David Strathairn, left, and Paul Giamatti (currently cornering the market on the American political period piece) bring back the Lincoln-Douglas debates in “The Rivalry.”

Just in time for Election Day, actors David Strathairn and Paul Giamatti are resurrecting the formidable historical figures of Abraham Lincoln and his rival for the Senate in 1858, Stephen A. This performance captivated me.
Both and Christian Kauffman and the actor playing Douglas was compelling and convincing. The two of them held us spell bound with soft intervals of commentary by Douglas wife, Adele. We were all transported by the dramatization of these debates. Out of this world fabulous!

This is one of those rare occasions when I have to admit feeling fortunate to be a Comcast subscriber!  Here is San Francisco they allocate some of their channels to FM stations, and KPFA is one of them.  That means I program my Comcast DVR to record it.  Corwin is one of those writers whose words need to be deliberated seriously, so it will be nice to have a copy that I can listen to a couple of times and even use rewind-replay to focus of specific passages!

Also, those interested in doing some interesting background reading before listening to the performance would do well to check out James Oakes review of two Lincoln-Douglas books in the October 23 issue of THE NEW YORK REVIEW.
