month’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai are still fresh in the minds of many, but filmmakers in India nevertheless are rushing to retell the events cinematically, with over 20 Mumbai-themed movies already awaiting approval.

The BBC:

“Taj Terror”, “Taj to Oberoi”, “48 hours at Taj”, “Operation Five Star Mumbai”, “26/11- Mumbai under Terror”, “Shootout at Oberoi” and “Operation Cyclone”.

These might seem like newspaper headlines of the recent Mumbai attacks but they are in fact some of the 20 titles waiting for approval for possible movies based on the events of last month.

To some, the rush to register the titles seems like appalling bad taste coming so soon after so many funerals.

“It always happens. People jump on every tragedy. It is like ambulance chasing,” says well-known documentary film-maker Anand Patwardhan.

India Cinema has a rich history of making movies about attacks on India.

For a movie about a previous terror attack on Mumbai view:
“Black Friday”

For a movie about the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad see:
“Shootout at Lokhandwala”

Both are available from Netflix.

It is appalling. To what purpose do you make a movie of this? It is only to pet morbid cravings for the dramatic, while reducing the loss of life to entertainment expediency, and consenting to terrorism as a threat and instrument of fear, by way of acknowledgment. Terrorists do no deserve to be movie stars. The people trying to acquire these titles should be banned from the entertainment industry.

As we say in Hollywood——that’s Show Biz!——or is that Bollywood?
