Oprah’s Very OWN Television NetworkPosted on Jan 15, 2008
It’s surprising this didn’t happen earlier: Multimedia mogul Oprah Winfrey is launching a television network, simply and logically called the Oprah Winfrey Network, in conjunction with Discovery Communications. Oprahphiles can look forward to a 2009 launching for OWN, which Winfrey calls “a natural extension of my show.”

By Denise, January 23 at 7:21 am # Live your best lifeThese comments against Oprah are scary and ignorant. You obviously don’t believe that her goal is to help people live their best life. But I see that she gives people, including me, access to all kinds of information to empower themselves if they so chose. Her friends on XM156, including Dr. Oz, Jean Chatsky, Bob Greene are all dedicated to this mission and provide so much good information and points of veiw on health, money, fitness, spirituality, organizing, etc etc etc on a daily basis it is a true blessing. No one else out there is providing this service. The networks may dumb down the people but I feel more knowledgable every day because of the opportunities to learn provided by Oprah and her mission.
By cyrena, January 23 at 1:28 am # Nope...she just helped a lotWell, I’d have to agree with you on this, that Oprah is certainly not ALONE in the dumbing down of American TV watchers. Nope, she didn’t start it at all. She only added to it, and managed to make a bundle, doing ALL that you’ve described…she’s been the TOP SALESPERSON for the corporate media in their advertising. Anything sellable, she’s sold it. And, it would appear that the commissions have been pretty damn good. So no, let’s not blame her for STARTING that, because she’s not that smart, and she’s damn sure not a ‘humanitarian’. So, she isn’t responsible for ‘starting’ this, only for kicking it in real good, so that any of the millions that have watched her over the decades, have developed priorities that are totally superficial, (including the religious stuff, since she’s sold that as well) and that has ‘assisted’ them in maintaining the stupidity that has made her so successful. So, we can at least be clear on that. If American’s hadn’t always been as stupid as you say, then Oprah would still be in Mississippi, cooking pies, or eatin’ hamburgers, and/or maybe doin’ somebody’s hair. Fortunately for her, Americans are so stupid, that she’s been able to get super rich off of them. So in THAT respect, she IS smart. Might not have been her idea to begin with, (since Con Artists have been around since the beginning of time), but she was sure smart enough to get in on the gravy train. How many other Madames can say the same, or have grown as rich as she has? So, my hat is off to her on that, but I’m also not one of those who’ve been fleeced, intellectually or economically. (at least not by Oprah). So, there we have it.

By Jeanine Molloff, January 21 at 1:35 pm # Why is Truthdig wasting timeWhy is Truthdig wasting time on this trivial occasion? While Rome is burning, Truthdig is giving more publicity to a rich celebrity who has failed to ‘speak truth to power.’ Since her legal brush with the stupid cowboys growing beef; she has withdrawn in little more than Jerry SpringerLand for the burbs. Has she denounced the illegal power grab by this administration? NO. Has she investigated the de facto dismantling of the Bill of Rights? NO. She does give away neat cars though. Jeanine Molloff
By cyrena, January 22 at 12:08 am # Re: Why is Truthdig wasting timeJeanine Molloff, My sentiments exactly. Thanks for expressing them so well. In short, she hasn’t done a damn thing, and I’d say that even if I’d been the recipient of one of those neat cars. (I haven’t been). Now, if this her very ‘own’ network, were some indication that she might actually begin to do what she NEVER has, (speak truth to power) there might be some interest in this. There is NO reason however, to believe that she will, since she has conscientiously AVOIDED doing anything of the such, for the two plus decades that she’s been around, determined to dumb down the population that tunes into her. (tuning into to Oprah is like tuning out on reality of any measure.) She’s proved herself to be a danger to society, and so what can we expect from ‘her very own’ network?
By DennisD, January 20 at 7:32 am # My own fish tankAnd people wonder why I replaced my televison with a fish tank. Thank you Oprah for affirming my choice once again.
By weather, January 20 at 5:09 am # Re: Ah Maani On THIS we have agreementCyrena, you give Ms. Winfrey far too much power. While Jerry Springer & the Hollywood crowd cheapened America, the ‘dumbing’ down started w/the high brows. When the Corporation for Public Broadcasting usurped the management of PBS/NPR the subtle and profound slide began. The dumbing down is systemic and achieves it’s goal because many of us thought the other guy was looking out for each other - this naive assumption at least on my part, is my angst, I thought ‘they’ were supposed to tuck me in at night? I would hold Joan Rivers, Cindy Adams, NASCAR, WalMart, NBA ‘bling’, NFL tailgate crowds, CEO’s just as much a contributing factor to this cheaping/dumbing down as I would Jim Leherer. Oprah’s book club is hardly a gesture of pedantics, but its not a dumbing down contributing factor either.
By Jumborino, January 21 at 4:09 am # Re: I believe Oprah is aSo, You like that Opie builds a school in Africa, and that gains media attention! When she, if she is really black should be helping the poor blacks in her own country. If she is, where is the media attention. She is a soap opera drama queen and don’t give a crap about anyone below her. She has you conned like your preacher.
By dave, January 16 at 8:40 pm # are you kidding??? why doare you kidding??? why do you people idolize Oprah? she is a talk show host, nothing more, nothing less. so she made it big, good for her. but that doesn’t make her any better, any more insightful, etheral, or intelligent than anyone else. what good has she done?? give away cars to her audiance? they were paid for by the company. she has done NOTHING people. she is so full of herself she has convinced herself that she is a queen and a cultural icon and mover and shaker. the only people who who buy into that are the one’s that work for her, who are dependent on their paycheck, and the mindless dolts out there that worship this blimp. get a life. better yet, watch Jerry Springer.
By Rowdy!, January 17 at 1:29 pm # Re: Re: are you kidding??? why doReally… who cares?!
By Sharon Ash, January 17 at 6:27 am # Re: are you kidding??? why doWell, Dave, it is obvious the light she tries to shine has escaped your little corner of the world. And, until it shines in, hate of Oprah and others will be your reality and you will only see the negative side. You are probably where you need to be at this time in your life learning the lessons you need to learn. Peace on your journey, as you move toward a higher level of conscious thinking.
By dave, January 17 at 4:53 pm # Re: Re: are you kidding??? why doplease spare me the new age tripe. nobody deserves the idolatry that you give this woman. why don’t you look to yourself for spiritual gratification. why don’t you look into yourself for guidance and fulfillment? what has she done? start a book club?? my god woman, go to the bookstore yourself and choose your own reading material! are you an adult or still in second grade? do you not know as a previous poster stated that she is renowned for being a brutal boss? who leaves out a decades long boyfriend from their will? and yes, I will wait until you finish your can spaghetti-o’s.
By Sharon Ash, January 16 at 9:19 am # I support Oprah...I wish only success for Oprah in all of her endeavors. She has spent much of her life in pursuing ways to help others physically, spiritually, emotionally, financially and raise the level of conscious thought in society. Many blessings and unlimited abundance are my wishes for her. Thank you Oprah, for the light you attempt to shine in the world.
