The Literary Mr. PhelpsPosted on Aug 22, 2008
If you want to read a personal account of Michael Phelps’ training philosophy, you’ll have to wait until December, when the Olympic swimming champion’s “Built to Succeed” hits store shelves. As much as we value the written word around here, is it really necessary for every celebrity to pen a memoir? There are trees at stake, after all.

Phelps does not really need to write a book, he can just make it about 300 pages of pictures. I’d sure buy a couple for me and a few for my friends.

The book is supposed to be about his “training philosophy”, but the title,“Built to Succeed”, hints that it’s not much of a strategy.
“Step one: be born with the perfect body structure for your sport…”?

Phelps and his mom seem to be genuinely nice people. I’m happy for any good that comes to them, including lucrative book deals.

Yes, please, save the trees. That damn thing is going to haunt library book sales for at least a generation. There will be tens of thousands of first printing/first editions in perfect condition floating around for ever and ever.
