George Clooney Cuffed at Sudanese Embassy Protest

Can’t say the guy doesn’t have range. On Friday, George Clooney put his actor/director/good-time-guy persona aside to get serious about what he warned could become a catastrophe of global proportions, the crisis in Sudan, and he went so far as to get arrested in front of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C., to make his point.

Hollywood Democrats Wary of Super PACs

With less than eight months until Election Day, President Obama is getting trounced in the super PAC department—partly by design, as Obama only recently capitulated to this democratically challenged trend, but also because certain members of a particular class of Democratic donor aren’t too keen on giving money this way if it contributes to a larger problem.

Peter Gabriel to Rush Limbaugh: Don’t Use My Tunes

Next time Rush Limbaugh wants to play the bully, he might need to play something other than Peter Gabriel’s music for a soundtrack. The musician’s reps posted a statement on Gabriel’s Facebook page noting that he was “appalled” to hear that Limbaugh had spun the tune “Sledgehammer” while besmirching Sandra Fluke’s honor last week.

Obama’s Celebrity Corps Smaller, Less Enthusiastic This Season

Matt Damon has spoken of his disappointment with Barack Obama, his favorite candidate from 2008, and other famous Obama boosters from the last election cycle are also less willing to lend their names to the president’s cause this time around.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s ‘Dictator’ Act Not Welcome at the Oscars

This year, Sacha Baron Cohen can thank the Academy Awards for giving his latest politically flavored comedy, “The Dictator,” some excellent free publicity. Not that he didn’t engineer it himself.

Julian Assange a Part of ‘Simpsons’ Milestone

“The Simpsons” hasn’t been funny since Bill Clinton was president, but in its prime nothing was better. Now in season 23, the show just aired its 500th episode. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange guested, taping his lines from England.

Whither ‘Colbert Report’?

On Wednesday, Comedy Central announced that “The Colbert Report,” one of its most successful and perennially popular offerings, would be airing repeats that night and Thursday. Taping of the show on those two days was canceled. No big whoop, except the network didn’t offer much of an explanation for the show’s sudden hiatus. Updated

Herman Cain Will Not Dance With the Stars

The former GOP front-runner seemed to enjoy the spotlight, so it comes as some surprise that he rebuffed ABC when it offered to let him cha-cha among other B-list (and below) celebrities on “Dancing With the Stars.” Apparently he does not have moves like Jagger and/or Tom DeLay.

Giving Famous Nudes the Photoshop Treatment

So much for Rubenesque: An artist by the memorable name of Anna Utopia Giordano has reshaped the famous figures of several nudes from classical paintings—think Velazquez, Bouguereau and Botticelli—to give them a 21st-century sensibility. (Read: They’re a lot skinnier.)

Hollywood Republicans: Rare, but Still There

The Hollywood Republican is an uncommon breed, and many specimens apparently feel that their chosen professional habitat does not allow them to proliferate as freely as their less conservative counterparts. But sightings are more common during election season. (Above, Vince Vaughn, a supporter of Ron Paul.)

Whitney Houston and the Politics of Posthumous Pricing

Early on Sunday morning, somewhere around 4 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, the going price of “The Ultimate Collection,” a greatest-hits compilation by the newly departed musical icon Whitney Houston, jumped 60 percent on the U.K. version of Apple’s iTunes store. By Sunday night, the price had dropped, but by then The Guardian had also taken note.

And Now, This Presidential Appraisal From Scarlett Johansson

There may be untold millions of onetime Obama boosters whose feelings of hope have significantly diminished since, say, November 2008—and with good reason. But on Tuesday night, one of the president’s celebrity supporters, Scarlett Johansson, showed she’s still willing to stump for Obama at a gathering in New York that brought fashionistas and politicos together.

‘Lorax’ Banks on Green Marketing

Animated movies make a bundle on commercial tie-ins, but “The Lorax” presented something of a challenge for Universal. After all, you can’t have plastic replicas of Dr. Seuss’ champion of the environment piling up in a landfill somewhere. The studio found a way to cash in by greenwashing its licensing with help from the EPA and Whole Foods.
