The Fascinating Gen. Petraeus

So, one of the relentless Barbara Walters’ fave things to do around the holidays is to count down her list of the “10 Most Fascinating People” of the year. This time, mixed somewhat awkwardly in among the likes of Sandra Bullock, Justin Bieber and ...

Mencken, a Curmudgeon for the Ages

There can’t be many newspapermen whose work bears rereading after more than 80 years, but Mencken is one. The six volumes of his collected “Prejudices” are cocksure about everything, but whether they are right or boneheaded, one hardly cares.

Florida Finally Gets Over Morrison’s Jimmy

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has pardoned the late Doors frontman Jim Morrison on a conviction of showing his penis to a Miami concert audience in 1969. Morrison’s bandmates have long claimed that the singer may have been belligerent, drunk and obnoxious that night but kept his instrument in his pants.

Rolling Stone Finds ‘Lost’ Lennon Interview

Handily aligning with the unleashing of The Beatles’ music into the iTunes computerverse, as well as with the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death, Rolling Stone magazine has published heretofore unreleased portions of the slain Beatle’s final interview ... (continued)

Memoirs of an Odd One In

Garry Wills, the greatest political commentator of our time, belongs to no trendy circles unless the circle could extend backward in time to one of his most profound influences, G.K. Chesterton.

Steve Martin Too Artsy for This Venue

Apparently New Yorkers just don’t want to hear a banjo-playing comedian talk art. After an hour-long Q-and-A with brainy comedian Steve Martin, who was reportedly too high brow, the 92nd St. YMCA Y in New York felt compelled to offer its audience a refund. (Correction: Earlier, this item, in its headline and text, referred to the YMCA; actually, Martin appeared at a facility of the 92nd Street Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association.)

‘Degenerate Art’ Resurfaces in Berlin

An assortment of sculptures once derided by the Nazis as prime examples of “degenerate art”—complete with a Third Reich-sponsored show under that heading—has been partly recovered and reunited for a comeback exhibit at Berlin’s Neues Museum.

Beauty and the Brain

How’s this for a mental image? In an effort to make our synapses sexier to the general public, one enterprising neuroscience aficionado and Ph.D.-to-be cooked up a book of pretty pictures of the human brain as rendered from past to present.

Speak, Royalty

All going as imagined, it’s really no more than a minor embarrassment. Prince George (Colin Firth), second in line for the English throne, has a speech impediment, which renders it an agony for him to talk in public.

America the Material

Berman pulls no punches in laying bare the truths about who we are, not just as a nation, but also as individuals wrapped up in the destructive pursuit of material excess. In the unswerving style of his other writings, he rips apart the national illusion of greatness.

Bristol Palin Loses a Dance Competition

Forgive us this unabashed descent into mass culture, but our long national nightmare is over. Bristol Palin, despite some critics’ allegations of tea party favoritism, did not win on “Dancing With the Stars.” That honor (if it is one) goes to “Dirty Dancing” star Jennifer Grey, because nobody puts Baby in a corner.

Leo Ponies Up Big Bucks for Tigers

Having lived through a scary air travel incident last weekend, Leonardo DiCaprio is giving some big cats a shot at survival in the form of $1 million, which the actor donated Tuesday at the first-ever international tiger summit, in Moscow.

‘White Material’: Portrait of the Colonist in a Post-Colonial Land

The predominant image of this film—repeated in a dozen variants—is of a lone woman walking or driving the empty roads of this beautiful, unnamed country, seeking a salvation that is both practical and spiritual.

Beyond ‘1984’: New Frontiers of Mass Surveillance

Does the notion of remote-controlled soldiers—the fully human kind—seem only a sci-fi vision or the product of someone’s paranoid imagination? Guess again: There’s a project in the works as the military and big business join forces to make privacy a thing of the past.

Brooklyn Artist Tallies Troop Suicides

In this case, the writing is actually on the wall: Brooklyn-based artist Sebastian Errazuriz turned his shock over hearing that the number of U.S. troops who committed suicide in 2009 doubled the toll ... (continued)
