Rock the Vote: Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Bouchard shares the stage with Kid Rock, right, during a November 2006 campaign rally at the Royal Oak Music Theater in Royal Oak, Mich.
Bombastic rap-rocker Kid Rock recently hit out at fellow celebrities for using their star power to endorse political candidates. However, it seems Mr. Rock himself was counted among President George W. Bush’s stable of celebrity supporters during Bush II’s re-election campaign but was subsequently uninvited to perform at the president’s 2005 inaugural festivities because his lyrics didn’t resonate with GOP family values.
Here’s some background on Kid Rock’s reported involvement with George W. Bush’s campaign efforts and his more recent statements about celebrity endorsements:
On Aug. 5, 2004, Bush’s campaign media director, Mark McKinnon, was quoted in a New York Times article as disparaging R.E.M, Bruce Springsteen, Jurassic 5, Bright Eyes and other musical acts for throwing in with the “Vote for Change” tour, sponsored by MoveOn.org, while mentioning Kid Rock as one of Bush’s own celebrity backers:
The New York Times:
Mark McKinnon, the media director for the Bush campaign, said, “We think it’s unfortunate these particular fine musicians have decided to affiliate with a hate-filled fringe group like MoveOn.’’ Republicans have complained about a video briefly posted on MoveOn’s Web site in December likening Mr. Bush to Hitler.
Mr. McKinnon added that Mr. Bush had drawn his own support from the entertainment world, citing stars like Lee Ann Womack, Kid Rock and Jessica Simpson.
Kid Rock was initially slated to appear at a youth-oriented event during President Bush’s second inaugural celebration, also reported by The New York Times on Jan. 3, 2005:
The New York Times:
Kelsey Grammer will be the M.C. at a kickoff inaugural gala honoring the military, the rap artist Kid Rock will perform at an inaugural youth concert and President Bush’s most reliable fund-raisers have so far collected $15 million for three days of meticulously planned parties to celebrate his second swearing-in.
[...] The Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, will be hosts of the youth concert, where the teenage singer JoJo will appear along with Kid Rock. The Kid, as he is called, notably said at a party during the Republican National Convention that if he were president he would never get caught having sex in the Oval Office but would instead install cameras in the Lincoln Bedroom.
Kid Rock’s stage act apparently didn’t score points with Republican organizers, as The New York Times noted on Jan. 19, 2005 :
The New York Times:
The president’s daughter Barbara helped plan the concert, and she and her sister, Jenna, were in the audience. Early reports that Kid Rock, the rapper, would be on the bill had started an uproar from upholders of family values. But Kid Rock, who has called himself the “pimp of the nation,” would have been startlingly out of place at such a determinedly wholesome show.
Here’s an excerpt from Fox News regular Michelle Malkin’s blog about Kid Rock on Jan. 7, 2005:
MichelleMalkin.com:
Many social conservative groups have launched a protest against the White House inauguration committee’s decision to invite Kid Rock to perform Jan. 18 at the Washington, D.C., Armory in a concert hosted by Bush daughters Jenna and Barbara.
Among those who are lobbying the committee to drop Kid Rock from the entertainment line-up:
The American Family Association
Campaign for Children and Families
Concerned Women For America
I applaud them. Some “South Park conservative-” types are ridiculing the protesters. “Lighten up,” they say. But I’m with the family groups on this. The inaugural celebrations should highlight the best the GOP has to offer. A guy who, as World Net Daily points out, “dedicated his first album to songs about oral sex and who was voted the Sluttiest Male Celebrity at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards” and who titles songs “F—U Blind” and “F—Off” doesn’t belong there, even if he is a rare celebrity Bush supporter.
Kid Rock was dropped from Bush’s 2005 inaugural roster. However, he still found a way to figure into the 2008 presidential campaign ... by criticizing stars’ endorsements of politicians:
During his visit to CMT’s offices earlier this week, Kid Rock offered his opinions on a variety of topics, including the concept of keeping his thoughts to himself when it comes to politics.
“I truly believe that people like myself, who are in a position of entertainers in the limelight, should keep their mouth shut on politics,” he noted. “Because at the end of the day, let me tell you what I’m good at: I’m good at writing songs and singing. What I’m not educated in is the field of political science. And so for me to be sharing my views and influencing people of who I think they should be voting for ... I think would be very irresponsible on my part. So I’ll just keep my mouth shut on that.”
He further suggests that political candidates might be better off to avoid close connections to those in the entertainment business.
“I think celebrity endorsements hurt politicians,” he said. “Because as soon as somebody comes out for a politician, especially in Hollywood, when they all go, ‘I’m voting for this guy!’—I go, ‘That’s not who I’m voting for!’ ... As soon as Oprah Winfrey pops up and goes ‘Ha-la-la-la-la,’ I’m like, ‘I love Barrack Obama. I hate Oprah Winfrey.’ ” He adds, “I don’t hate her. I just don’t believe in her, so I don’t want any part of any of that. I think celebrities hurt politicians.”
Kid Rock was saluted as “a patriot” on the Aug. 28, 2008, episode of Fox News pundit’s Bill O’Reilly’s “O’Reilly Factor” show for just these kinds of sentiments:
The O’Reilly Factor on FoxNews.com:
Pinheads & Patriots
The pop star Kid Rock seems to be a man who knows his limitations.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
KID ROCK, SINGER: Let me tell you what I’m good at. I’m good at writing songs and singing. What I’m not educated in is the field of political science. As soon as someone comes out for a politician, especially in Hollywood, and says, “I’m voting for this guy, I’m voting for this guy,” that’s who I’m not voting for.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
For bringing a little common sense to the celebrity political arena, Kid Rock is a patriot.
But wait! Wasn’t that Kid Rock who was slated to perform on Aug. 4, 2008, at the Sturgis Rally at Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, S.D.—an event also attended by GOP presidential nominee John McCain?
The Huffington Post:
The town of Sturgis, South Dakota will witness, on Monday, the rare fusion of drunken debauchery, public stripteasing, motorcycle rallying, a live performance by Kid Rock, and—last but not least—a veterans-themed speech by presidential candidate John McCain. Seriously.
On Sunday, the McCain campaign announced that the Senator will participate in the Sturgis Rally 2008 at Buffalo Chip in South Dakota, an annual tribute to American veterans. The event is up the Arizona Republican’s wheelhouse, attracting thousands of active duty and former servicemen, many who have a natural affinity towards the Senator.

Why do celebrities think the rest of us are too stupid to make decisions without their enlightened guidance. Who do they think they are? Do they honestly believe they are so divine that we would be unable to function without their advice? Are they able to defend their choices. Not likely, in fact, they are either following the controlling “Hollywood Regime” or supporting those who restrict their lives the least- “Sure, drugs are ok. Of course, you can marry someone of the same sex. Go ahead and murder unborn babies. While you’re at it have sex with your cat and set some old people on fire. Have fun!” Those people don’t live in the real world, they answer to no one, and they certaintly don’t know anything about living an average life. so don’t tell me what you belive and what works in your twisted world. I think I’ll stick to reality!

I’ve always considered this moronic, talentless hack who calls himself “Kid Rock” to be regrettable for many reasons, not least of which is the fact that our cultural iconographers have thrust him upon us with no merit on his part. Perhaps I’m being a bit sentimental, but I always thought a musician should be able to either write or sing songs. Nevertheless, I’ve been able to let my feelings for him slide, until now. Went to see a movie (an unusual treat, normally, given these economic times). And yes, there was this idiotic, mindless, flag-waving and laughably false pro-military commercial at the beginning, shoved right in my face. Goebbels’ own pro-Nazi propoganda was not so heavy-handed or tactless. Images of smiling Middle Eastern children running into the protecting arms of their gentle U.S. occupiers? Give me a break! I’m not nine years old, so keep your insulting fairy tales. I couldn’t watch it all, it was such utter nonsense! What I did see were intermingling images of Kid Rock, Nascar racing, and imperialist war - perhaps the three most pointless exercises in U.S. nationalism.
Having no other genuine claim to fame (for instance, a shred of original musical ability), this individual has openly presented himself as a whore of the empire, and a supporter of George W. Bush. He should be judged accordingly, as should anyone who defends Kid Rock himself.

sharon mcwilliams, wow are you an idiot. sorry for the bluntness, but anyone who thinks this buffoon is one of the most succesful musicians of our time deserves that title. he is most prominent example, however, of how the the marketing machine that is the music industry can make something out of a nothing. why would anyone listen to anything this goofball has to say? he’s not even an afterthought.
My point about bigotry etc.. wsn’t so much directed at Kid Rock himself, but rather at all these “young hip Republicans” who don’t seem to be very Republican when it comes to family values and small government.
Further, one can be a bigot against other people than blacks.

the point is not whether or not you like Kid Rock. The point is the celebrities should not feel they need or should endorse any political figure. their job is to entertain, not stand on a soap box and declare who the think should be president. the young voters and those others that thrive on hollywood lifesyles and follow what Paris Hilton does look up to these celebrities and think “I love Matt Damon, since he thinks Palin is bad, then I’m going with that cuz he’s hot and blah blah blah”
One should vote for who THEY PERSONALLY feel/think is the right one for the country, who seems to follow their views. Not who their idol thinks should be. Like Oprah. She love Obama. Fine. Keep it to yourself. Don’t try to sway all of your sheep.
Now, I’d like to ask…the views that it seems Obama has are quite Communistic, Socialistic. He would have NEVER made it to this position if this were the late 40s and 50s…because he and all of you who love him would be accused of being Commies and would be persecuted and prosecuted. It is not good for Gov’t to be big. It is not good for Gov’t to control your life. That is not what the founding fathers of this country wanted. They would die right out if they saw the direction this country has been in and continues to head. Remember the USSR…socialist. Did it work? No. The more gov’t we have, the LESS freedom we have. I enjoy my freedom. I don’t want the gov’t to tell me where I can and can’t smoke, what type of TV I have to buy, what dr I have to go to, what car I have to drive, what college I have to send my child to. I don’t want it to censor my words, or anyone elses. Free speech…hello??? Obama and other leftists have stated in ways, that they want talk radio off, they they will censor books, etc. WHAT? We have the freedom to turn the station, to not buy that book. FREEDOM. MY CHOICE. Not the gov’t choice for me.
I think it’s coming to a time where we who love our country and our constitution - that people died for…need to take up our arms and declare a revolution.
In the movie BikerBoyz, Kid Rock rides a Harley wearing a “stormtrooper” helmet—the crappy motorcycle helmet styled to look like a WWII nazi helmet. There was no reason for that character to wear one. When I see guys with those I want to run them off the road, and I’ve been riding more than 30 years.
That helmet is a symbol of hate and bigotry, not just the symbol of being “bad”. I see a lot of them wearing swastikas as well. Then someone tries to tell me THAT is not a symbol of racism and bigotry as well!
Haven’t you ever noticed that Republican comedians aren’t funny, except for Ben Stein? Republican musicians are either “country” or lousy musicians.
And lots of really dumb athletes are Republicans…think of Sen. Jim Bunning of Kentucky, former no-hit pitcher and the dumbest person in the Senate.
It may not have been a trailer park that he grew up in (though that is the persona he promotes), but it was still downriver. For most Detroiters, downriver is trailer park…even if it’s a mansion.

Next has a lot of raw talent not made up by a machine and is one of the most sucessful artist of our time. He doesn’t need all that marketing bullshit to make it in the business.
As for his marriage to Pam he was in love but unfortunately love and marriage don’t always work out I bet a lot of you have some skeltons in your closet about that area that if we knew would be more sensational t and what does that have to do with his political views?
Also, he did not grow up in a trailer park his dad was a car salesman and he had a nice up bringing however, unlike some of you here he choose to explore different walks of life. Which has helped him to be a more open minded individual than most of you seem to be.

Kid Rock to me represents this new vile type of Republican: the Republican who’s just a Republican out of spite/arrogance/bigotry.
Like many of today’s college “Young Republicans”, Kid Rock neither believs in morality/family values (obviously not, his marriage ceremony to Pamela Anderson proves that), nor in limited government.
So why be a Republican if you don’t believe in these two traditional bed-rock Republican stances? SImple, either he/they think it’s “cool” and “daring” to be a Republican, and/or he/they have deep bigotry inside them (against non-whites, gays, Muslims, whatever), and/or he/they are a complete moron.
This guy is the GOP’s idea of a rock star, which speaks volumes about the GOP. I own an enormous music collection and play several instruments, but don’t think I could stand 30 minutes of listening live to this talentless pretender and won’t buy any of his recorded music though I have 5000 albums and CDs. I actually think an asshole like Kid Rock criticizing artists who want a change justs helps boost and validate their message.

because he grew up in a trailer park gives him more insight to how this country works and how hard it is to make it, he does not forget where he came from…like MOST HOLLYWOOD ‘celebrities’...who live in million dollar mansions, have no worries what-so-ever about how to get to work when gas is so expensive, how to feed the family cause food is so expensive…you really think Hollywood has middle class, regular American families on their concern list?? Do you think they understand what it’s like to be middle-class or poor?? So because, ahem, Lindsey Lohan dislikes Palin she should speak up?? Why?? She’s a train-wreck. She’s been a millionaire since she was a tween, think she understands middle-class? come on people. THINK.

Funny, you’re trying to make a point but you failed miserably. Not one article quotes Kid as supporting either candidate. If you actually did any research I would be willing to bet Kid was scheduled to perform at the 2008 Sturgis Rally long before it was announced that Senator McCain would stop in Sturgis. Instead of trying to blast Kid Rock, who does keep his political affiliation to himself, try to write about something that would actually be useful. Why don’t you mention how many times Kid has gone overseas to entertain the troops? How many times have these other loud mouthed celebrities done something to give back? If you don’t like his music that’s your right but if you’re going to bash someone pick someone who is worth bashing. Kid Rock has proved himself to be a selfless proud American.

because he grew up in a trailer park gives him more insight to how this country works and how hard it is to make it, he does not forget where he came from…like MOST HOLLYWOOD ‘celebrities’...who live in million dollar mansions, have no worries what-so-ever about how to get to work when gas is so expensive, how to feed the family cause food is so expensive…you really think Hollywood has middle class, regular American families on their concern list?? Do you think they understand what it’s like to be middle-class or poor?? So because, ahem, Lindsey Lohan dislikes Palin she should speak up?? Why?? She’s a train-wreck. She’s been a millionaire since she was a tween, think she understands middle-class? come on people. THINK.

When did anything regarding Kid Rock become relevant? He is just another MotorCity moron.

As a GOP supporter, KR has every right to be as untruthful and hypocritical as the rest of the gang.

Kid, you’ve always been a low rate talent and I can see the numerous reasons aside from you lack of musical skills. Man, you are just too s-tupid, stay out of the national light and focus on the trailer parks…
