 Rome’s New Mayor Strikes American Celebs From VIP ListPosted on May 5, 2008
Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney and Nicole Kidman are now personae non gratae in Rome, according to the Italian capital’s new mayor, Gianni Alemanno, a former fascist who thinks American stars shouldn’t be hyped at Rome’s annual film festival at the expense of Italian actors and directors.

Nationalism
Like France where all the print and almost all the radio must be in French, from universities to TV guide.
We need a dose of it here at home, not in Iraq.

A former fascist is a politician who now mixes in a little liberalism in order to attract votes. It’s like adding sweet soda to any kind of hard liquor so the kids will like it. The comparison is not far of because the youth vote turned out quite heavy in his support.
Their is some interesting reading on the Italian Social Movement Party, or National Alliance Party. In many respects it is a hybrid, or blend of left-right. They even label themselves at times the New Left and New Right. They claim not to be anti-semite, racist, or xenophobic. Yet they are rabid anti-communist (left overs from the old Fascists days?).
In this particular case I really think the guy wants Italian cinema to re-live its glory days. “Come Back Little Felini”.
In short, much ado about not much at all.

Thanks for the explanation. I really was curious, and this makes some sense to me. (especially on the New Left and the New Right)It reminds me a bit of the mix that supports Ron Paul, even though I don’t think the Ron Paul supporters are fully informed about his agenda. NOT because they aren’t as informed as they can be, based on what has been presented, but the real Ron Paul agenda has never made it to the forefront, so there’s only the propaganda that they have to go by...including his own.

Well Tom Doff, I was about to ask the same question, except that my question was assuming a fascist to be what a fascist is, and they are never ‘former’.
My question was going to be.."Why in hell did the Italians elect a fascist to be their mayor? (or at least the Italians in Rome)
I don’t get that at all. Doesn’t sound very Italian to me. But then, what do I know.
Why did he chop down all of the lamp posts? (or did he). Precaution against what? Am I taking you too literally?
Just curious. I never heard of this guy, and I haven’t been keeping up with politics in Italy lately. (actually, not for a long time)
The film on Mussolini’s mistress sounds interesting though. I never knew they were hung upside down after they were shot.
