Abercrombie Ad Rankles Va. Beach Cops

Too sexy for his pants: Here’s the offending Abercrombie & Fitch ad that sparked the Virginia Beach controversy.

Teen-targeting retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has long pushed the erotic envelope when it comes to its saucy ads, usually depicting proto-Adonises stripped to the waist and gamboling together, with a scantily clad female or two thrown in for good measure. The company’s latest campaign, though, was clearly too much for the (fashion) police of Virginia Beach, Va.

The Virginian-Pilot:

Police, saying they were responding to citizen complaints, carted away two large promotional photographs from the Abercrombie & Fitch store in Lynnhaven Mall on Saturday and cited the manager on obscenity charges.

Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman, said the seizure and the issuance of the summons came only after store management had not heeded warnings to remove the images.

The citation was issued under City Code Section 22.31, Bernstein said, which makes it a crime to display “obscene materials in a business that is open to juveniles.” He did not say what was being done with the pictures and when the manager, whose name was not released, is scheduled to appear in court.

In regards to the previous comments concerning this issue...yes, nearly nude photos at the local A&F;definitely does not deserve to be on top of the list of the nation’s priorities. However, the argument itself constitutes a valuable example of the government’s unconstitutional restriction on an important fundamental right every U.S. Citizen holds- the freedom of expression protected by the First Amendment. The government is in court almost daily fighting newspapers and other publications over whether or not they have the right to show photographs of soldiers coming home from war in caskets, photos of riots, and the like for fear of “irreparable harm to the nation.” Luckily for us, the government really has no power to enjoin these publications or impose prior restraint because as U.S. citizens our speech and expression is protected (even if that expression is just for the purposes of selling sex and low-rise jeans). From this perspective, we must respect the fact that whether it is in the public’s best interest or not, everyone has the right to display photographs that may offend people. America was founded upon the premise of free speech and expression, and what kind of tyrannical nation would we be if we restricted every form of art, music, speech or action that “offended someone.” And let’s face it, prevailing community standards are exactly what these photos depict. Try telling teenagers walking down the street that they have to change their clothes because it’s just offensive to the public. We can all thank TMZ and OK Magazine for allowing those images to prevail, but in the meantime, people have to understand that shooting the local government down for trying to revoke the rights guaranteed to all citizens is one small, but important battle in the endless war over free speech.

I guess you didn’t look too hard. How about looking for the ordinances that DIDN’T make it illegal to beat your wife or to lynch your local residents (depending on the hue of their skin)and then you can speak of freedom. And sorry to tell you, but breaking local decency laws here in America also got people castrated and hung.

This is News????????????

I am impressed once again by the TruthDig editorial reich’s choice of another event of urgent attention .

This story is much more important than the THOUSANDS of consumers defrauded at the hands of Wachovia Bank .
This story is much more important than the weekly increases in the cost of living for the American Middle and lower classes .

This story is much more important than the high crime rate among American Soldiers returning from Iraq and Afganistan , along with the alrming number of homeless Veterans and the huge rate of DIVORCES among families with one or both spouses serving in the military today .

Post-Katrina New Orleans ; ditto
Rising jobless numbers ; ditto
Debt to China ; ditto
Health Care crisis ; ditto
Epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes ; ditto
Environmental Meltdown ; ditto
Social Security ; ditto
It seems that the only obscenity involved here is the lack of BALLS by Scheer and Co. to take on any real issues or any big players involved .

Who decides which books, music cd’s, movies, ad’s etc, are obscene?

Every generation hears complaints from previous generations on their clothing styles.

Remember Elvis? Then remember McCarthyism..

The people spending all their time running around looking for ad’s and such to complain about could better spend time with their children; Go teach your children the values you want them to have, not sitting them in front of a t.v., computer, or dropping them off at a mall.

Try something new, like ;spending quality time with your kids every night.’ You will be at home, you won’t see objectionable ad’s, your kids won’t see them, and you might benifit from sitting around the table with a home cooked meal.

Guess that’s to easy. Better to threaten lives “such as the Dixie Chicks, for their opinion of Bush and this war,” Taking women’s jobs away from them, such as three bridge players whom spoke out against Bush.”

If you can’t see that you are taking away our freedom by calling the police and threatening the lives of those who disagree with you, this country is in worse shape than we know.

If you don’t like a product’s ad, don’t buy it. If enough people agree with you the product will not have a market and therefore go away.

Oh grow up!

Oh geeze… what’s more wholesome than a bunch of healthy country boys going skinny-dipping?  This sounds like some anal retentive bureaucrat with a gun run amok.  I just hope the store manager isn’t tarred as some kind of “sex criminal.”

The majority of the young people in this country want to be “gamers”,"gangsta’s",baseball, basketball, football or rap stars....There are not many who want to get an education and the necessary training/discipline in order to become Doctors or Scientists....That is to much WORK for AMERICAN kids....Be a singer-lose your kids-go to rehab-show your “COOTCHIE” on T.V. news-That is what is important to most of our youth....And the PARENTS ARE NO LONGER IN GHARGE....Your teenager will SUE YOU and WIN if you say ANYTHING.Those are the LAWS on the books.Isn’t anyone else ASHAMED of what AMERICA now stands for in the eyes of the world?????

The majority of the young people in this

What do you live in an Alabama Trailer park?

The boys and girls here in Maine work damn hard and then leave the state because there is very little work left which pays the bills. Thanks to NAFTA, WTO, GATT, and the treasonous people in government (over the last 30 years) The textile Mills are gone, the shoe shops are gone, and the forest products industry is leaving.  We had a Bank Holding company which hired 1000 workers, but NBNA was purchased by Bank of America and they already have a very nice world headquarters. So although our State University System produces a well educated worker, and our Community College system produces a skilled blue collor employee, they must find work somewhere where work exists.

That Hippy Pam, is not the fault of youth.

Homophobia at work?

If this was in a mall, I am guessing there is a Victoria Secret with just-as-revealing ads with women in them, no?

That’s the one thing I agree with you about, Aegrus. But then, women always wanted to have control over men anyway, uhh.......

#By Mike Frazier, February 4: “Robert… nudity itself is not intrinsically sexual. Courts have held this again and again. It doesn’t stop police from arresting people - in violation of the law and their rights - but it’s true nonetheless.......

Christian fundamentalists don’t know how to share the country with people who disagree with their belief system.... Second, many policemen are bullies, gorillas who live to push people around - especially people whom they believe can’t or won’t defend themselves…

If you create a job that gives the people who hold it power over the day-to-day lives of other people, who do you think is going to apply? People who love doing exactly that. Bullies will always be overrepresented in police forces; the nature of the job attracts them...”

Please understand that RG is “sensitive” like that, Mike Frazier. I guess he must be a sensitive new age guy, eh? Maybe even a policeman, uhh!?!? This isn’t conspiracy....

#By Joy F, February 4: “So, I guess it would be OK with you then, if your town banned women from displaying a very modest amount of cleavage? And the FBI “should be in the business” of telling me telling how many shirt buttons I can leave open...”

There is this strange problem with “clevage”, Joy F.. Maybe it is that women have it but men don’t? But the most obscene thing is really a chest of hair like a carpet - with more of the same on the back, uhh.

Then there are buttocks. They are a kind of “cleavage” too. Men might have them more pronounced than women - and that frightens them more than anything. Being looked at - and maybe even by other males, ha ha. So childish.....

Crack the Whip !

We need more of this type of action in regards to the immoral expressionism so prevalent in today’s America . I say crack down on the masses , before this decadence spins further out of control .
Look where we are headed . We have a colored man trying to become president . We have a woman trying to become president . We have wet backs all over the place . Enough is enough already . The next thing you know we will have a Jew running for president . Has anyone ever heard of healthy boundaries ?
Now about this A &F;advertising SCANDAL - why don’t we skin these models alive and teach them a good lesson - you can bet after being skinned alive , they will use better judgement in choosing future modeling jobs !!
So enough about that . How is Dennis Kucinich doing in the polls ? And what about Oprah saving one - one voter - how did that huge story turn out . And Scott Ritter on pulling out of Iraq - Where did that piece go ? Truthdig is nothing but an ultraleft tabloid - nothing more - a tabloid posing as meaningful(less) blog . Ann Coulter is meaningful ? Newsworthy?
Truthdig is just another diversion for Americans who only want to spout off and solve nothing .
That Commie Gabir guy is one of the worst ! Bad Gabir!!!

You have got to be kidding.
So America is the “land of the free”?
What a crock of shit.

As for community “standards”, they are the same arguments that supported slavery, wife beating, etc.

Absurd

Calling that photo obscene is ridiculous.  Young people see much worse on TV every day.  To cite a manager on obscenity charges for this-- that’s the true obscenity.  The people who reported this should be ashamed of their actions.  I guess they personally were just too turned on by the photo.

You have no idea what was in the ads? You’re looking at it.....its right there in the article! That’s the exact billboard which was removed.

So, I guess it would be OK with you then, if your town banned women from displaying a very modest amount of cleavage? And the FBI “should be in the business” of telling me telling how many shirt buttons I can leave open?!

Get real!

Stalwart

I’ve got to say that advertising from mortgage refinancing lenders are far more offensive than this ad, which is, by the way, just one of many. People who whine and complain about sex and violence, but stand still and emotionless over big business’s stranglehold on their actual lifestyle should be ashamed.

I’m not a hippie by any means, but anyone can see a time-tested societal fascination with beauty and the female form. It’s perfectly normal and healthy to admire youth, although I usually prefer a bit of salt. That’s a personal issue, though!

I think if there were more nudity in America, we’d all stop being so ridiculously sexist and homophobic. Of course, the bigoted feminists would hate that as much as, if not more than, the social conservative establishment.

The only thing obscene about Abercrombe & Fitch are their prices. We do have a two tiered society. One tier scrimps, saves and shops at WalWart for watered down versions of formerly fine products. (Hey, who doesn’t need a five gallon jar of pickles for their bomb shelter?) The other tier shops at places such as Abercrombe & Fitch for well made items at insane prices. (When did new clothes with holes and wear spots equate to hip fashion?) But it could be worse, at least we have a choice.

By doing what they did, Abercrombie, assisted by the police in Virginia Beach, get ad play they could never have imagined without this ploy.

An aside here, I used to buy my guns over-the-counter at the Abercrombie in Manhattan… sure has changed…

While I fully agree with most of what posters have said, I feel this type of “spread” (pardon the pun) will become more prevelant as advertisers see their ads on the internet (unpaid) as above.

Getting MORE for their dollar is what they do.

Re:

I don’t know about “ a red neck enclave” but this is nothing new for Va. Beach. I’ve previously lived there, and I plan on returning, and I can tell you that there is more of a military presence there than anything else. However, you have to remember that Va. Beach is where Pat Robertson’s television ministry is based and it carries a lot of supposed moral authority there. Va. Beach also has strict regulations regarding beach attire, activities on the beach, congregations on the boardwalk, and driving along the beachfront area.

Let's be honest

It the ad about the clothes or about the bodies. What does obscene mean? Look it up. It will say in one of the definitions “abhorrent to morality or virtue.” When people think its okay to force a minority opinion on others then that is a problem.  I don’t want to see a man buttocks or a woman’s breast when I am going to the beach to spend some time with the family. I guess I should just stay at home. Is that what I need to do? Or does someone else want to tell my children it is just a butt so no big deal. What about the obsession on the physical body? That is another topic that we could discuss for a long time. When we let things like this “slide” by then we’re opening the door for problems. This ad isn’t expression. Abercrombie and Fitch is pushing the limits too far.

Just more of the fascist agenda as it moves along…

BTW, I didn’t see any breasts. Not that much of a butt either.

Who CARES?!

Now, if this was a photo of Schwartzie the Terminator, it WOULD be obscene and grotesque. Otherwise, I truly don’t get what the big (or even small) deal is, aside from what I’ve already said..the fascist agenda moving right along, and folks being willing to put up with it.

Meantime, why isn’t it obscene to be spending money on ANYTHING from A & F?

Oh..that’s right..I think Levi Strauss has been outsourced…

Uhh, God, talk about sick moralizing!

(a) Every woman has breasts (unless they have been chopped off by a surgeon). In a culture which so admires them, why should anyone see them as “obscene”?  The natural female function is to feed their babies with milk from their breasts - why should this be seen as “obscene”?

(b) What buttocks? I didn’t see any buttocks! And, if so, so what? Aren’t they simply a part of the human anatomy at the rear where the legs join the trunk? What is obscene are the unwashed sleazy people who walk around with their underwear hanging out and their pants falling of as a matter of course.

Send them off to war, eh!?!? Let them have a few holes shot through them for the greater glory of their nation. Protecting your oil corporations’ interests by having your legs and your balls blown off or your guts hanging on the end of someone’s bayonet! Now, that ISN’T obscene..... support our fuckin’ troops in murdering slopes, gooks and hajis and ragheads!!!
