Movie Mogul Weinstein Reportedly Pressured PelosiPosted on May 9, 2008
Studio honcho Harvey Weinstein is a force to be reckoned with—it was no coincidence that Disney subsidiary Miramax became a major player in the film industry under his watch—and recently he reportedly attempted to use his powers of persuasion to convince House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to follow his plan for a Democratic primary revote in Florida and Michigan ... or else. CNN.com: In a heated phone call with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi late last month, Hillary Clinton supporter Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut off campaign money to congressional Democrats unless Pelosi embraced a new plan by the movie mogul to finance a revote of the Democratic presidential primaries in Florida and Michigan, according to three officials who were briefed on the contents of the conversation. The three officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the private phone conversation, said Weinstein, a top supporter of Clinton’s presidential campaign, appeared determined to buy Clinton more time in her battle against Sen. Barack Obama by pushing for the revote and pressing Pelosi to back off her previous comments that superdelegates should support the candidate who’s leading in pledged delegates in early June. TAGS:

Well I have a Jewish father and a Scotts-Irish mother. Somehow it did not work out so well for me. You see my father insisted on keeping the weekly household allowance to a fixed amount for the whole 17 years of marriage.
When the divorce mercifully came through, the alimony was fixed at the same weekly amount. Anyway if you want a picture of my father watch the movie The Shining. Once in a while I get a burning hot rage where I want to torture him to death. But that would be like getting angry at a medusa man of war, or spitting cobra or a nematode that feeds on brain tissue. He was more like a force of nature like Hitler or Dick Cheney or the Clintons.
Anyway, you’ve made this blanket statement about Jews being more compassionate, and more equitable than the rest of the world. Finally, when it comes to mean there is no mean like Jewish mean. At least the Mafia stops at women and small children. Your mileage may vary.

The Democratic party of today is the party of our founding fathers. It is the party that, most clearly, supports freedom and the Constutition; rule by law and not by men; clean environment; always acting justly and fairly with the very highest standards and all of the countless things that make us great as a nation. The party of today falls short in purity and really needs a overhaul too I’d argue, but it is by far and away more truly American than the phony, godless, mass murdering fascism the Republicans have decided to become.
One thing the Democratic party cannot allow itself to do is punish an entire state, let alone two entire states by disallowing their basic right of voting. Not one person should be punished in this way. This would be a horrid abomination. Even worse than the animalistic borderline psychopathic chants and rants that Hillary Clinton must leave her campaigns efforts to win.
The clowns think this media that has constantly supported Bush and his mass murdering campaign in Iraq is suddenly gone decent good and loving liberal? How ridiculous. They have a massive plan and will use every effort imaginable and some not so imaginable to insure their defense industrial complex stooge gets the all too powerful job as president of our great nation. They will go on and continue looting our treasury and murder more of our soldiers and the innocents of Iraq and other countries.
Really if all those trying to twist Clinton’s words regarding the history of election campaigns truly represent the inside core of Obama’s pending administration I would not at all support Obama. They are mindless and savage. I can only hope the polished posturing of Obama reflects his true passions of fighting for the USA as one of our greatest presidents and perhaps he has told himself that the end justifies the means. I don’t agree, I think it is both foolish and evil.
As events have turned we can’t do better than the two of them to merge together, united powers, embracing each other as human beings and embracing the Constitution and our last hopes as we go on to fight the trolls of darkness.

What exactly are Nazi tactics? Are Palestinians being sent to gas chambers or worked as slave labor in mines? Are they kept in concentration camps and forced to sleep in bunkers? Have Israeli politicians made lampshades out of the skin of tortured Palestinians? Are the Israelis doing sick medical experiments on Palestinian children? Thats an extremely loaded word. Israel is a state under constant threat. Imagine how the USA reacted to 9/11, minimize the population size by a degree of about 50 and multiply that times 60 years. Chomsky is intelligent and has a lot of integrity, but he is an idealist who expects states to act in unrealistic ways. The role of any nation is to first protect its citizens. Israel should certainly move entirely out of the settlements, but if land-grabbing is Nazism, than Nazis have ruled humanity since the dawn of domestic farming.

Jason-m,
While I might agree with most of your points. I have to take issue with the thrust of your argument. One can be a “jew hater’ and still be correct about what is happening in Israel and about disproportionate Jewish influence here in the US. You seem to be operating under the cognitive bias that once someone’s motives are exposed, then it’s perfectly ok to dismiss their argument.
This solves nothing, comes off as arrogant and condescending, and, in this context, may create more of your “jew-haters”. You’ve characterized your comment is a “rant”, but I would rather see someone as articulate as yourself let your arguments stand or fall on their own merits.

It appears dihey that you are totally in the tank for Mrs. Clinton. Barack Obama did not even have his name on the Michigan primary ballot, neither did Dennis Kucinich. The disqualification of the elections in Michigan and Florida was made by the Democratic Party, not the candidates. The fact that Mrs. Clinton allowed her name to remain on the ballot, when the others, following the party rules, withdrew, reveals the duplicitous nature of the Clinton campaign.
Report thisAs far as the Jewishness of Mr. Weinstein is concerned, it is not his religious persuasion that matters, but his political persuasion, that is Zionism (you know, the God gave this land to Me stuff) which has put the United States, with its unquestioning support of that policy, as a target for so much scorn and hatred throughout the world.
The Hollywood power elite keeps nearly all questioning of this insane foreign policy suppressed. Of course this also invites anti-semitic rants from some who blame the Jews for all of the world’s problems. But that is just Father Coughlin, church of the little flower, hate speech.
The continuing support of Zionist policy is a threat to the people of the United States and Israel.

Until now I have voted Democratic in every election. I do not need to know anything about Mr. Weinstein’s phone call to Nancy Pelosi to understand that the Democratic Party has become 100% dysfunctional. If the delegates from Michigan and Florida will not be allowed to vote at the convention for the presidential nominee of the party on the basis of the will of the Democratic voters in their states: 1 the Democratic nominee will become deservedly ridiculed by history as the ‘48-state candidate’ and 2 the Democratic voters in Michigan and Florida will become screwed by the DNC and, until today, the intransigent Obama campaign. If there would be another primary in the two states during June or July Obama is likely to be trounced by Clinton by 30 to 40 percentage points as he was in West Virginia. He knows it and is therefore opposed. The stupidity of the DNC is that it never offered to assist financially (the states of Michigan and Florida do not financially/materially assist Republican and Democratic primaries on two different dates, which was the problem in Florida to begin with)in early 2008 for new primaries after it had punished the bosses of the two states but arrogantly continued to repeat the shop-worn mantra “rules are rules”. Incidentally that is exactly what Obama still spouts today but insists himself, hypocritically, on a rule change before and not at the convention as to how many delegates are needed for a therefore dubious ‘win’. There is a lot of hot air in his campaign about “change which you can believe”. The most pressing change needed is actually the manner in which the Democratic Party elects its nominee: 1. caucuses must be abolished because they discriminate against voters who must attend to a job at the time of the meetings, 2. super-delegates must be abolished because they are prone to brown-nosing for goodies before and after their candidate wins (Richardson!!!!). Where are you on this, Obama? Nowhere. You should stop hectoring McCain and put the spotlight on your own dumb party for a while. Finally I do not comprehend what the vile smears of Mr. Weinstein’s alleged Jewishness have to do with the issue at hand. Could someone of this ilk please explain?

The causes of the Iraq war are complex, although war for oil fit my rant. However, McCain himself added support to the oil part in his recent statement. But also, see Rumsfeld’s argument that after 9/11 we should attack Iraq because there were no good targets in Afghanistan. It is true many of the neocons are Jews and I agree that the issue of whether actions to protect Israel are also in the US interests is debatable. I believe some, not all, are. My beef is about how the talk about Weinstein for some here, not all, boiled down to being about Jews.
I also think that rational-sounding arguments about US interests may cover Jew-hating.

Religion is not even the point for me. Religion is people talking to the invisible, whomever they address that to. No the real difficulty is the United States giving money to the country of Israel. I object to this, the same as I object to giving money to Egypt, or any other. You see there is no referendum in our so-called democratic system for the citizens to decide how that money is spent, or who it is alloted to. As an American citizen I object to this, because that is truly taxation without representation.
Report thisWhen Senator Obama says as comander-in-chief it is his job to keep us safe, I object to this, because that is not the President’s job. The President’s job is to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. We have the second amendment to protect ourselves.
So whatever the religious ethnicity of some big shot, using their connections to loot the national treasury, I object as an American citizen. The United States government owes billions to China, yet they still give money to Israel. This has to stop.
By Jason_M, May 12, 2008 at 2:41 pm #
Same old, same old. “The truly religious jews abhor Israel” Care to back that one up? Your “jewist” invention is the same old anti-semitism reformulated to sound ratioal: “old testament days, absent god” “cult” “war-mongering” “murderer.” You include Weinstein in this group. Guild by association at the very least. Anti-semitism, jew-hating at worst.
Again, I didn’t say what I thought about Israel or its government, just that it is a fact. Your use of theocracy concerns me, too. I don’t like priests running states, here, or in Israel.
Safe haven. They try sometimes for people they want to protect. Boo to that.
“European-derived jews”? Israel’s second biggest divide (first is jew/arab) is between European background and north african, middle easterners where there is racial and cultural discrimination.

“Were better educated, more successful, more compassionate and socially concerned (look at charitable giving; look at civil rights), better parents, and better looking than you”.
More arrogant, racist and conceited too it seems.
Always the victim, never the perp. Jews are most charitable, compassionate and socially concerned when dealing with other jews. They have been one of the most discrimminatory people in the history of the planet and remain so. Hell, they have their own democracy (theocracy) for european derived jews, where offending jews from other countries can seek refuge safe from extradition.
I don’t speak about jews as a religion for the truely religious jews abhor Israel and the government which resides there, I talk about the jewists, a cult of war mongering manipulators who long for the old testament days, absent god, sort of like this Weinstein guy. I wonder if he knew Abramoff, (the rabbi-arms salesmen-lobbiest-murderer.) They fit in the same mold.

Of course this is a rant, dummy. Quoting Noam Chomsky doesn’t change the fact that you and others are doing the conflating. Saying Nazi and stormtroopers says it all about your “argument.” If you noticed, I do not support Israel unconditionally and I said nothing about what I actually believe about Israel’s behavior. Also, the “jew, jew, jew” is a reference to Lenny Bruce’s “nigger, nigger, nigger” in the 60s which he did to try to reduce the power of the word. But you wouldn’t know that, would you?

I’m tired of pretending what you Jew-haters say isn’t true. We’re better educated, more successful, more compassionate and socially concerned (look at charitable giving; look at civil rights), better parents, and better looking than you. Of course you’re jealous and envious and that, by the way, is one of the ways right wingers deflect you from thinking about and voting your real interests. Encourage your ignorant us/them thinking so you won’t look for yourselves at the way things are.
The Iraq War for Israel? For oil, dummy! For ideological/theological dreams! For empire. To show up Daddy.
Israel was created de facto and then de jure by the UN, recognized by the US. There’s plenty of injustice on both sides to go around. It is a state and behaves like a state. Many of us want Israel to be “better,” but it exists. If you want to talk about this reality and the many others in this tragic situation, fine.
But tying “zionism” whatever you mean by that to Harvey Weinstein (does he even know any Hebrew?) is, well, ignorant. Also ugly.
As for Weinstein’s threats, etc: This is America, folks, or did you forget? Money has always talked; now, it shouts and threatens. We value money/success. And so what? Weinstein is crude and hamhanded; old money is more sophisticated and does not show itself this way, but you don’t think that for example the Republican admin isn’t doing what money wants? Oil money, for instance. The Saudis. No Jews there, sorry.
And the Obama campaign has figured out that you can play the money game with small donors—so rather stewing in resentment and hatred, they are quietly changing the terms of the game.
Or do some of you think that Obama is a Muslim who is going to take the oath on the Koran?
As many a rabbi and scholar and parent has said, “Go study.”

Isn’t it remarkable that Gore Vidal’s writings about the sycophant relationship between Washington and Hollywood turns about to be totally true. A swamp of avarice which fuels the AIPAC iron curtain surrounding the truth on Israeli policy, also shows its bare knuckles when former President Carter met with HAMAS.

Oddly, Moore’s movie was more informative than any truth that oozed out of the 911 commission…..And the whole world has seen bush on that morning reading “My Pet Goat” as the attacks raged. My point is that HW has had a BIG roll in framing 911 in the American consciousness..911 the Neocon’s gambit was the opening move for endgame of the Neo World Order. Mr. Weinstein’s ego has obviously progressed to that point. And soon he’ll learn that while his money is good, he’d better keep his strong-arming on the set.
