Powell Busts a Move

Posted on Oct 15, 2008
Powell Gets Down

Powell gets down with Olu Maintain, left, and Kanye West.

Former Secretary of State and current dance sensation Colin Powell graced the stage of a London hip-hop concert “in celebration of African culture.” The song he sang and danced to? A Nigerian hit about people spending money gleaned from U.S. Internet scam victims.

Powell probably was unaware that the song was about fraud.

He spoke about his own black identity in the U.S.: “It took a lot of people struggling to bring me to this point in history. I didn’t just drop out of the sky, people came from my continent in chains.”

The BBC:

America’s former top diplomat took centre stage along with Nigerian performer Olu Maintain, who sang his hit Yahoozee.

It is not clear if Mr Powell was aware that the song was about Nigeria’s notorious internet fraudsters.

The song tells of an easy-money lifestyle of women, cars and alcohol.

The scammers, known as “yahoo yahoo boys” make money by advance fee fraud, known as “419” after the legal statute that outlaws it.

apparently powell was on a stage in hanoi dressed as a woman dancing with a coconut bikini top duing vietnam. big joke. 1.5 million innocent vietnamese dead, 58K americans. america’s shame.

if he was so honorable, why didn’t he resign on the spot when he found out the truth of what he did at the UN? instead he stayed on until the end of his term..

If Powell was duped into a war, so was Clinton but a mandate was there, the only thing is Bush wanted to go to war, whatever the execuse.

His reason to go to war as that as a war president, Chaney and company could try to change this country into a Dictatorship where all money flowed to the top.

It may be that the struggling middle class might still struggle a wile longer.  But the tax break for the people making over $200,000.00 could be scaled back and used for the purpose of pulling this country out of a large recession that will border into a depression.

Powell will not change his party, only vote for the person best able to lead this country and I suppose that a lot of Republicians will change for this election, and I suppose some Dems will go to the other side.

All in all people make mistakes but by naming Obama Powell has redeemed himself.

Powell has endorsed BHO.  And not only did he endorse him, but he slammed McCain for his campaign of character assassination , his choice of VP, and his age.  However, Powell remains a Republican——and this gives BHO a chance to cross party lines when he appoints Powell to a cabinet or a national security position.

For those moderate Republicans this endorsement is all they need to moralize their vote for BHO.  As we say in tennis——game, set, match for Obama!!!

Most people who read widely and well KNEW that everything Colin Powell said was a LIE - maybe not HIS lie, but someone’s lie - and if HE couldn’t figure it out, more’s the shame for him.

But he’s been a coverup guy since Vietnam!

And My Lai (or my lie) he should have known.

Mill writes

“That’s my best shot at defending his rep, my belief. Ain’t much, eh?”

Actually Mill, I’d say it’s plenty, and enough. I agree with your assessment, including the fact that I too (at least at the time) wished that he would have resigned, (or never signed on to that admin to begin with).

But more importantly, I believe that your insight into the understandings of the secrets that were being kept within that admin is spot on, and explains a huge part of what happened to Powell, and why.

My 84 year old dad says it more simply, “The bastards tricked him.”

This kind of political infighting and backstabbing isn’t new, and if we actually wanted to make some comparisons, we could find many. That gets to be complicated. But it should be remebered that there was a brief time BEFORE the actual launching of the Iraq War, that Powell WAS figuring out (at least to a degree) what was going on, or at least that there was a hidden agenda being manipulated by Cheney and his staff. At that time, he DID threaten to resign, and the PR and damage control machine went into immediate mode, and fixed it up, printing retractions in major media.

Now it could have been that crucial time when Powell basically made a deal with the devil. He did later make it clear however that he would NOT be a part of any new Bush administration if he was re-elected for another term.

not surprised that truthdig readers find my faith in Powell pretty naive -  nah, even i won’t fall for the nigerian scams ... not yet anyway wink

why do i pretend to defend him?  because the Bush Admin not only kept secrets from the American people, they kept from each other - I don’t believe the State Dept knew how much Cheney, CIA chiefs, and others were lying about the so-called evidence

i’d rather Powell have resigned from the Bush Admin (or never accepted a post in the first place) than help advance their fraud - having participated, his reputation is never to recover.

but he was wise back in Gulf War I .... when he worked for a relatively more honest Bush as President - i suspect he was naive about the mendacity of the Cheney’s of the world.

That’s my best shot at defending his rep, my belief. Ain’t much, eh?

According to the Diane Rehm Show Politico has reported Colin Powell will endorse Obama on Meet The Press this Sunday.

Well floydw…it’s about damn time!!! Now he just might manage to redeem himself -if only slightly- in the eyes of many.

Now I don’t normally watch Meet the Press. (Stopped some years back, because Timmy was NEVER able to redeem himself in my eyes). BUT..if Powell in gonna do this endorsement on that show, I will watch it and welcome him back into the fold.

In all fairness, he’s probably suffered as much as many over his very, very, poor judgement. It doesn’t surprise me that he would do this, because I’ve been listening to his former top aide, (Larry Wilkerson) for the past few years, and Larry has been PISSED at what he’s called the high-jacking of his Republican Party, and he won’t shut up about it. Not only that, he’s been calling NAMES too..Cheney, Condi, Rumsfeld, Moron, Cheney, Addington, MORON, Cheney, Rice, you get the point. He’s actually been a delight to hear from, though they’ve been trying to shut him up. It hasn’t worked. Every time they think they’ve ‘contained’ him, he pops back up. Won’t cut the criminals any slack.

Not so long ago Powell himself was involved with a scam - on a much larger scale.

Oh come on Mill, Powell as secretary of State certainly had enough information in front of him to see the lies precluding Cheney & his sock puppet’s conspiracy to invade Iraq to grab control of their oil. He is as complacent as the rest of the admin. at that time. I suppose its appropriate that he would be dancing to a celebratory tune about defrauding citizens of the US, after all, thats what he did when he lied to the united nations trying to convince the world of our intentions. He belongs on trial as a war criminal along with Cheney, Bush, Rummy, Rice, Wolfowitz, Libby and Addington. We all were lied to, lots of people have died because of this, so many billions of our nation’s wealth squandered away, our nations reputation terrible damaged thruout the world. And theres Powell, still unwilling to accept his role in this fiasco.

Colon Bowel is an absolute fraud. This is the man who was in charge of the Mai Lai massacre coverup.
He earned his stripes a long time ago, another liar trying to make himself over for the crowd. These guys always have a past and birds of a feather….. well you know. A liar and a shill still, no amount of ammonia will clean the stench off of this piece of garbage.

No Mill,

Powel intentionally lied to the Unired Nations with those videos of “WMD” sites in Iraq. He was complicit in the death of thousands of American soldiers and the murder of millions of poor Iraqis. Iraq’s wealth and sovereignty is now, thanks to him and the bush gang in the hands of international rapacious financial elites.

Don’t know about Mr. Powell’s dancing prowess, but i believe him to be a man of good faith and good will, even knowing his role in the Bush Admin fiasco in Iraq.  His own boss, and the VP both lied to him.

A good man, coopted by evil people around him. Tsk
